Download or read book Mineral Resources of the United States Vol 2 written by United States Geological Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, Vol. 2: Calendar Year 1908; Nonmetallic Products The year 1908 Will be remembered as one of general depression in the coal-mining industry and comparable to some extent with the lean years 1894, 1895, and 1896, yet the total production in 1908 exceeded that of any year in our history with the single exception of 1907, the year of record-making activity and production. In 1907, or at least until the panic developed in October, the principal com plaint of operators was the scarcity of labor to work the mines and of railroad cars and motive power to transport the roduct. No such difficulties were experienced in 1908, for although the output in the year under review was per cent 'less than in 1907, there was a pronounced increase in the number of men employed, both in the anthracite and bituminous mines, and the transportation equip ment was at all times ample to take care of the diminished tonnage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bituminous Coal Storage Practice Upon the recommendation Of the Illinois Fuel Administration, a systematic campaign was instituted by the United States Fuel Ad ministration in Washington, urging people to store coal. The con elusions and recommendations of the Engineering Experiment Station Circular no. 6* were reprinted in condensed form and given wide publicity by several State Fuel Administrations, by the Retail Coal Dealers Association Of Illinois and Wisconsin, and by the National Board Of Fire Underwriters. As a result of this campaign, it is safe to say that never before had so much attention been paid to the storage of coal as was the case in the Spring and summer of 1918. During the past year unusual attention has also been given to the subject of coal storage in England and in Canada and the con elusions which were reached in these countries, and which will be referred to later in fuller detail, agree very closely with the experience in the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Weathering of Coal The bituminous coal producers have a more uniform demand throughout the year for all sizes and grades of their product than the anthracite producers can expect. Large power plants, naval coaling stations and railroads are the principal interests storing bituminous coal, except around the great lakes. At nearly all the cities at the head of lakes, the coal companies themselves store great quantities of coal during the season of navigation. Part of this coal is for local consumption, but a larger part of it is for reshipment by rail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Simplification of Sizes and Terminology of High Volatile Bituminous Coal

Download or read book Simplification of Sizes and Terminology of High Volatile Bituminous Coal written by United States Department Of Commerce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simplification of Sizes and Terminology of High Volatile Bituminous Coal: Handled Over Docks at American Head of the Great Lakes The primary function of the division of simplified practice is to assist industrial groups to eliminate unnecessary variety of a given product and thereby reduce manufacturing and distributing costs. In order to secure maximum results, such problems should be handled on a national scale. Prior to 1929 the division confined its work to projects which from their inception were national in scope. It has, however, become increasingly evident that there is a large field of useful cooperative service in assisting to develop programs applying primarily to only a part of the United States. Obviously some limit must be set up beyond which the division can not be expected to go, and for the present it has been decided to limit this new activity to (a) natural products or commodities, the nature of which varies in different parts of the country, and (b) to programs which hold forth a definite promise of ultimately developing into national recommendations. There are certain problems, notably in connection with natural products, which can not be effectively handled on a national scale until they have been successfully solved within a limited area or region. A natural rock, not subject to the precise control that governs fabricated materials, exemplifies this class of product. Some aspects of such a problem may always be regional, as, for example, the color in local stone. In certain other aspects, identical characteristics may be found in other regions, and in such cases the regional solutions may prove to be nationally applicable. Book Mining and Scientific Press Vol 99

Download or read book Mining and Scientific Press Vol 99 written by T. A. Rickard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Scientific Press, Vol. 99: From July to December, 1909 Great deal of moisture is shipped to the smelters, that might be eliminated, and thus efl'ect important economies. For example, many moderately argillaceous ores contain 7 per cent or more of moisture. This material when dried will not re-absorb water from the air as readily as will coal or coke. In a good dryer from seven to eight pounds of water will be driven off per pound of coal burned. If ores were dried to-one per cent moisture, the elimination of 6 per cent would consume, only about 17 pounds of coal per ton, and at a Western price of $10 per ton for bituminous the cost would be less than 9 cents, plus extra labor. On the Tonopah ore and concentrate, for instance, which contain ap proximately 7 per cent water, the freight rate, on a valuation of $300 per ton, is $18; a saving of 6 per cent in that case would amount to per ton. The Coeur d'alene concentrate averages about 13 per cent moisture as delivered to the smelter. The freight on this material to Colorado is $8, and a saving of 12 per cent would reduce the cost 96 cents per ton. The so-called 'sulphurets' from the mills on the California 'gold Belt' contain from 3 to 10 per cent moisture, and the freight to market varies, se cording to distance, from to $6. Even here it may pay to dry the ore. In many plants enough heat is going to waste to effect this saving. The Nevada silicious ores would not benefit by such treatment. They rarely hold more than 2 per cent of moisture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
