Book excerpt: When Abigail, Morton, Ruth and her dog go sledging one snowy day in their sleepy village, they wander off into the forest to find the cottage of the notorious recluse, Bentley. After an encounter with the unpleasant gamekeeper Vargis, they continue through a worsening blizzard to the cottage, where they are forced to take shelter.Bentley returns and the children are scared, but they soon grow to trust the elderly man, who tells them the story of Ivan and Gertrude Murdac, outcasts who lived at Blackdaw Cottage years earlier. Meanwhile, the children's parents wait for them, miles away, worried at the fate of their offspring in such horrendous conditions.Day turns to night, night turns to day, and everyone finds that the snow has changed some things forever....A novel for children aged from 12-16, Blackdaw Cottage will keep the reader hooked as they follow the story of the Murdacs and the fate of the three young children and a dog. “Blackdaw Cottage began life as a 1,000 word ghost story for a competition about twelve years ago. My computer broke down and I missed the entry deadline. University intervened and the story was put aside. It was revisited seven or eight years later. Other ideas for expanding the story had developed and I attached to the nucleus the adventures of three children. I wanted to resurrect characters, convey the traits of people I associated with in rural Yorkshire in my youth, whose presence remains vivid in my imagination still," says Philip Dent of his writing the book.

Book The Inferno

    Book Details:
  • Author : August Strindberg
  • Publisher : Good Press
  • Release : 2019-11-21
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 125 pages

Download or read book The Inferno written by August Strindberg and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Inferno" is an autobiographical novel by August Strindberg. Written in French in 1896–97 at the height of Strindberg's troubles with both censors and women, the book is concerned with Strindberg's life both in and after he lived in Paris, and explores his various obsessions, including alchemy, occultism, and Swedenborgianism. The narrator (ostensibly Strindberg, although his narrative variably coheres with and diverges from historical truth) spends most of the novel in Paris, isolated from his wife (Frida Uhl), children, and friends. He associates with a circle of Parisian artists and writers, but often fears they are ridiculing and persecuting him. In his isolation, Strindberg successfully attempts alchemical experiments that apparently violate the laws of chemistry, and has his work published in prominent journals. He fears, however, that his secrets will be stolen, and his persecution mania worsens, believing that his enemies are attacking him with 'infernal machines'...

Book excerpt: A gothic mystery. Paranormal investigator James d'Orr is more at home exposing fraudulent mediums in Edwardian London than racing across the windswept moors of the Yorkshire Dales. But when the young heiress of Arkengarth engages him to investigate a family curse that threatens her sanity and her life, he is plunged into a deadly adventure from which even his extraordinary abilities may not be able to save him. The first in a series of Jackdaw adventures. ***** "Great read with characters you want to meet again. Fast moving, gripping, great period setting, brilliant descriptions that keep you hooked. Couldn't put it down!" ***** "It's the ultimate page turner, a romping gothic mystery with twists and turns that will tear at your heart in places. But what struck me most is that this is Mr Manthorp's first novel. In fact, he's a masterful and genuinely original writer. I felt a similar excitement reading Gaiman's Neverwhere years ago."
