Those kinds of people have layers and layers of mystery to them that no one may be able to understand, even the people closest to them. As human beings we will always attempt to get a better understanding of the actions of the people we love. What we don't want to admit to ourselves is that it's because of our selfish need to have an advantage over the ones that we say we love. In fact we are all playing a game of chess with each other to get the things that we need to survive. Everyday we move into our positions to checkmate the people in this world. If we are being honest with ourselves we all want to leave a mark that this world will never forget. This is the story of a man who is playing the game of chess with ruthlessness. Theodore Milton is a man from New Orleans, Louisiana whose father once ruled the underground economy with an iron fist before being shot down. Theodore has taken it upon himself to pick up where his father had left off and pick up his crown to the underground kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do survivors recover from the worst urban flood in American history, a disaster that destroyed nearly the entire physical landscape of a city, as well as the mental and emotional maps that people use to navigate their everyday lives? This question has haunted the survivors of Hurricane Katrina and informed the response to the subsequent flooding of New Orleans across many years. Left to Chance takes us into two African American neighborhoods—working-class Hollygrove and middle-class Pontchartrain Park—to learn how their residents have experienced “Miss Katrina” and the long road back to normal life. The authors spent several years gathering firsthand accounts of the flooding, the rushed evacuations that turned into weeks- and months-long exile, and the often confusing and exhausting process of rebuilding damaged homes in a city whose local government had all but failed. As the residents’ stories make vividly clear, government and social science concepts such as “disaster management,” “restoring normality,” and “recovery” have little meaning for people whose worlds were washed away in the flood. For the neighbors in Hollygrove and Pontchartrain Park, life in the aftermath of Katrina has been a passage from all that was familiar and routine to an ominous world filled with raw existential uncertainty. Recovery and rebuilding become processes imbued with mysteries, accidental encounters, and hasty adaptations, while victories and defeats are left to chance.

Download or read book If We Were Electric written by Patrick Earl Ryan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If We Were Electric’s twelve stories celebrate New Orleans in all of its beautiful peculiarities: macabre and magical, muddy and exquisite, sensual and spiritual. The stunning debut collection finds its characters in moments of desire and despair, often stuck on the verge of a great metamorphosis, but burdened by some unreasonable love. These are stories about missed opportunities, about people on the outside who don’t fit in, about the consequences of not mustering enough courage to overcome the binds. In “Feux Follet,” an old man’s grief attracts supernatural lights in the dark Louisiana swamps. An exploding transformer’s raw, unnerving energy in the title story matches the strange, ferocious temper of an unlucky hustler. “Blackout” sets the profound numbness of a young man physically abused by his mentally unstable partner beside the meaningful beauty of an unexpected moment of joy with someone else. The teenage narrator in “Before Las Blancas” is so overwhelmed by his sexuality that he abandons everything and everyone he’s known to live in a happy illusion . . . in Mexico. And “Where It Takes Us” is a poignant, understated snapshot of a gay man who accompanies his straight, HIV-positive brother to the race track to bond again.
Download or read book Ma am written by Lue Wyatt and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ma'am is a story of an older woman who has lived a life of hard labor. She was a woman that not only worked hard, she also loved as well. Raised in poverty, married young with children did the only thing she knew, worked. Later in life, due to curcumstances that has happened to so many women, adopted five grandchildren. Later she discovered to her dismay, that while caring for children, all her life (siblings, her own children, later her own grandchildren). She had forgotten about her own personal life, needs and desires. While trying to ignore it, becomes clinically depressed. Youth had slipped away, time had forgotten her. Once a beautiful red head, and now merely a shell of her former self. Looking into the bathroom mirror one morning, she discovers the answer. All through her busy life, she held all the emotions in that a woman experiences. She had never talked to anyone before, but now in the privacy of her home, she could pour out all the pain and frustrations, that she had felt for so many years. Talking to the reflection in the mirror, and eventually finds peace of mind. Ive tried to describe how a woman would react under this stressful circumstances in which she finds herself. In trying to deal with her own personal life and still be responsible for the care of five grandchildren. I have written of a woman who is strong, life made her that way. She also has feet of clay. Ive tried to portray her as being very human, because we all are. In Maams story, she deals with the problems of aging, but at the same time, she sees humor in everyday happenings, and has the ability to laugh at herself as well with other people. The adventures of a woman, and Maam, are at times hilarious, but also truthful, but again, it is all part of lifes story. In my story of Maam, the woman has no name because she speaks for umpteen thousands of women all over the world. She also believes in her God, but the older she gets, the more issues she has. Maam is truthful about her triumphs and her failings as in all our lives, there are many.
Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.
