This book is a labor of love-a love of Marquette and the love of the students who proudly attended the university. "Black Marquette" is about MARQUETTE PRIDE. The pride of all African American alumni of Marquette University who have passed through the doors of Marquette Hall in search of an education; walking the campus blocks of Wisconsin Avenue and Wells Street seeking to find out who they are and who they strive to be. For many of the Black alumni, their successes have gone unnoticed and overlooked. Their accomplishments, often hidden in the shadows, can now be celebrated in the light by all Marquette alumni. It was a struggle for some Black alumni to complete their essays. A few of those participating described it as "peeling off a band-aid" to reveal some of the memories. There were tears shed. But those tears washed away the negative only to reveal tears of joy. Joy for the lifelong friendships they made; fond memories of activities they participated in that helped them make it through those college years; appreciation for the Jesuit education they received and for the professors and administrators who made a positive difference in their lives. Though the book highlights the lives, struggles and successes of Black students over the years, it is a reminder to all students that you can overcome any obstacles and achieve success.

Despite the shift in the center of gravity of Christianity to the global South, intra-ecclesial tensions globally remain those of the relationship of culture to religion. The questions posed revolve around to what extent Western Christianity should be adapted to local cultures. Should we talk of Christianity in non-Western contexts or of majority world Christianity? Is it appropriate to describe the shift as the emergence of global Christianity or world Christianity? Should Christianity in the global South mimic Christianity in the global North, or can it be different in the light of the diversity of these cultures? Can Africans, Asians, Latin Americans, Europeans and North Americans – the entire global community – speak of God in the same way? This book is devoted to examining varieties of the intercultural process in world Christianity. It understands culture broadly as a common meaning upon which communities’ social order is organized. Culture in this sense is the whole life of people. It is the integrator of the filial bond holding people together and the various institutional structures – economic, technological, political and legal – that guarantee peace and survival in societies, states, and nations, both locally and internationally. Chapters compare the diversity of African American fatherhood with negative portrayals in politics, academia, and literature and, through qualitative analysis and original profiles, illustrate the struggle and intent of many black fathers to be responsible caregivers. Rhetorical Crossover uses the same concept to theorize how the black rhetorical presence has moved in mainstream spaces in an era where African Americans were becoming more visible in white culture. Cedric Burrows argues that when black rhetoric moves into the dominant culture, white audiences appear welcoming to African Americans as long as they present an acceptable form of blackness for white tastes. The predominant culture has always constructed coded narratives on how the black rhetorical presence should appear and behave when in majority spaces. In response, African Americans developed their own narratives that revise and reinvent mainstream narratives while also reaffirming their humanity.
