Book Black Denim Lit 7 A Suitable Poison

Download or read book Black Denim Lit 7 A Suitable Poison written by Robert Stiles and published by Black Denim Lit. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The August, 2014 issue edited by Christopher T Garry features 140 pages of never before seen stories from eight new authors, creating narratives that are variously dark, cynical, inspiring, violent and longing. Black Denim Lit is a monthly journal of fiction available on the web and eReaders. "Armed" by Robert Stiles (Sal Noman recieves an arm in the mail.); "Blood Melody" by Tiffany Michelle Brown (Layla is slowly starving in the ocean); "Fluttering in the Remains" by Rhoads Brazos (Manny and his son Theo take over a junkyard and find it inhabited); "The Imperfect Patsy" by John Dromey (Lewis Poindexter finds his work shifting from detecting to killing); "The Quickening" by Kate Morrow (Four friends are bloodbound in dystopia); "The Job" by Scott Blankenship (An assassin makes a change in his routine); "The Helmet" by Sean Monaghan (Salvage experts have a go outrunning ... the government?); "A Suitable Poison" by Linda Boroff (Berta sets off the culture of a magazine publishing firm with its grueling schedule and office politics with wry regard for youth, relationships and power.) The work draws from fantasy, crime, science fiction and drama. Such genre variety is brought together under the common thread of rich characterization. In all the stories this month, these are human beings at odds. Whether they face a gun, a monster, a co-worker or the vastness of space, each of these players respond from a very deep place of truth. And regardless of which genre can be applied, the authors have surprises in store.

Book Depictions of Home in African American Literature

Download or read book Depictions of Home in African American Literature written by Trudier Harris and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Depictions of Home in African American Literature, Trudier Harris analyzes fictional homespaces in African American literature from those set in the time of slavery to modern urban configurations of the homespace. She argues that African American writers often inadvertently create and follow a tradition of portraying dysfunctional and physically or emotionally violent homespaces. Harris explores the roles race and religion play in the creation of homespaces and how geography, space, and character all influence these spaces. Although many characters in African American literature crave safe, happy homespaces and frequently carry such images with them through their mental or physical migrations, few characters experience the formation of healthy homespaces by the end of their journeys. Harris studies the historical, cultural, and literary portrayals of the home in works from well-known authors such as Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and August Wilson as well as lesser-studied authors such as Daniel Black, A.J. Verdelle, Margaret Walker, and Dorothy West.

Book Poison s Dark Works in Renaissance England

Download or read book Poison s Dark Works in Renaissance England written by Miranda Wilson and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poison's Dark Works in Renaissance England considers the ways sixteenth- and seventeenth-century fears of poisoning prompt new models for understanding the world even as the fictive qualities of poisoning frustrate attempts at certainty. Whether English writers invoke literal poisons, as they do in so many revenge dramas, homicide cases, and medical documents, or whether poisoning appears more metaphorically, as it does in a host of theological, legal, philosophical, popular, and literary works, this particular, “invisible” weapon easily comes to embody the darkest elements of a more general English appetite for imagining the hidden correlations between the seen and the unseen. This book is an inherently interdisciplinary project. This book works from the premise that accounts of poisons and their operations in Renaissance texts are neither incidental nor purely sensational; rather, they do moral, political, and religious work which can best be assessed when we consider poisoning as part of the texture of Renaissance culture. Placing little known or less-studied texts (medical reports, legal accounts, or anonymous pamphlets) alongside those most familiar to scholars and the larger public (such as poetry by Edmund Spenser and plays by William Shakespeare and Thomas Middleton) allows us to appreciate the almost gravitational pull exerted by the notion of poison in the Renaissance. Considering a variety of texts, written for disparate audiences, and with diverse purposes, makes apparent the ways this crime functions as both a local problem to be solved and as an apt metaphor for the complications of epistemology.
