Book The Chronicles of the Pharaoh S Daughter

Download or read book The Chronicles of the Pharaoh S Daughter written by Davina Rhine and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicles of the Pharaohs Daughter presents a passionate, ironic, and symbolic collection of poems that blends antiquity, history, memory, reincarnation, wealth, poverty, sex, love, life, birth, and afterlife. Poet Davina Rhine shares a tormented adventure lamenting the loss of her idealized father and recalling the grudging acceptance of a womans experience in domesticity, mundane work, and child-rearing. This confessional poet, torn by grief, erotica, responsibility, mature love, and dreams, goes from sinner to forgiver in the course of the collection. Unlike other confessionals, her journey in dreams and everyday life does not end in misery, but in rapture both strong and defiant as she is resurrected. The clashing metaphors of the past and present take us all over the ancient world and into the heart of modern love; the journey begins with an act of vengeance for the women raped at the birth of Rome. Rhine explores the sacred, the vulgar, and the human experience as her poems explode into sharp, dizzying shards of emotion and drama. The Chronicles of the Pharaohs Daughter is a collection that exhales classical archaeology while reinventing the past with the vigor and vision of a strong, defiant activist and writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smith examines the different ways in which gay men use pop music, both as producers and consumers, and how, in turn, pop uses gay men. He asks what role culture plays in shaping identity and why pop continues to thrill gay men. These 40 essays and interviews look at how performers, from The Kinks' Ray Davies to Gene's Martin Rossiter, have used pop as a platform to explore and articulate, conform to or contest notions of sexuality and gender. A defence of cultural differences and an attack on cultural elitism, Seduced and Abandoned is as passionate and provocative as pop itself.

Book Mystical Love in the German Baroque

Download or read book Mystical Love in the German Baroque written by Isabella van Elferen and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystical Love in the German Baroque: Theology, Poetry, Music identifies the cultural and devotional conventions underlying expressions of mystical love in poetry and music of the German baroque. It sheds new light on the seemingly erotic overtones in settings of the Song of Songs and dialogues between Christ and the faithful soul in late 17th- and early 18th-century cantatas by Heinrich Sch tz, Dieterich Buxtehude, and Johann Sebastian Bach. While these compositions have been interpreted solely as a secularizing tendency within devotional music of the baroque period, Isabella van Elferen demonstrates that they need to be viewed instead as intensifications of the sacred. Based on a wide selection of previously unedited or translated 17th- and 18th-century sources, van Elferen describes the history and development of baroque poetic and musical love discourses, from Sch tz's early works through Buxtehude's cantatas and Bach's cantatas and Passions. This long and multilayered discursive history of these compositions considers the love poetry of Petrarch, European reception of petrarchan imagery and traditions, its effect on the madrigal in Germany, and the role of Catholic medieval mystics in baroque Lutheranism. Van Elferen shows that Bach's compositional technique, based on the emotional characteristics of text and music rather than on the depiction of single words, allows the musical expression of mystical love to correspond closely to contemporary literary and theological conceptions of this affect.

Book First Time Ever

Download or read book First Time Ever written by Peggy Seeger and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SUNDAY TIMES AND TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEARSHORTLISTED FOR THE PENDERYN MUSIC BOOK PRIZEPeggy Seeger is one of folk music's most influential artists and songwriters. Born in New York City in 1935, she enjoyed a childhood steeped in music and left-wing politics - they remain her lifeblood. After college, she travelled to Russia and China - against US advice - before arriving in London, where she met the man with whom she would raise three children and share the next thirty-three years: Ewan MacColl. Together, they helped lay the foundations of the British folk revival, through the influential Critics Group and the landmark BBC Radio Ballads series. And as Ewan's muse, she inspired one of the twentieth century's most popular love songs, 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. With a clear eye and generous spirit, Peggy writes of a rollercoaster life - of birth and abortion, sex and infidelity, devotion and betrayal - in a luminous, beautifully realised account.
