Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenirs of Travel, Vol. 1 Some of her letters to her friends, written during the hurry of travel, were yet so graphic and attractive that they were given to the press; and being reproduced all through the country, excited an almost universal desire for the publication of a full account of her travels. Those friends who were admitted to her intimacies at home, he came aware what a rich mine of pleasing information, and interesting adventure, existed in the various memoranda she had made while in Europe. Their solicitations, and reiterated persuasions from literary friends in all parts of the Union, led to the preparation of this volume. The original journals and letters have been carefully revised by their author, additional memorials have been added, and many parts that in the original form necessarily partook largely of the personal and egotistic, have been omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Midnight Sunbeams: Or Bits of Travel Through the Land of the Norseman The following sketches of a journey in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are given to the public in the hope that their perusal will furnish information concerning the people, and attractions, of countries which are being visited by Americans more and more each succeeding year. While they may impart some useful knowledge to intending travellers over the same ground, it is hoped as well that they will furnish entertainment to those who travel only through books. The memories of the days passed in the North are so sunny and delightful, that I wish others to enjoy them with me; and if the reader receives a clear impression of the novel experiences and thorough pleasure attending a journey through Norseland, and partakes, if only in a limited degree, of my enthusiasm over the character of the people and the imposing grandeurs of nature, the object of this book will be accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonder Stories of Travel The Turkish battery ashore thundered a royal salute to General Grant as the Vandalia which bore him from port to port in the Mediterranean steamed up to her anchorage in the harbor of Smyrna. Thirty great iron-clads followed in quick succession; men-of-war crowded the harbor. They had been ordered into Turkish waters on account of the war then raging between Turkey and Russia. From ship and shore thousands of spectators watched the Vandalia's approach with eager interest, and from the foremast of every vessel and the flagstaffs of the city the American flag waved the General a glad and hearty welcome. Book Travel Reminiscences and Experiences Classic Reprint

Download or read book Travel Reminiscences and Experiences Classic Reprint written by Emil Klopfer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel, Reminiscences and Experiences But it was still more attractive in the sunny spring-time, when vessels, bound for tropical coun tries, glided on the tide, or in tow of the puffing, snorting, little tugs, down the E)be. My desire to go along was then often so strong that I could hardly conquer my inclination to run away from home to see the world. These scenes, so dear to me, worked in such a way upon my mind that it became my one ambition to leave Europe as soon as possible. During the day my thoughts were wandering about in different parts of our beautiful world, and at night, in pleasant dreams I found myself amid the forest, or on the plains of South and North America. When I quitted school I was scarcely fourteen years of age, but in spite of my youth I would have left Europe at once with pleasure. In Germany no one will admit self-reliance to be a virtue in young people, and all elderly persons insist that they must be guided exactly as little children. In my family the same idea prevailed, and an aversion to causing trouble by any act of mine, determined me to submit to the wishes of my people, and to accept' the position of an apprentice to a commercial firm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Travel Little need be said in introduction to the present volume. It is made up of selections, unconnected in their character, from regular and copious notes of travel, which were penned or rather pencilled by the author under various circumstances, either at the moment, or soon after the objects and events they delineate were presented or occurred. The larger proportion of them, as will be seen, are introduced in the form of a diary, and are indeed but a simple copy, with some corrections and additions, not affecting the main matter, from the original journal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits of Travel, or Tales of Men and Cities Airman of what is intended to be (like the present volumes) light reading, are sometimes temptel to make prefatory acknowledgments that illness and other de pressing circumstances have attended the progress of their work. I doubt the policy of this plan either in propitiating the critic or in interesting the public. It is very questionable whether the state of mind or body ia uences the pen when it is able to move at all. Many a farce has been composed 'in moods of hypochondria, and the deepest tragedies have often been the produc tions of the merriest fellows. But even admitting the contrary of my theorems, the captions reader is too fond of his privilege of finding faults, to receive a warn ing that he is to meet with them at every turn; while the most tolerant must be prejudiced against an c 'ort to amuse, prefaced by a desponding face or a suit of mourning. The better way is, surely, to let readers be cheerful and contented while they may. On this prin ciple, I hope mine will believe that the following pages were written in high health, high fortune, and spirits. With a friendly few, who may find reason to imagine the contrary, I have little fear of its doing any mischief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Six Voyages: To Various Parts of the World, Made Between the Years 1799 and 1841 My Dear Son: As you are just entering upon the stage of life, from which I shall soon make my exit, it is to me a heartfelt pleasure to dedicate to you this volume of my voyages, as a slight memorial of the humble services of your father and grandfather to our beloved country. Though your ancestors have added but a single grain in the great scale of national aggrandizement, still I hope and trust their humble efforts to promote the interest and independence of our father-land will, like the widow's mite, be accepted. For as one star differs from another star in glory, so do men differ in mind and capacity to lead and govern their fellow-men. Some, like a brilliant orb in the firmament, fix upon themselves the eyes and admiration of a whole nation. It was emphatically so with the immortal Washington, who, doubtless, was raised up by Providence to lead the armies and direct the energies of a few struggling, infant States to successful independence and subsequent national honor and glory. His fame, like that of his great prototype who led the children of Israel through the wilderness, will endure to the end of time.
