The book considers the figure of the foreign woman, her exile, fratricide, and infanticide, in its ancient Greek form and in global, postcolonial receptions in a range of media, including drama, film, novels, and the visual arts. The chapters illuminate the contradictions of considering the classical Medea as a central reference point for analysis of other female figures from peripheral territories, while simultaneously acknowledging the insights that such comparisons can yield. Emphasizing the ways in which Medea’s seditious nature enables the establishment of an extensive and heterogeneous intertextual network with other mythic characters who represent a similarly disruptive role in their specific local historical and cultural contexts, the book argues for a comparative analysis that is equally attentive to myths and folk tales from all regions. These essays – by scholars of classics, comparative and world literatures, and postcolonial studies – represent a plurality of perspectives from different academic contexts in Africa, Latin America, North America, and Europe and examine how different cultures have depicted women, foreigners, crime, and abjection. The foundations of Greek myth and subsequently of the classical tradition itself are interrogated from a postcolonial perspective. In tracing the portrayals of Medea and other mythic women through the overlapping features of different female characters and plots, and intertwining local cultural and literary materials with broader debates, this volume challenges Eurocentric narratives of power and cultural domination, and works to decentralize the discussion of Medea from the exclusive domain of classical studies. The population of the camp is a mixture of ethnic groups all seeking opportunity in a new country. A number of interesting characters reside in the camp. Camp families encounter a number of trials and tribulations during WWII. Not the least was fear for the safety and survival of sons serving in the military. Salvatore Caminata, a formerly revered detective in Italy, conducted a careless investigation in his last case that led to a hasty conviction of an innocent person who later was brutally murdered while imprisoned. Caminata chooses to escape disgrace by immigrating to the United States. He finds employment in the county sheriff department that serves the coal camp. The mysterious murders of members of a Mexican-American family brings finger-pointing to a number of camp residents, but one person in particular stands out as the likely murderer. As the investigation of the murders twists and turns, Salvatore never forgets the lesson he learned in Italy.

The woman in question was Rosa Magnet Hoots, a member of the Oklahoma Osage Nation. The horse, draped in the iconic red roses signifying his victory in the fiftieth running of the Kentucky Derby, was Black Gold. In a sport defined by its exclusivity, the pair's unlikely appearance in the winner's circle set off a firestorm of speculation that would uncover an origin story stranger than fiction. Named for the oil that had been discovered in large quantities in Oklahoma at the time of his birth, Black Gold was born in 1921 to a mare named Useeit.
