Book First Confession

Download or read book First Confession written by Chris Patten and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chris Patten was a cradle Catholic (hence First Confession), became on the most prominent Tory 'Wets' of the 1980s and 1990s, and went on to hold a series of prominent public offices - Chairman of the Conservative Party, the last Governor of Hong Kong, European Commissioner for External Affairs, Chancellor of Oxford University, Chairman of the BBC, advisor to the Pope - as he self-deprecatingly puts it 'a Grand Poo-bah, the Lord High Everything Else'. He writes with wry humour about his time in all these offices, taking us behind the scenes and showing us unexpected sides of many of the great figures of the day. No political writer is so purely enjoyable as Chris Patten.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Modern Ireland

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Modern Ireland written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does religion mean to modern Ireland and what is its recent social and political history? The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Modern Ireland provides in-depth analysis of the relationships between religion, society, politics, and everyday life on the island of Ireland from 1800 to the twenty-first century. Taking a chronological and all-island approach, it explores the complex and changing role of religion both before and after partition. The handbook's thirty-two chapters address long-standing historical and political debates about religion, identity, and politics, including religion's contributions to division and violence. They also offer perspectives on how religion interacts with education, the media, law, gender and sexuality, science, literature, and memory. Whilst providing insight into how everyday religious practices have intersected with the institutional structures of Catholicism and Protestantism, the book also examines the island's increasing religious diversity, including the rise of those with 'no religion'. Written by leading scholars in the field and emerging researchers with new perspectives, this is an authoritative and up-to-date volume that offers a wide-ranging and comprehensive survey of the enduring significance of religion on the island.

Book excerpt: The Belly of Paris (Le Ventre de Paris) is the third novel in Émile Zola's twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart, first published in 1873. It is a novel of the teeming life which surrounds the great central markets of Paris. The book was originally translated into English by Henry Vizetelly and published in 1888 under the title Fat and Thin. After Vizetelly's imprisonment for obscene libel the novel was one of those revised and expurgated by his son, Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. The heroine is Lisa Quenu, a daughter of Antoine Macquart. She has become prosperous, and with prosperity her selfishness has increased. Her brother-in-law Florent had escaped from penal servitude in Cayenne and lived for a short time in her house, but she became tired of his presence and ultimately denounced him to the police. Émile Zola (1840 – 1902) was a French writer, the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France.

  • Author : Jeri Quinzio
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books

Download or read book Pudding written by Jeri Quinzio and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pudding usually brings to mind flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and tapioca, but prepackaged pudding cups don’t even scratch the surface of global pudding varieties—the term can denote dishes containing candied fruits and nuts or even frugal blends of little more than flour and suet. Pudding: A Global History explains how puddings developed from their early savory, sausage-like mixtures into the sweet and sticky confections we are now familiar with, and he describes how advances in kitchen equipment have changed puddings over time. Tackling blood, bread, rice, batter, and vegetable puddings, Jeri Quinzio describes the diverse ways cooks around the world make their puddings and how versions from different countries vary—England’s rice pudding, for instance, is flavored with vanilla, nutmeg, or cinnamon, whereas in India it is made with nuts or raisins. In addition to investigating the history of puddings on the dining table, Quinzio also looks at the prominent place puddings have had in novels, poems, songs, and cartoons. He shows how authors and artists like Anthony Trollope, Robert Burns, and George Cruikshank have used puddings to illustrate their characters’ sorrows, joys, and even political leanings. Bursting with choice morsels about puddings past and present, this is a book for fans of blood pudding and plum pudding alike.

Book Cathal O Byrne and the Northern Revival in Ireland 1890 1960

Download or read book Cathal O Byrne and the Northern Revival in Ireland 1890 1960 written by Richard Kirkland and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Richard Kirkland explores the history of Northern Ireland through the biography of one of its most unusual and talented personages—the legendary musician, IRA activist, poet, and Catholic mystic, Cathal O’Byrne. O’Byrne’s fascinating life, as Kirkland shows, is part and parcel of the extraordinary story of this fractured island. Both gay and Catholic in Protestant-dominated Northern Ireland, O’Byrne’s circle of friends included Roger Casement, Maud Gonne, and Patrick Pearse. Despite his outsider status, O’Byrne’s work was indicative of major shifts in public opinion, as O’Byrne moved from Home Rule politics to an eventual commitment to arms during the Irish War of Independence. Kirkland uses the story of O’Byrne’s life to delve into that of his colleagues during the Northern Irish cultural revival, making illuminating connections among the Ulster Literary Theatre, Belfast’s music hall culture, the Casement trial ,and the devastating Belfast pogroms of 1920 and 1921. Just as important, Kirkland brings to light the hidden history of gay Belfast and the fate of Northern Ireland’s Catholics in this previously neglected period after Partition but before the Troubles.
