Book excerpt: “Science fiction at its best, a realistic tale of exploration and danger, written by a man who knows the details of deep-sea exploration firsthand.” —Ben Bova, Hugo Award-wining author With a crew of seven, the Challenger sea lab submerges three miles below the waves for a one-year mission to study the hidden world of the deep black sea. How is it that sea animals can live and reproduce in water that should boil them on the thermal vents known as “black smokers?” Superheated water that is full of toxins and heavy metals and contains almost no oxygen should be void of life on planet Earth—and yet it is teeming with it. The answer to the puzzle lies in the bacteria. Researcher Ted Bell is a NASA scientist with his own agenda: getting humans to Mars. When he purposefully infects a member of the crew in an attempt to harness the power of the Deinococcus radiodurans bacteria, he quickly loses control and unleashes a terrifying new creature. His botched experiment quickly becomes a battle for survival—three miles below the surface. With the research vessel nearing catastrophic failure, and terrifying alien life forms running wild through the ship, the crew must figure out a way to battle something that is no longer human while trying desperately to reach the surface alive. “Crichton at his best is the main author who comes to mind as a comparable influence when reading Deep Black Sea . . . The informative and fascinating science that fills each page really elevates this book to a higher grade.” —Horror Novel Reviews

  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Black Sea Monster written by Bruce Smith and published by The Willard Group. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during the height of the Cold War, Black Sea Monster is a classic espionage thriller. A Soviet plot to steal Harrier jets is intercepted by East German merchant seaman Karl Bauer. Foiling the Soviet plan may buy Bauer a ticket to the West, but his plans are complicated when he rescues and falls in love with the beautiful and headstrong daughter of a powerful captain in the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. Author Bruce M. Smith, a former commercial airline pilot and recreational sailor, has used his broad experience to create a novel that is as technically sound as it is lively, well-plotted and gripping. There's little more satisfying than a good story, well told, and with Black Sea Monster, Bruce Smith has hit the bulls-eye squarely. Advance Praise: Robert Gandt, bestselling author of "With Hostile Intent," says: "Black Sea Monster is a big, rambling Cold War action tale. There's something here for everyone - military adventure, a problematic romance, and a believable hero caught in a collision of global forces."

  • Author : Chloe Aridjis
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2020-02-18
  • ISBN : 1948226774
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Sea Monsters written by Chloe Aridjis and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, this intoxicating story of a teenage girl who trades her a middle–class upbringing for a quest for meaning in 1980s Mexico is “a surreal, captivating tale about the power of a youthful imagination, the lure of teenage transgression, and its inevitable disappointments” (Los Angeles Review of Books). One autumn afternoon in Mexico City, seventeen–year–old Luisa does not return home from school. Instead, she boards a bus to the Pacific coast with Tomás, a boy she barely knows. He seems to represent everything her life is lacking―recklessness, impulse, independence. Tomás may also help Luisa fulfill an unusual obsession: she wants to track down a traveling troupe of Ukrainian dwarfs. According to newspaper reports, the dwarfs recently escaped a Soviet circus touring Mexico. The imagined fates of these performers fill Luisa’s surreal dreams as she settles in a beach community in Oaxaca. Surrounded by hippies, nudists, beachcombers, and eccentric storytellers, Luisa searches for someone, anyone, who will “promise, no matter what, to remain a mystery.” It is a quest more easily envisioned than accomplished. As she wanders the shoreline and visits the local bar, Luisa begins to disappear dangerously into the lives of strangers on Zipolite, the “Beach of the Dead.” Meanwhile, her father has set out to find his missing daughter. A mesmeric portrait of transgression and disenchantment unfolds. Set to a pulsing soundtrack of Joy Division, Nick Cave, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sea Monsters is a brilliantly playful and supple novel about the moments and mysteries that shape us. "Aridjis is deft at conjuring the teenage swooniness that apprehends meaning below every surface. Like Sebald’s or Cusk’s, her haunted writing patrols its own omissions . . . The figure of the shipwreck looms large for Aridjis. It becomes a useful lens through which to see this book, which is self–contained, inscrutable, and weirdly captivating, like a salvaged object that wants to return to the sea." ―Katy Waldman, The New Yorker

