Download or read book The Unteachables written by Keith A. Mayes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How special education used disability labels to marginalize Black students in public schools The Unteachables examines the overrepresentation of Black students in special education over the course of the twentieth century. As African American children integrated predominantly white schools, many were disproportionately labeled educable mentally retarded (EMR), learning disabled (LD), and emotionally behavioral disordered (EBD). Keith A. Mayes charts the evolution of disability categories and how these labels kept Black learners segregated in American classrooms. The civil rights and the educational disability rights movements, Mayes shows, have both collaborated and worked at cross-purposes since the beginning of school desegregation. Disability rights advocates built upon the opportunity provided by the civil rights movement to make claims about student invisibility at the level of intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Although special education ostensibly included children from all racial groups, educational disability rights advocates focused on the needs of white disabled students, while school systems used disability discourses to malign and marginalize Black students. From the 1940s to the present, social science researchers, policymakers, school administrators, and teachers have each contributed to the overrepresentation of Black students in special education. Excavating the deep-seated racism embedded in both the public school system and public policy, The Unteachables explores the discriminatory labeling of Black students, and how it indelibly contributed to special education disproportionality, to student discipline and push-out practices, and to the school-to-prison pipeline effect.

Janelle and Outlaw's love story was birthed through struggles that neither one of them ever saw coming but just when they thought they’d reached their happily ever after, their picture-perfect love story comes crumbling down. Janelle's dreams are all set to come true when she gets the chance to become the District Attorney of New York City. The only thing making her have second thoughts is the fact that she’s married to the city’s ultimate bad boy, Luke ‘Outlaw’ Murray. With no one around who understands her ambitious goals, she finds a friend in a woman who truly only wants to bring her down. The saying ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’ always rings true but once Janelle finally realizes that her enemy is right in front of her, will it be too late? Luke ‘Outlaw’ Murray is the bad boy who no one ever imagined could be tamed. Now that he’s a family man, his reckless lifestyle has changed, but the savage in him is very much alive. With Janelle focused on her own dreams, he turns his attention back to running the streets... only to meet someone he would have never expected: Chloe Harvarty, the sister of Chris Harvarty, a man whose life he ended in order to protect the woman he loved. His guilt plagues him when he sees the way that his actions have utterly devastated her life and, against his better nature, he’s caught up—feeling obligated to help a woman he begins to feel responsible for. When a simple friendship begins to cross the line over into a lane that he knows he shouldn’t explore, will Outlaw stand strong or will he turn back into his old self and fall back into his womanizing ways?

Book Black Girls Experiencing Their Intersectional Identities in School

Download or read book Black Girls Experiencing Their Intersectional Identities in School written by Crystal L. Edwards and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Girls Experiencing Their Intersectional Identities in School explores the subjective experience of Black girls within the educational context. Based on interviews, diary entries, and focus groups, the author argues that as a result of their intersectional identities, Black girls experience unique challenges and obstacles in the educational setting. Addressing topics ranging from interpersonal relationships, social media, beauty, sexuality, hypervisibility/invisibility, and microaggressions, this book highlights the voices and experiences of Black girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The Girls provide a narrative account of the challenges they face daily in the educational context, describing in detail, the factors that maintain and perpetuate volatile conditions. Additionally, this book explores the coping strategies that this group of Black girls developed to resist and respond to the daily obstacles. Ultimately, this book not only identifies the unique struggles faced by Black girls in schools as a result of their intersectional identities; but most importantly, this work explores pragmatic strategies that can be implemented to create safe and beneficial spaces for Black Girls. The author argues that through the implementation of Black Feminist Pedagogy, an “Ethic of Caring,” and partnerships with Black Girl Empowerment organizations, educational practitioners can mediate the negative experiences and create spaces for growth.

Book When Race Meets Class

Download or read book When Race Meets Class written by Rhonda F. Levine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare, 15-year ethnography, this book follows the lives of individual, low-income African American youth from the beginning of high school into their early adult years. Levine shows how their interaction and experience with multiple institutions (family, school, community) and individuals (parents, friends, teachers, coaches, strangers) shape their hopes, fears, aspirations, and worldviews. The intersectionality of their social identities—how race, class, and gender come together to influence how they come to think about who they are—influences many behaviors that directly contradict their stated aspirations. Affected, too, by limited access to resources, these youths often take a path profoundly different from their stated values and life goals. Levine explores the volatility and constraints underlying their decision-making and behaviors. The book reveals the critical junctures and turning points shaping life trajectories, challenging many long-held assumptions about the persistence of racial inequality by offering new insights on the educational and occupational barriers facing young African Americans.

