They're looking for a confidently feminine woman or "Keeper," and Keepers are in short supply in many parts of the United States.

Book Ethnographies of Deservingness

Download or read book Ethnographies of Deservingness written by Jelena Tošić and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-08-12 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claims around 'who deserves what and why' moralise inequality in the current global context of unprecedented wealth and its ever more selective distribution. Ethnographies of Deservingness explores this seeming paradox and the role of moralized assessments of distribution by reconnecting disparate discussions in the anthropology of migration, economic anthropology and political anthropology. This edited collection provides a novel and systematic conceptualization of Deservingness and shows how it can serve as a prime and integrative conceptual prism to ethnographically explore transforming welfare states, regimes of migration, as well as capitalist social reproduction and relations at large.

Book Russian Style

  • Author : Julie A. Cassiday

Download or read book Russian Style written by Julie A. Cassiday and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2023 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades after the turn of the millennium, Vladimir Putin's control over Russian politics and society grew at a steady pace. As the West liberalized its stance on sexuality and gender, Putin's Russia moved in the opposite direction, remolding the performance of Russian citizenship according to a neoconservative agenda characterized by increasingly exaggerated gender roles. By connecting gendered and sexualized citizenship to developments in Russian popular culture, Julie A. Cassiday argues that heteronormativity and homophobia became a kind of politicized style under Putin's leadership. However, while the multiple modes of gender performativity generated in Russian popular culture between 2000 and 2010 supported Putin's neoconservative agenda, they also helped citizens resist and protest the state's mandate of heteronormativity. Examining everything from memes to the Eurovision Song Contest and self-help literature, Cassiday untangles the discourse of gender to argue that drag, or travesti, became the performative trope par excellence in Putin's Russia. Provocatively, Cassiday further argues that the exaggerated expressions of gender demanded by Putin's regime are best understood as a form of cisgender drag. This smart and lively study provides critical, nuanced analysis of the relationship between popular culture and politics in Russia during Putin's first two decades in power.

Book excerpt: A compelling story of entrepreneurial determination Are you ready to embark on an inspiring journey of resilience and success, especially for those often facing daunting challenges in our society? Dana Frank's debut book, Get Up & Get On It! A Black Entrepreneur's Lessons on Creating Legacy & Wealth, is a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of individuals from marginalized communities, such as People of Color and women navigating the male-dominated business world. This captivating narrative traces its roots back to 1950 when Gerald Frank, a determined Black man, arrived in Seattle at the tender age of 18. Fleeing the violence of Detroit and the suffocating grip of Jim Crow Laws, Gerald carried nothing but dreams and drumsticks in his heart. His unwavering belief that he could carve out a better life set the stage for an incredible journey. Today, over 70 years later, the real estate empire forged by Gerald and his wife, Theresa, in Seattle's Central District continues to flourish under the guidance of the third generation of the Frank family. But theirs was not a journey paved with silver spoons. In Get Up & Get On It!, Dana Frank paints a vivid picture of the hurdles her family faced. Dana herself confronted racial barriers as her father made unconventional business choices. When her parents' thirty-two-year marriage ended in a bitter divorce, Dana and her mother emerged as fearless business partners, facing the brink of bankruptcy left by her father. Their story is a testament to fortitude, perseverance, bravery, and unrelenting hard work. As a single mother and entrepreneur, Dana learned the power of leveraging her network, staying true to her story, and envisioning a brighter future. Today, as the President of The TD Frank Family Properties, Dana's mission is clear: to teach how to create generational wealth by working smarter, not harder. She emphasizes a timeless truth: "Equity grows, cash erodes," and reveals how real estate investments can be a game-changer for future generations. Dana firmly believes that anyone, regardless of their birth circumstances, can rewrite the trajectory of their lives. Get Up & Get On It: A Black Entrepreneur's Lessons on Creating Legacy & Wealth offers: Personal stories filled with humor and invaluable insights on reshaping your inner narrative. A straightforward yet potent approach to building generational wealth through the R.E.A.L. method: Research, Expand, Amplify, and Leverage connections. Guidance on gaining advantages, progressing, fostering empowerment, and achieving success in wealth-building through real estate. A treasure trove of historical photos that illuminate the family's ties to challenging real estate markets and their connections with the vibrant music scene of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, featuring Dana's uncle, Quincy Jones. Original social-justice poems penned by Dana Frank herself throughout the book, amplifying the narrative that People of Color can indeed "Get Up and Get On It!" Get Up & Get On It: A Black Entrepreneur's Lessons on Creating Legacy & Wealth is a compelling story of determination that challenges conventional paths to freedom. It is essential reading not only for business influencers, entrepreneurs, executives, and philanthropists but also for anyone seeking inspiration and the keys to unlocking their full potential. Book George Washington Is Cash Money

Download or read book George Washington Is Cash Money written by Cory O'Brien and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREPARE TO BE BEAKED BY THE MAJESTIC EAGLE OF HISTORY Most of us are familiar with the greatest hits and legendary heroes of US history. In George Washington Is Cash Money, Cory O’Brien, author of Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes, does away with the pomp and circumstance and calls America’s history what it is: one long, violent soap opera. In his signature clever, crude, and cuss-ridden style, O’Brien reminds us that: · Teddy Roosevelt stopped bullets with his manly chest · Harriet Tubman avoided danger by having prophetic seizures. · Joseph Smith invented Mormonism by staring into a hat full of rocks. · Billy the Kid was finally defeated by the smell of fresh bacon. And there’s plenty more Star Spangled stupidity where that came from.

His new role of neighbor to the beautiful witch he’s been in love with since forever is a welcome plot twist…but Jace’s chief instinct is to protect. And a witch with as much raw power as Katie won’t be claimed on anyone’s terms but her own. Protected The powerful witches of Diablo Lake are taking back control. No longer will they be pawns in the town’s misguided power plays. Chosen to lead the charge, Aimee Benton can’t possibly fall for a werewolf—especially a Pack Alpha. Problem is, Mac Pembry is as irresistible as he is infuriating. One touch of Aimee’s powerful magic and Mac immediately needs more. Not only is his witch incredibly smart, but her quiet strength and empathetic heart soothe both wolf and man. But when the Pembry pack breaks a sacred law, Aimee shuts him out. This time the wolves have gone too far.
