  • Author : Georgina Lawton
  • Publisher : Hardie Grant Publishing
  • Release : 2021-05-05
  • ISBN : 1743587732
  • Pages : 126 pages

Download or read book Black Girls Take World written by Georgina Lawton and published by Hardie Grant Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Girls Take World is the global travel bible for adventurous explorers and travel newbies looking to engage with the concept of solo travel. Packed full of inspiring essays, advice on budgeting, eating alone, reducing carbon footprints and dealing with passport privilege and discrimination, as well as Q&A's with travel leaders such as Jessica Nabongo (the first black woman to travel to every country in the world), Annette Richmond (founder of Fat Girls Traveling), Rhiane Fatinikun (founder of Black Girls Hike), and Sasha Sarago (editor and founder of Ascension, Australia’s first Indigenous and ethnic women’s lifestyle magazine), this book is for the conscientious and the curious. Black women understand innately what it means to feel restricted, watched, unwanted. And historically, black female explorers have been overlooked by the travel industry. But social media has spawned a generation of story-tellers and change-makers determined to rewrite their own travel narratives and forcing brands to pay attention - there's never been a better time to situate yourself within the solo travel space! To travel while black and female is therefore to upend, and overcome, legacies of mobility impairment. It is to dispel myths and rewrite history. Black Girls Take World will inspire you to travel alone, help you engage with the world, and aid understanding of your particular experiences abroad. "We travel for ourselves, first and foremost, but attached to our journeys is the potential to rebuke stereotypes, to break moulds, to trace roots, foster inclusivity and give back."

Book Driving While Black African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights

Download or read book Driving While Black African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights written by Gretchen Sorin and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloomberg • Best Nonfiction Books of 2020: "[A] tour de force." The basis of a major PBS documentary by Ric Burns, this “excellent history” (The New Yorker) reveals how the automobile fundamentally changed African American life. Driving While Black demonstrates that the car—the ultimate symbol of independence and possibility—has always held particular importance for African Americans, allowing black families to evade the dangers presented by an entrenched racist society and to enjoy, in some measure, the freedom of the open road. Melding new archival research with her family’s story, Gretchen Sorin recovers a lost history, demonstrating how, when combined with black travel guides—including the famous Green Book—the automobile encouraged a new way of resisting oppression.

Book Tourism Global Crises and Justice

Download or read book Tourism Global Crises and Justice written by Raymond Rastegar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-27 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers theoretical and empirical studies exploring the link between global crises, sustainable tourism and the justice challenges being faced by vulnerable groups, individuals, and society. While any crisis may exacerbate existing inequalities, the crises of the 21st century are compounding and complicating the ways the impacts unfold and engulf individuals, communities and indeed, the global community. Recent crises revealed how dependent our economies and societies are on the tourism and hospitality industries. While studies of crises in tourism have proliferated, with concerns for risk management, recovery and resilience, COVID-19 has exposed the need to think more profoundly on this topic. In such circumstances, therefore, tourism actors must respond to the sustainability and justice challenges resulting from current and future crises by rethinking, redefining and reorienting tourism. The chapters in this edited volume present a discussion of pertinent themes that consider just transformations, issues of climate justice, diverse worldviews and knowledges, possibilities for solidarity through tourism, and concerns with power and decolonisation. This book will be of great interest to upper-level students, researchers, and academic of tourism, development studies and sustainability, as well as professionals in the field of tourism management. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Book Stony the Road

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 052555954X
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Stony the Road written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Stony the Road presents a bracing alternative to Trump-era white nationalism. . . . In our current politics we recognize African-American history—the spot under our country’s rug where the terrorism and injustices of white supremacy are habitually swept. Stony the Road lifts the rug." —Nell Irvin Painter, New York Times Book Review A profound new rendering of the struggle by African-Americans for equality after the Civil War and the violent counter-revolution that resubjugated them, by the bestselling author of The Black Church. The abolition of slavery in the aftermath of the Civil War is a familiar story, as is the civil rights revolution that transformed the nation after World War II. But the century in between remains a mystery: if emancipation sparked "a new birth of freedom" in Lincoln's America, why was it necessary to march in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s America? In this new book, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of our leading chroniclers of the African-American experience, seeks to answer that question in a history that moves from the Reconstruction Era to the "nadir" of the African-American experience under Jim Crow, through to World War I and the Harlem Renaissance. Through his close reading of the visual culture of this tragic era, Gates reveals the many faces of Jim Crow and how, together, they reinforced a stark color line between white and black Americans. Bringing a lifetime of wisdom to bear as a scholar, filmmaker, and public intellectual, Gates uncovers the roots of structural racism in our own time, while showing how African Americans after slavery combatted it by articulating a vision of a "New Negro" to force the nation to recognize their humanity and unique contributions to America as it hurtled toward the modern age. The story Gates tells begins with great hope, with the Emancipation Proclamation, Union victory, and the liberation of nearly 4 million enslaved African-Americans. Until 1877, the federal government, goaded by the activism of Frederick Douglass and many others, tried at various turns to sustain their new rights. But the terror unleashed by white paramilitary groups in the former Confederacy, combined with deteriorating economic conditions and a loss of Northern will, restored "home rule" to the South. The retreat from Reconstruction was followed by one of the most violent periods in our history, with thousands of black people murdered or lynched and many more afflicted by the degrading impositions of Jim Crow segregation. An essential tour through one of America's fundamental historical tragedies, Stony the Road is also a story of heroic resistance, as figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells fought to create a counter-narrative, and culture, inside the lion's mouth. As sobering as this tale is, it also has within it the inspiration that comes with encountering the hopes our ancestors advanced against the longest odds.
