Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bittinger and Bedinger Families: Descendants of Adam Budinger The plan upon which this family history is arranged is one frequently used, and should be clear after a short examination; those persons to whom a special section is allotted are designated by an Arabic numeral aside of their name, and the section relating to them by the same (Roman) numeral; the line of their ancestry back to the emigrant, in a parenthesis following the name. The diagram index is (it is believed) a new idea, and I hope it will prove intelligible and helpful. The sources of the history contained in this pamphlet are court, church and family records, and published local histories; in particular, the histories of York and Adams Counties, Pennsylvania, contain so many items that the mere references would materially increase the bulk of the work. I have used many letters, and interviews with members of the family, so numerous that it would be impracticable to give the authority for every statement. Thanks for help are due to so many of my kinsfolk, near and remote, living and dead, that I cannot particularize them, and must ask those living to accept this general acknowledgment. Bittinger, who was a Presbyterian minister starting in Virginia and Pennsylvania, and then later moving on to become the pulpit for the Westminster Church in Washington. The collection contains Bittinger's journal, his published "Historical Discourse," and the Presbytery of Washington City from Bittinger's time. The journal talks of Bittinger's own personal experiences through most of his life. "Historical Discourse" provides one of Bittinger's sermons. Also includes genealogical information concerning the lineage of the Bittinger family. Also contains three scrapbooks, each pertaining to the Bittinger family (also Bedinger). One of the scrapbooks was created by Isabella M. Wilson, daughter-in-law to Benjamin Bittinger. The scrapbook contains photographs and information about her two sons, Joseph Wilson and Charles, and their early years. The other two scrapbooks were created by Edith Gay, the wife of Charles Bittinger. These scrapbooks contain pictures of her life while at Radcliffe College and Duxbury.
