Book excerpt: Bishop was first a paratrooper with the American Army for 4 years, he joined the Canadian Army and has put in about nine and a half months, but he has found a home in the Canadian Navy as a soldier. Now a member of the HMCS Vergil a UN Canadian Navy Patrol boat in Hai Phong Harbor, his missions have changed and so has his attitude. For once he isn't working alone, but in a way he still is. After helping Sergeant Wilkins and the Polish Contingent NCO Sergeant Pogozinski to disarm a dud smart bomb that landed in the basement of NVA headquarters in Hanoi, Bishop, who was recognized by Commander Holcomb on the USS Forrestal as the 'Canadian Yankee' has established himself amongst the crew as a man of action so to speak. He's unlike any Canadian soldier they have ever known. But that notoriety may soon be catching up with him. Major Tennyson is on a mission of his own in Hong Kong along with several other members of the embassy. Wilkins has decided to take Mai back to her farm so she can meet with her father whom she hasn't seen since being ordered to work at the local military hospital. The invasion of the south isn't going well, but that isn't what the government is telling the populace. Horst and Werner have started their own mission. Werner is also in Hong Kong trying to gather information for his report on illegal funds from UNESCO via a South American country that's funneling the money to North Vietnam in exchange for something of high value. Bishop has a feeling about a ship by the name of Guevara that's parked on one of the North's sunken docks. It's loaded with hollow wheat, but that's only the cover, the real menace is underneath, and he has to try and fi nd a way to discover the truth and destroy it before it can be used against the Americans. Captain La Rouch has a traffi c accident, but will he live?

Book The Church at War The Military Activities of Bishops Abbots and Other Clergy in England c 900 1200

Download or read book The Church at War The Military Activities of Bishops Abbots and Other Clergy in England c 900 1200 written by Daniel M. G. Gerrard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fighting bishop or abbot is a familiar figure to medievalists and much of what is known of the military organization of England in this period is based on ecclesiastical evidence. Unfortunately the fighting cleric has generally been regarded as merely a baron in clerical dress and has consequently fallen into the gap between military and ecclesiastical history. This study addresses three main areas: which clergy engaged in military activity in England, why and when? By what means did they do so? And how did others understand and react to these activities? The book shows that, however vivid such characters as Odo of Bayeux might be in the historical imagination, there was no archetypal militant prelate. There was enormous variation in the character of the clergy that became involved in warfare, their circumstances, the means by which they pursued their military objectives and the way in which they were treated by contemporaries and described by chroniclers. An appreciation of the individual fighting cleric must be both thematically broad and keenly aware of his context. Such individuals cannot therefore be simply slotted into easy categories, even (or perhaps especially) when those categories are informed by contemporary polemic. The implications of this study for our understanding of clerical identity are considerable, as the easy distinction between clerics acting in a secular or ecclesiastical capacity almost entirely breaks down and the legal structures of the period are shown to be almost as equivocal and idiosyncratic as the literary depictions. The implications for military history are equally striking as organisational structures are shown to be more temporary, fluid and 'political' than had previously been understood.

Book Nuts to Butts

Download or read book Nuts to Butts written by R. W. Bishop Usn (Ret) and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Rich Bishop, reporting to basic training for the US Navy was reminiscent of Dorothy leaving Kansas and ending up in Oz. The transition from civilian to navy life overwhelmed Bishop. In Nuts to Butts, he narrates excerpts of his twenty-two-year career from basic training to retirement. In this memoir, Bishop tells of meeting a wide assortment of people and the problems they brought with them. He shares the good and not-so-good times of serving in the fleet, including dealing with the loss of privacy, becoming a team member, and keeping US warships in mission-ready condition and the crews in shape to play the mental games required in an examination- and deployment-laden schedule. Nuts to Butts describes living through basic training, working in the scullery of an aircraft carrier, serving duty as shore patrol, visiting exotic ports of call for liberty, climbing a plateau with shear vertical sides in Sri Lanka, living on the naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, and making night dives among the sharks. Bishop provides keen insight into the life of a sailor, delivered with humor. He not only fondly remembers his service, but preserves the stories for all.

