Gene Smith ran the Library of Congress's Tibetan Text Publication Project of the United States Public Law 480 (PL480) - an effort to salvage and reprint the Tibetan literature that had been collected by the exile community or by members of the Bhotia communities of Sikkim, Bhutan, India, and Nepal. Smith wrote prefaces to these reprinted books to help clarify and contextualize the particular Tibetan texts: the prefaces served as rough orientations to a poorly understood body of foreign literature. Originally produced in print quantities of twenty, these prefaces quickly became legendary, and soon photocopied collections were handed from scholar to scholar, achieving an almost cult status. These essays are collected here for the first time. The impact of Smith's research on the academic study of Tibetan literature has been tremendous, both for his remarkable ability to synthesize diverse materials into coherent accounts of Tibetan literature, history, and religious thought, and for the exemplary critical scholarship he brought to this field.

Book excerpt: Ge bcags (Gebchak) dgon pa, founded in 1892 in Nang chen, Khams (Qinghai Province, PRC), is still active today with around 250 nuns practising intensive Vajrayāna rituals, yogas and meditation. The nuns’ knowledge goal is embodied, nonconceptual awareness, yet they spend many hours daily reading texts as part of their training. By investigating the whole context of the nuns’ lifeworld and ways of learning, this ethnography questions the role of reading in Ge bcags’ tacit knowledge tradition. At a time when Tibetan learning practices are quickly modernising, this book demonstrates a Buddhist tradition whose textual knowledge is not exactly literal, but cultivated through continuous, whole person learning.

It played a vital role in the formation of Asian cultures that trace much of their heritage to ancient India and China. This volume brings together for the first time studies of the major traditions of Asian meditation as well as material on scientific approaches to meditation. It delves deeply into the individual traditions while viewing each of them from a global perspective, examining both historical and generic connections between meditative practices from numerous historical periods and different parts of the Eurasian continent. It seeks to identify the cultural and historical peculiarities of Asian schools of meditation while recognizing basic features of meditative practice across cultures, thereby taking the first step toward a framework for the comparative study of meditation. The book, accessibly written by scholars from several fields, opens with chapters that discuss the definition and classification of meditation. These are followed by contributions on Yoga and Tantra, which are often subsumed under the broad label of Hinduism; Jainism and Sikhism, Indian traditions not usually associated with meditation; Buddhist approaches found in Southeast Asia, Tibet, and China; and the indigenous Chinese traditions, Daoism and Neo-Confucianism. The final chapter explores recent scientific interest in meditation, which, despite its Western orientation, remains almost exclusively concerned with practices of Asian origin. What is less popular is that his words and teachings, before reaching the Tibetan plateau, were uttered in India and had to pass through Nepal: a fact which would deserve more attention than before. This book is a sort of portrait of that Bengali siddha of the tenth century. In the first chapter, a geographical and historical background is painted: a landscape of waters, kings, polities, and cities, based on epigraphical, numismatic, and archaeological material; on written travelogues of Chinese, Arab, and Italian travellers; on Tibetan accounts and compilations. In the second chapter, the relevant Indo-Tibetan hagiographic sources are described, discussed, and outlined in the context of their tradition. With a view to characterising such a tradition and its Tibetan sprouts, mostly among the Kagyu lineages, the following main entries are introduced: Tantric Buddhism, Yoginītantras, Cakraśamvara, Manobhanga, Cittaviśrāma, Uddiyāna, dākinī, siddha, guru, and śmaśāna. In the third chapter, an attempt is made at a biographical picture of Tilopā, assessing the who, the when, and the where. In the last chapter, a preliminary description is given on the bibliographic details and context of the Indic and the Tibetan sources which have transmitted Tilopā's word.

While exploring the historical developments of the region within Tibet and Bhutan during the 16th and 17th centuries, this book examines how the region, also known simply as Mon, was incorporated into Tibet via an edict issued in 1681 and the subsequent reiterating edict in 1731 by the Lhasa's Tibetan Government. The book also provides an analysis of the term Mon, its etymology and not least its usage on a broader scale. The monograph is based on critical textual research, investigating Tibetan legal documents and the historical texts including auto-/biographies. A number of those sources are presented along with their annotated translations and the facsimile editions. The detailed study of the region is essential and timely. It is not only offering a historical overview of the region but also a wider context and background for understanding the current Sino-Indian border relations. That relation is very much concentrated on this historical Indo-Tibetan border region. Lobsang Tenpa (Ph.D.) is a post-doctoral researcher and visiting fellow at the Center for Development Studies, Shimla, India. His research focuses on the socio-cultural history of the Tibeto-Himalayan region in the framework of mowdern South and Inner Asian Studies.
