Book In the Language of My Captor

Download or read book In the Language of My Captor written by Shane McCrae and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-17 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry (2017) Acclaimed poet Shane McCrae’s latest collection is a book about freedom told through stories of captivity. Historical persona poems and a prose memoir at the center of the book address the illusory freedom of both black and white Americans. In the book’s three sequences, McCrae explores the role mass entertainment plays in oppression, he confronts the myth that freedom can be based upon the power to dominate others, and, in poems about the mixed-race child adopted by Jefferson Davis in the last year of the Civil War, he interrogates the infrequently examined connections between racism and love. Book excerpt: 1998. For years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold the bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees, and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost. When engineer Iris Latch stumbles upon them during a renovation survey, what begins as a welcome break from her cubicle becomes an obsession as she unravels the bank's sordid past-- and soon realizes that the key to the mystery comes at an astonishing price.

Book The Official Cleveland ABC Book

Download or read book The Official Cleveland ABC Book written by and published by Elephia Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Official Cleveland ABC Book is a children's book with photos, teaching young children the alphabet. Each letter is correlated with one photo, and all images are shot in Cleveland, instilling local pride and further creating associations in children's minds between a familiar place, thing, or role model and the letters of the alphabet. The words that correspond to each letter are generic, non-Cleveland terms such that a child will learn regular words, and thus the book is useful for all children, including those outside of the city who may receive the book as a gift or as a Cleveland souvenir. For example, the Terminal Tower is one of the city's greatest symbols, the Cleveland equivalent of New York's Empire State Building. But in the book, "T" does not stand for "Terminal Tower" as that would limit the book's universality. Instead, "B" stands for "Buildings" and the corresponding image is that of the skyline which includes the Terminal Tower amongst other buildings. "T" stands for "Train" and the image depicted is that of a Cleveland heavy rail transit train.

Book Ultimate Cleveland Indians Time Machine Book

Download or read book Ultimate Cleveland Indians Time Machine Book written by Martin Gitlin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the anchor titles in a new “Time Machine” Lyons Press baseball series, The Ultimate Cleveland Indians Time Machine presents a timeline format that not only includes the Indians’ greatest moments—including World Series appearances and individual achievements—but would focus also on some very unusual seasons and events, such as the team’s 20-134 season of 1899 (the absolute worst in baseball history), the "Crybabies" of 1940 (who received this nickname after complaining about their manager to such as extent that fans even turned on them), or the infamous “Ten Cent Beer Night of 1974” (when thousands of drunken fans stormed the field and forced the team to forfeit). Of course there are other events to recall, like 17-year-old Bob Feller making his debut and striking out 17 batters in 1936, or Albert Belle famously pointing at his muscle after a playoff opponent claimed (rightly) that he had corked his bat and one of his teammates sneaked into the umpire's room to steal it back so the umps could not find out that it was corked. There are dozens of impressive, wild, wacky and wonderful stories over the years regarding Indians history and Gitlin is the perfect person to write it with his trademark humor and thorough knowledge of Indians lore.

Book The Book of Clevelanders

Download or read book The Book of Clevelanders written by Burrows Brothers Company and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Clevelanders: A Biographical Dictionary of Living Men of the City of Cleveland From time to time ephemeral publications spring up pretending to add to biographical literature sketches of "leading" and "prominent" men - for a consideration. There is no limit to this form of exploitation on the one hand and vanity on the other. Meanwhile the main object of any such attempt, the setting forth of the facts, without comment, is lost and with it whatever value might otherwise attach to the print. This is the first book of its kind published in Cleveland for Clevelanders. That it is no larger is due to the modesty of hundreds of men who have refrained from filling up the inquiry blanks sent them lest their motive be misunderstood. To this cause must be ascribed the absence from the pictorial pages of many photographs of men whose biographical sketches are here included. The book has been confined to living subjects because it is intended to make this a current publication, dealing with current matters. Other publications are available for historical purposes. Moreover, its main purpose was to offer a list of the younger men - the men who are making the Greater Cleveland-to-come, rather than their elders. No attempt has been made to select for the purposes of this publication any class of men, beyond the thought that they should represent the city of today. No space for any purpose has been sold in this book. The remarks following each name are autobiographical. Not a word has been added and except for unimportant changes affecting the phraseology employed, every man's description is his own. Too many have modestly declined to enter as fully into their achievements as the publishers might have wished. But while the comment, here and there, may seem brief, it was deemed best to adhere to truth and facts, no matter how briefly stated, than to err on the other side. Nothing more is claimed for this volume than accuracy and dependability as to the sketches included. Another issue may induce co-operation by many others whose names are among the missing.
