Book excerpt: Journalist Mark Manning has been successfully running his family's newspaper, The Dumont Daily Register, for several years now, and he sits on the board of two local companies, Quatro Press and Ashton Mills. So when the respective CEOs of these companies discuss a merger, it is only natural that Manning be interested in the proceedings. What's more, Manning's lover Neil, an architect, is designing a new house for Ashton's CEO, Gillian Reece. Reece is a business friend of Manning but not a friend to many else; she is generally considered overly aggressive and fastidious. When Manning assigns Glee Savage, the newspaper's society reporter, to cover Reece's new home, the subsequent meeting between the two does not end well: Savage huffs off in a fury but not before ferociously bitch slapping Reece in front of everyone. With Reece's cheek still smarting, more bad news comes as the accountant performing due diligence for the merger reports some very questionable items regarding Ashton's books. It seems as though things couldn't go much worse for the unpleasant Reece. That is, until she is murdered. The discovery of her body is greeted with great surprise, but perhaps not much regret on the part of most who knew her. Still, with Manning's friend and employee Glee Savage as the obvious and primary suspect, he cannot resist wading in to this most unsound of business dealings.

Download or read book Lovely Little Liar written by J. Kenner and published by Martini & Olive. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She’s not the woman I thought … but dammit, she’s the woman I want. I never thought of myself as cynical, but getting dumped at the altar changes a man. Now, I’m all about my job. About building my business and getting on with my life. Don’t get me wrong; I still love women. I love the way they look. The way they smell. The way they feel. Especially the way they feel. And I’ve pretty much made it my mission to give each and every woman who shares my bed the ride of her life. But getting close? Getting serious? Giving a woman my trust again? Yeah, that’s not going to happen. Or so I thought. Then I met her. It’s funny how things can change in a heartbeat. How one case of mistaken identity can change everything. But there she was, all business and completely uninterested in me. And damned if I didn’t want her. Crave her. Most of all, I wanted to help her. To keep her and her sister safe. But the more I get to know her, the more I want her. The whole package. The complete woman. And the miracle is that she wants me, too. Trouble is, we’ve both been burned before. Now, I know one thing for certain—the only way that we’ll survive the heat that crackles between us is if we both find the courage to leap into the fire together. Lovely Little Liar is a novella originally published as Bitch Slap. Minor edits, such as expanded scenes, have been made to this book.

Download or read book Bitch Slap written by J. Kenner and published by Martini & Olive. This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first time I met her I wanted to slap her. The second time, I knew I had to have her. As for the third time, a gentleman doesn't tell. So I guess it's a good thing I'm no gentleman ... right? Let's get this out of the way, right off the bat: I love women. I love the way they look. The way they smell. The way they feel. Especially the way they feel. And I've pretty much made it my mission to give each and every woman who shares my bed the ride of her life. Then I met her. Bitchy as hell and completely uninterested in me. And damned if I didn't want her. Crave her. I told myself I only wanted to tame her. That it was all about the challenge. I never expected to break through that ice queen exterior and find the softness underneath. Never expected how wild she'd be between the sheets or the way she'd cry my name with such sincere intensity when I totally rocked her world. Most of all, I never expected to fall for her. But I did. And the question is, now that I know I want her, how the hell do I go about keeping her?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Most Infamous Studio Session Ever Documented In the summer of 2002, I began to chronicle my Daily events on a Major Label recording session with a bidding-war band, an infamous producer, and a seemingly limitless budget. Every night, after a long session with these crazy characters, I posted up the day's events. The results were spectacular. As Metro reporter Gina Arnold put it, "Mixerman is supposed to be writing about recording techniques, but somehow, through that prism, he has hit upon a gripping story." That's right, it was even mentioned in random newspapers at the time. When I began posting my story, I had an audience of 200. By week 4 that grew to 25,000. And by the last entry, I was posting to the delight of over 150,000 music business professionals around the world. There were discussion threads all over the internet, debating every decision we made along the way. The story went viral before viral was even really a thing. Most people find them sidesplittingly hilarious. Others find them reprehensible, but that too is rather hilarious. The Daily Adventures are also available as an audiobook, which has been produced like an old radio show, with music, foley, sound ƒx, and characters performed by some of the most well-known record producers and engineers of all time.

Book excerpt: Bitch is a bitch of a word. It used to be a straightforward insult, but today—after so many variations and efforts to reject or reclaim the word-it's not always entirely clear what it means. Bitch is a chameleon. There are good bitches and bad bitches; sexy bitches and psycho bitches; boss bitches and even perfect bitches. This eye-opening deep-dive takes us on a journey spanning a millennium, from its humble beginnings as a word for a female dog through to its myriad meanings today, proving that sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks. It traces the colorful history and ever-changing meaning of this powerful and controversial word, and its relevance within broader issues of feminism, gender, race and sexuality. Despite centuries of censorship and attempts to ban it, bitch has stood the test of time. You may wonder: is the word going away anytime soon? Bitch, please.

Download or read book American Oracle written by David W. Blight and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The ghosts of the Civil War never leave us, as David Blight knows perhaps better than anyone, and in this superb book he masterfully unites two distant but inextricably bound events.”―Ken Burns Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963, a century after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Martin Luther King, Jr., declared, “One hundred years later, the Negro still is not free.” He delivered this speech just three years after the Virginia Civil War Commission published a guide proclaiming that “the Centennial is no time for finding fault or placing blame or fighting the issues all over again.” David Blight takes his readers back to the centennial celebration to determine how Americans then made sense of the suffering, loss, and liberation that had wracked the United States a century earlier. Amid cold war politics and civil rights protest, four of America’s most incisive writers explored the gulf between remembrance and reality. Robert Penn Warren, the southern-reared poet-novelist who recanted his support of segregation; Bruce Catton, the journalist and U.S. Navy officer who became a popular Civil War historian; Edmund Wilson, the century’s preeminent literary critic; and James Baldwin, the searing African-American essayist and activist—each exposed America’s triumphalist memory of the war. And each, in his own way, demanded a reckoning with the tragic consequences it spawned. Blight illuminates not only mid-twentieth-century America’s sense of itself but also the dynamic, ever-changing nature of Civil War memory. On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the war, we have an invaluable perspective on how this conflict continues to shape the country’s political debates, national identity, and sense of purpose.
