Book excerpt: Black Magic - A Tale of the Rise and Fall of the Antichrist by Marjorie Bowen Black magic has traditionally referred to the use of supernatural powers or magic for evil and selfish purposes. With respect to the left-hand path and right-hand path dichotomy, black magic is the malicious counterpart of benevolent white magic. In modern times, some find that the definition of "black magic" has been convoluted by people who define magic or ritualistic practices that they disapprove of as "black magic." Book excerpt: Black Magic begins with this ominous first line: 'In the large room of a house in a certain quiet city in Flanders, a man was guilding a devil'. That person is Dirk Renswoude, a craftsman and loner of noble birth who has been mistreated in some unspecified way by his family. He meets Thierry, a young scholar on his way to study at the university at Basle and they soon discover that they have a shared fascination with the black arts. However, Thierry is initially cautious and afraid of blasphemy, whilst Dirk is ambitious to be ""as great as the Master we serve can make his followers"" and thirst for power. Dirk leads them on to experiments with mystic circles drawn on the floor in chalk, the chanting of arcane incantations and the evocation of grotesque, demonic visions writhing in the speculum. Thierry still wavers, but when their experiments lead to murder the die is cast for both of them. One of the best gothic novels ever written!

This book was released on 2016-07-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the large room of a house in a certain quiet city in Flanders, a man was gilding a devil. The chamber looked on to the quadrangle round which the house was built; and the sun, just overhead, blazed on the vine leaves clinging to the brick and sent a reflected glow into the sombre spaces of the room. The devil, rudely cut out of wood, rested by his three tails and his curled-back horns against the wall, and the man sat before him on a low stool. On the table in front of the open window stood a row of knights in fantastic armour, roughly modelled in clay; beside them was a pile of vellum sheets covered with drawings in brown and green. By the door a figure of St. Michael leant against a chair, and round his feet were painted glasses of every colour and form."

Book Literary Ghosts from the Victorians to Modernism

Download or read book Literary Ghosts from the Victorians to Modernism written by Luke Thurston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book resituates the ghost story as a matter of literary hospitality and as part of a vital prehistory of modernism, seeing it not as a quaint neo-gothic ornament, but as a powerful literary response to the technological and psychological disturbances that marked the end of the Victorian era. Linking little-studied authors like M. R. James and May Sinclair to such canonical figures as Dickens, Henry James, Woolf, and Joyce, Thurston argues that the literary ghost should be seen as no mere relic of gothic style but as a portal of discovery, an opening onto the central modernist problem of how to write 'life itself.' Ghost stories are split between an ironic, often parodic reference to Gothic style and an evocation of 'life itself, ' an implicit repudiation of all literary style. Reading the ghost story as both a guest and a host story, this book traces the ghost as a disruptive figure in the 'hospitable' space of narrative from Maturin, Poe and Dickens to the fin de siècle, and then on into the twentieth century.

This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic gothic horror stories from the literary mistresses of the past! Many of gothic horror’s spookiest tales have come from the pens of women. Yet a substantial number of these women were overshadowed by their male contemporaries, especially with regard to the classics. Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories) redresses this imbalance by bringing together a selection of gothic stories from the past written exclusively by women. Carefully edited and compiled by author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, Ladies of Gothic Horror offers readers plenty of good old-fashioned chills and thrills. Whether you’re a devotee of the genre, a literature lover, an academic or a student, this volume of short fiction is sure to please. The biographies accompanying each story will show that these women were anything but typical for their time. Includes seventeen stories from authors Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, Edith Wharton, Marjorie Bowen, Gertrude Atherton, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elia W. Peattie and many more. "Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories) is a must-read for anyone who loves the horror, mystery, science fiction, or paranormal genres." - Long and Short Reviews "An inspiring collection, to be enjoyed in its own right, preferably by candlelight while sat in your favourite chair…" - ScreamFix "You’ll find some damn fine fiction in this collection and some equally impressive true stories." - Get On My Damn Level book reviews "We have stories with ghosts, some malevolent, some seeking vengeance, and some simply waiting for a wrong to be corrected…. [Including] a thoughtful look into the time period, and the challenges that these women had faced in getting published, let alone in living their everyday lives." - Girl Who Reads