Book excerpt: Rosa's off on a big adventure doing voluntary work in Brazil after finishing her degree. She flies out to Rio wanting to change the world, but crashes into an arrogant local with a personality a lot less appealing than his brooding good looks. Fico has been working hard to put his family's significant fortunes back on track after the death of his father. He's almost there when he bumps into a fiery English girl who is far too idealistic for his liking and ends up volunteering in a day-care centre alongside her. Mutual attraction overcomes their differing politics, and it isn't long before they spend a passionate night together. But then a misunderstanding sets them on a collision course. Fico vows to teach her a lesson she won't forget, but his plans end in tragedy and they both end up hurt in more ways than one. Rosa moves on to Argentina, but she can't put the past behind her, and neither can Fico. Will they ever be able to overcome their differences and find happiness in each others' arms? This novel is roughly 42,000 words long and is not intended for readers under the age of eighteen. EXCERPT "I thought I should move on. But I couldn't. I can't stop thinking about the night we spent together." There. He'd said it. "It was just sex." "Don't lie. I tried to pretend too, but it was more than that. Wasn't it?" He'd been so sure right up until the moment the words left his lips. What if he was fooling himself? She gave a heavy sigh. "What does it matter? You live in Brazil, I live in England. That pretty much makes dating out of the question. I'm going back to Buenos Aires tomorrow." "I'm not saying it will be easy." "Try impossible." "No. I won't accept that, Rosa." He paced for a few steps, frustration choking him. He felt something for her. Something he needed to explore. She had to see how important this was. "Jesus, Fico. What do you want?" He stopped right in front of her. What didhe want? She looked as miserable as he felt. This wasn't one-sided - she wouldn't have come with him if she didn't have feelings for him too. All of his need and irritation boiled over and he planted a hand on either side of her face, bringing her in for a kiss. As soon as their lips came together, he knew he couldn't let her go. When she kissed him back, relief almost knocked his legs out from under him. He'd been lying to himself ever since he left her in that hospital room. Now she was back in his arms, the truth was inescapable. The attraction between them was more than just physical - it was a force of nature. There wasn't another woman alive he wanted as much as Rosa. He wanted to possess every part of her - mind, soul, body. What that meant in practical terms, he had no idea, but he wasn't going to let her give him a list of excuses and disappear on a plane. They broke apart, both of them breathing hard. "Tell me you didn't feel that." Her eyes were clouded with desire, her lips fuller than ever. "You don't need to say a word. It's written all over your face." He stroked her cheek with the back of his hand and she closed her eyes, leaning into his touch. "Stay with me. Let me show you how it can be." She opened her eyes and looked up at him. He could have spent the rest of his life looking into those huge brown eyes. "I can't."

Read the synopsis below and prepare yourselves for Only a Bad Boy Can Love Her, available January 2021! Balance. Balance was my everything. Growing up as a classically trained ballerina with dreams of being a professional dancer, balance was my life. Everything about me depended on it; my diet, my temper, my sleep and waking schedule. I even dedicated myself to rigorous yoga and martial arts training to learn how to maintain focus by balancing my breath. Balance was literally my everything. Living like this came with several rules and I was the kind of person who didn’t mind following them. Rules were made to protect me; they kept me safe. And I never had issues following them but, to be totally honest, I never once had a reason not to. At least, not until I met him. My name is January Luckeisha Murray, daughter of the honorable Janelle Murray and Luke ‘Outlaw’ Murray, the infamous leader of the Black Bag Mafia, an underground crime society. Most know me as the apple of his eye, a cherished mafia princess who always followed her father’s rules about staying out of the public’s eye. But now daddy’s little girl is all grown up and I’m ready to share my story. This is a story about the time when I decided to break all the rules... The time I fell in love.

Book Racism Gender Identities and Young Children

Download or read book Racism Gender Identities and Young Children written by Paul Connolly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fascinating yet disturbing account of the significance of racism in the lives of five and six year old children, drawing upon data from an in-depth study of an inner-city, multi-ethnic primary school and its surrounding community. It represents one of the only detailed studies to give primacy to the voices of the young children themselves - giving them the space to articulate their own experiences and concerns. Together with detailed observation of the children in the school and local community, it provides an important account of how and why they draw upon discourses on race in the development of their gender identities. The book graphically highlights the understanding that these children have of issues of race, gender and sexuality and the active role they play in using and reworking this knowledge to make sense of their experiences.
