Download or read book Bishop Pierce s Sermons and Addresses written by Atticus G. Haygood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bishop Pierce's Sermons and Addresses: With a Few Special Discourses by Dr. Pierce If there is any difference in the indications of these brief mem oranda of his preaching, it is that after he became Bishop he was more intensely. Practical and evangelical in his ministry. One month during the thirty years he seems to have been silent. It was in 1859. He had started to California by the overland route I find the record thus: New Orleans, April 25; Shreveport, May 1 Rusk, May'4; San Marcos, May 14, 15; Stringtown, May 15 (three sermons that Sunday); San Antonio, May 19; Uvalde, May 21; San Francisco, June 19 - morning and evening. October 10 he preached at Los Angeles - between San Francisco and Los Angeles preaching fifty times. The record is not complete - being most imperfect in 1860 and 1861. The storm was gathering and breaking, and his long habit of jotting down his texts, places, and times for awhile lost its hold upon him.' There are only eight sermons noted in 1861, and they were all preached in Hancock county. For 1862 the record appears to be nearly complete. Book New Directions in American Religious History

Download or read book New Directions in American Religious History written by Harry S. Stout and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteen essays collected in this book originate from a conference of the same title, held at the Wingspread Conference Center in October of 1993. Leading scholars were invited to reflect on their specialties in American religious history in ways that summarized both where the field is and where it ought to move in the decades to come. The essays are organized according to four general themes: places and regions, universal themes, transformative events, and marginal groups and ethnocultural "outsiders." They address a wide range of specific topics including Puritanism, Protestantism and economic behavior, gender and sexuality in American Protestantism, and the twentieth-century de-Christianization of American public culture. Among the contributors are such distinguished scholars as David D. Hall, Donald G. Matthews, Allen C. Guelzo, Gordon S. Wood, Daniel Walker Howe, Robert Wuthnow, Jon Butler, David A. Hollinger, Harry S. Stout, and John Higham. Taken together, these essays reveal a rapidly expanding field of study that is breaking out of its traditional confines and spilling into all of American history. The book takes the measure of the changes of the last quarter-century and charts numerous challenges to future work.

Book The Sacred Flame of Love

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher H. Owen
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780820319636
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The Sacred Flame of Love written by Christopher H. Owen and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempting to restore subtlety and nuance to the study of southern religion, The Sacred Flame of Love ranges across the entire nineteenth century to chronicle the evolution of the institutions, theology, and social attitudes of Georgia Methodists in light of such phenomena, trends, and events as slavery, class prejudice, republicanism, population growth, economic development, sectional politics, war, emancipation, and urban growth. In connecting Methodist history with the larger social transformation of nineteenth-century Georgia, Christopher H. Owen uncovers a story of considerable complexity and variety. Because Georgia Methodists included people from every social class, few generalizations apply properly to all of them. For many years they were loosely united by common adherence to the ideals of Wesleyan evangelicalism, but economic and political developments would gradually accentuate Methodist social divisions and weaken even this bond. Indeed, deviating far from the conception of unchanging and asocial southern religion often held by scholars, Owen sees both church and society undergoing enormous change in the nineteenth century.

Book Early Tales Sketches Vol 2

Download or read book Early Tales Sketches Vol 2 written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1981-07-27 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: The second volume of this collection follows Clemens from his first days as a resident journalist in California, late in May 1864, through the end of his first full year as a California resident, 1865. In this twenty-month period he wrote most of his work for the San Francisco Golden Era, the Morning Call, the Dramatic Chronicle, and the Californian. He began to publish somewhat more regularly in eastern journals, like the New York Saturday Press and the Weekly Review, and toward the end of the period he started a long assignment as the daily correspondent from San Francisco to the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In November 1865 he published "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" [no. 119] and by the beginning of 1866 the news of its success with eastern readers had begun to filter back to California. He was on the verge of national and international fame as a humorist.

Book The Mind of the Master Class

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Fox-Genovese
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2005-10-17
  • ISBN : 1139446568
  • Pages : 843 pages

Download or read book The Mind of the Master Class written by Elizabeth Fox-Genovese and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-17 with total page 843 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mind of the Master Class tells of America's greatest historical tragedy. It presents the slaveholders as men and women, a great many of whom were intelligent, honorable, and pious. It asks how people who were admirable in so many ways could have presided over a social system that proved itself an enormity and inflicted horrors on their slaves. The South had formidable proslavery intellectuals who participated fully in transatlantic debates and boldly challenged an ascendant capitalist ('free-labor') society. Blending classical and Christian traditions, they forged a moral and political philosophy designed to sustain conservative principles in history, political economy, social theory, and theology, while translating them into political action. Even those who judge their way of life most harshly have much to learn from their probing moral and political reflections on their times - and ours - beginning with the virtues and failings of their own society and culture.