Book Monsters of the Sea

Download or read book Monsters of the Sea written by Richard Ellis and published by Globe Pequot. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few creatures have captured the imaginations of so many for so long as have monsters of the deep. Their history has been surprisingly consistent, the author notes. Most began as myths and then acquired a sense of reality when the existence of creatures resembling those chronicled in legend was documented. Ellis (Men and Whales) gives a superb account of marine monsters and their attendant myths, sightings, scientific discovery and biology. He describes only the best known and the best documented. He traces the mermaid to the manatee and dugong, Leviathan to the sperm whale, kraken to the giant squid and polyp to the octopus (sharks, however, remain sharks). He examines these monsters in art, literature and film, taking Jules Verne and Victor Hugo to task for their ignorance of biology, hysterical fantasy and unmitigated malice. Herman Melville, Arthur C. Clarke and Peter Benchley get better ratings. Of all the sighted monsters, only the giant squid (Architeuthis) retains its mythological and cryptozoological status, for its very existence is shrouded in mystery. Sharks have had a bad reputation throughout history, but until Jaws (1974) they did not figure prominently in literature. At the end of this engaging book, Ellis confesses to skepticism: "monsters, if they exist, have more to fear from us than we do from them.

Early in August 1937, a news flash came: a sea monster had been spotted lurking off the shore of Nantucket Island. Historically, the Massachusetts island had served as port for whaling ships. Eyewitnesses swore this wasn’t a whale, but some new, fearsome creature. As eyewitness account piled up, newspaper stories of the sea monster spread quickly. Across the nation, people shivered in fear. Then, footprints were found on a Nantucket beach. Photographs were sent to prominent biologists for their opinion. Discussion swirled about raising a hunting party. On August 18, news spread across the island: the sea monster had been captured. Islanders ran to the beach and couldn’t believe their eyes. This nonfiction picture book is a perfect tool to discuss non-political fake news stories. Back matter discusses the freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Book Having Survived Sevastopol

Download or read book Having Survived Sevastopol written by Gennadiy Albul and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is not meant to be a documentary story of WWII in Sevastopol. It is written from perspectives of real people's memories. The names of the major characters, Polly, Mary, Lucy, and Nikolay are real. Other names are sometimes alias and represent integrated characters, but most of the events are written almost word for word as it was spoken. It is absolutely amazing, as in the life of people, and by people lives the absolutely improbable chain of events that are rigidly connected with each other conduced to a certain mysterious purpose. This written history, in particular, narrates about itself, about the sequence of the events, which has led to its writing. Polly, whose husband had been killed in Russian revolutionary events, tried to escape and find a safe place to live with her children. She escaped from her past, but is it possible to escape from the future? She found shelter in Sevastopol, which was, is, and will be a vortex for dramatic, historical events involving most powerful persons of the planet. WWII started unexpectedly for both Polly and her daughter Mary on the same day it began for the Soviet Union. They went through the war from the beginning to the very end, witnessing stupidity, treachery, and the senselessness of bureaucrats of war from both the German and Russian side. They lived daily with the cruelty and horror of war. One thing they could not understand that God had been told to Polly in her prayers that they would survive to narrate the story of God's will realizing miraculously. God did not give them a second of respite. They participated in all of the events of the many month defense of Sevastopol, through all of the killing and capturing of the defenders. They had to work for the aggressors in order to survive. They appeared in the mid-battle in a time of the Soviet army return and came to see the Germans as just simple people, who did not want to fight, just wanted to survive the horrible situation that they could not control. Eventually, Mary became a manager of the German prisoners of war, who were working on the restoration of Sevastopol just as Germans forced them to work clearing ruins after the capturing of the city. History had repeated itself in the completely opposite way. Would it be so simple? It appeared to be just the next stage in history about Having Survived Sevastopol.