Book Bishops Bourbons and Big Mules

Download or read book Bishops Bourbons and Big Mules written by J. Barry Vaughn and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of how the Episcopal Church gained influence over Alabama’s cultural, political, and economic arenas despite being a denominational minority in the state The consensus of southern historians is that, since the Second Great Awakening, evangelicalism has dominated the South. This is certainly true when one considers the extent to which southern culture is dominated by evangelical rhetoric and ideas. However, in Alabama one non-evangelical group has played a significant role in shaping the state’s history. J. Barry Vaughn explains that, although the Episcopal Church has always been a small fraction (around 1 percent) of Alabama’s population, an inordinately high proportion, close to 10 percent, of Alabama’s significant leaders have belonged to this denomination. Many of these leaders came to the Episcopal Church from other denominations because they were attracted to the church’s wide degree of doctrinal latitude and laissez-faire attitude toward human frailty. Vaughn argues that the church was able to attract many of the state’s governors, congressmen, and legislators by positioning itself as the church of conservative political elites in the state--the planters before the Civil War, the “Bourbons” after the Civil War, and the “Big Mules” during industrialization. He begins this narrative by explaining how Anglicanism came to Alabama and then highlights how Episcopal bishops and congregation members alike took active roles in key historic movements including the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules closes with Vaughn’s own predictions about the fate of the Episcopal Church in twenty-first-century Alabama.

Book The Church s Other Half

Download or read book The Church s Other Half written by Trevor Beeson and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have always constituted at least half of the church’s membership, but for almost 2,000 years were excluded from any significant part in its leadership. After the example of Jesus, the earliest Christian communities were wholly inclusive in their organisation, but a patriarchal model derived from the pattern of the secular Greco-Roman societies was soon adopted. This restricted women to subordinate roles from which the struggle to escape continues.

Book excerpt: There has been no serious study of Anglican bishops since Kenneth Kirk published Apostolic Ministry in 1946. This new book goes straight back to the New Testament and the Early Church to discover the little-known origins of episcopal ministry and how it came to Britain through the efforts of first the Celtic and then the Roman Church. Increasing politicisation by William the Conqueror and his successors is examined in depth, as is Cranmer's rediscovery of its essentially teaching and pastoral functions of the episcopate at the Reformation. Lancelot Andrewes's career is spotlighted to find the true qualities of the classic 17th century Anglican bishop before he declined into the political hack and social climber of the 18th century. A chapter on the 19th century shows how Queen Victoria, her entourage, her Prime Ministers and her Archbishops of Canterbury all played lively parts in the appointment of new bishops, with considerable tussles frequently occurring between them. The history can be truly absorbing! A statistical analysis reveals how the English episcopate has changed in the century between 1905 and 2005, noting that while the educational backgrounds of bishops have not altered greatly, with Oxbridge still a major influence, their social backgrounds and ecclesiastical careers now tend to follow a different path. Has this produced a better episcopate? The episcopal histories of the Church in Wales and the Scottish Episcopal Church get a chapter each, which include a close-up of their contrasting methods for appointing bishops and the resulting difference in atmosphere between these two bodies. The Scottish chapter shows how the Episcopalians' democratic electoral system travelled to the USA at the end of the 18th century and subsequently influenced the episcopal organisation of nearly all newer branches of the Anglican Communion. A chapter on changing thinking about episcopacy in the Church of England and elsewhere reveals several trends, including moves towards collegial decision-making and a decline in emphasis upon the teaching and pastoral functions. There is also a review of the growing phenomenon of extra-mural Anglicanism brought into being in the aftermath of ordaining women priests and adopting a less rigorous attitude towards marriage and other sexual matters. The results of a major statistical survey on the attitudes of clergy and laity and recently retired bishops towards the episcopate and its responsibilities are presented in detail. The dioceses surveyed were Bradford, Leicester, Monmouth and Edinburgh. These results highlight the huge pressures and varied calls upon a bishop's time, including his relationship with his parishes, attendance at the House of Lords, diocesan administration and clergy discipline. Are bishops on a hiding to nowhere? The final chapter expands upon the lessons to be learnt from both the historical analysis and the results of the statistical survey, asking whether the existing episcopate is adequate to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. Practical solutions are offered, which will stimulate action to promote the faith of Christ in an increasingly difficult religious, political, social and economic environment. A suggestion is also made to help create a Church where both those for and against women priests can co-exist and flourish in their work without either side suffering offence or marginalisation. Unfortunately bishops are an embarrassing subject for clergy and laity to discuss, which is why they have been so little researched and so infrequently written about. They are important people and wield great power. For their own sakes and for the sake of the Church their role must be discussed sympathetically but realistically. This important book should help start the process.
