Book Black Hole Winds at All Scales IAU S378

Download or read book Black Hole Winds at All Scales IAU S378 written by Gabriele Bruni and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 378 covers one of the main astrophysical topics about black holes: the production of outflows, propagating at different scales. In the past decade, evidence has been mounting about the role of outflows in the evolution of the surrounding environment, in particular their so-called "feedback" effect on the star-forming capabilities of the galaxy hosting the black hole. This broad topic brought together observers of many different wavebands, with a multitude of observational aspects being presented, including latest results from JWST, GRAVITY, Hubble, ALMA, and VLBA. Sessions were also dedicated to theoretical aspects of black hole outflows, discussing a variety of simulations for magnetic and thermally driven winds, cases from extreme mass accretion rates to advection dominated flows, and topics of radiative driving and radiative transfer. These proceedings provide a picture of the field's status, highlighting currently debated topics, and suggesting possible new routes for the future developments.

Download or read book Physics of Black Holes written by I. Novikov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting predictions of Einstein's theory of gravitationisthat there may exist 'black holes': putative objects whose gravitational fields are so strong that no physical bodies and signals can break free of their pull and escape. Even though a completely reliable discovery of a black hole has not yet been made, several objects among those scrutinized by astrophysicists will very likely be conformed as black holes. The proof that they do exist, and an analysis of their properties, would have a significance going far beyond astrophysics. Indeed, what is involved is not just the discovery of yet another, even if extremely remarkable, astrophysical object, but a test of the correctness of our understanding the properties of space and time in extremely strong gravitational fields. Theoretical research into the properties of black holes and into the possible corollaries of the hypothesis that they exist, has been carried out with special vigor since the beginning of the 1970s. In addition to those specific features of black holes that are important for the interpretation of their possible astrophysical manifestations, the theory has revealed a nurober of unexpected characteristics of physical interactions involving black holes. By now, a fairly detailed understanding has been achieved of the properties of the black holes, their possible astrophysical manifestations, and the specifics of the various physical processes involved. Furthermore, profound links were found between black-hole theory and such seemingly very distant fields as thermodynamics, information theory, and quantum theory.

Book White Dwarfs as Probes of Fundamental Physics IAU S357

Download or read book White Dwarfs as Probes of Fundamental Physics IAU S357 written by Martin A. Barstow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White dwarfs are the most numerous members of the stellar graveyard. More than ninety percent of all stars will end their lives as white dwarfs. Research on these objects is fascinating in its own right, requiring developments in atomic data and the study of properties of matter under extreme conditions. However, these studies also have enormous impact on other areas of astrophysics, including: cosmology, the composition of extrasolar planets and fundamental physics. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 357 bring together experts from different branches of science working on white dwarfs, but also astronomers with expertise in a wide range of relevant disciplines. The resulting papers are organized around several key themes: SN Ia progenitors, debris from extrasolar planetary systems, fundamental physics, precision studies of white dwarf structure and stellar physics and Galactic evolution. They provide a framework for guiding the direction of white dwarf research for the next decade.

This volume gives an overview of the current status in the field of active galaxies including: AGN multiwavelength observations; different AGN types and their properties; AGN variability; active supermassive black holes and properties of galaxies in which they reside; triggering, feedback and shutting off AGN activity; relativistic jets and environments of active galaxies; and AGN evolution. IAU S356 was the third IAU symposium organised in Africa in the past 100 years since the IAU was established, and the first one organised in Ethiopia, highlighting current developments in astronomical research in Africa.

Book Solar and Stellar Magnetic Fields IAU S354

Download or read book Solar and Stellar Magnetic Fields IAU S354 written by Alexander G. Kosovichev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent observational results from space- and ground-based telescopes have demonstrated that a unified approach to the relationships between solar and stellar magnetism is necessary to advance our understanding of magnetic fields. The Proceedings of IAU Symposium 354 present recent results and discussions of emerging topics, including: magnetic field diagnostics using high-resolution observation; initial data from ALMA, Chinese Radio Spectroheliograph and other instruments; the detection of stellar magnetospheres; and the detailed mapping of magnetic fields on the surface of stars using new unique instrumentation. These observations stimulate comparisons of solar and stellar results, and improve our understanding of how surface magnetic structures and their evolution are related to the generation of magnetic fields by dynamos in solar and stellar interiors. This volume benefits graduate students and researchers interested in the recent advances and key problems of solar and stellar magnetic fields, and their impacts on planetary atmospheres.

Download or read book Perseus in Sicily IAU S342 written by Keiichi Asada and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perseus is an outstanding case in which to study the physics of relativistic plasma and thermal gas, and the interplay between galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. Ground and space observatories have recently provided some ground-breaking insights into the Perseus system, from a detailed image of a jet launched in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole, through VLBI, to an unexpected degree of turbulence in the cluster core, constrained by high energy resolution in x-rays. While preparing for the next generation observatories that will allow readers to address these questions in other systems, this volume provides some first steps in exploring topics relating to particle acceleration, energy transport between large and small scales and the role of magnetic fields in the launch of relativistic jets. Chapters deal with the latest results covering theory, observations, and numerical simulations, spanning a wide range in physical scales and energy ranges.

Book Uncovering Early Galaxy Evolution in the ALMA and JWST Era IAU S352

Download or read book Uncovering Early Galaxy Evolution in the ALMA and JWST Era IAU S352 written by Elisabete da Cunha and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three billion years of cosmic time were the prime epoch of galaxy formation. Characterising galaxies at this epoch is therefore crucial to achieving a major goal of modern astrophysics: to understand how galaxies such as our Milky Way emerged from the primordial density fluctuations in the early Universe and how they evolved through cosmic time. Recent major international investments in observing facilities such as the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) promise to provide the next leap in our understanding of this topic. This volume gathers the scientific contributions to the International Astronomical Union Symposium 352, which was devoted to this topic. The community of theoretical and observational experts discuss how we can make the most of ALMA and JWST synergies in advancing our understanding of galaxy evolution in the young Universe.
