Book Hieratikon a Treasure of Orthodox Culture and Spirituality

Download or read book Hieratikon a Treasure of Orthodox Culture and Spirituality written by Lucian Petroaia and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctoral thesis about Hieratikon of priest Lucian Petroaia brings to the researchers’ attention, the most important book of service of the orthodox priest. From a historical perspective, the author has carefully identified and investigated all editions of the Hieratikon printed in Romania, from 1508 to the present; from the point of view of analyzing the content of the Hieratikon, he follows the evolution of the order of the Holly Liturgy over 500 years, often comparing the text of the Romanian Hieratikon with that of the Greek Hieratikon and the Slavic Slujebnik. The interdisciplinary approach emphasizes the essential role that the Orthodox liturgical cult had for the assertion of Romanian culture, in the landscape of the European and Universal culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Theology of Participation

Download or read book Theology of Participation written by Daniel G. Oprean and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists in Romania have developed a practice of suspicion when it comes to religious dialogue, especially with the Romanian Orthodox tradition, due to a history that is characterized by oppression. In this detailed study Dr Daniel Oprean paves the way for positive dialogue between the two traditions, highlighting that much can be gained and learned by acknowledging similarities and differences in key aspects of theology. Dr Oprean explores how existing theological resources can be used to enhance theological discourse between Baptist and Orthodox traditions in Romania through in-depth analysis of the thought of British Baptist theologian, Professor Paul Fiddes, and Romanian Orthodox theologian, Father Dumitru Stăniloae. Oprean in particular looks at their understanding of trinitarian and human participation through perichoresis, the Eucharist, Christian spirituality, and baptism and chrismation. Presented as a conversation between the two traditions this study is a model for how theological and religious dialogue can facilitate reconciliation, not just in the church but also in wider society.

Book Church Reckoning with Communism in Post 1989 Romania

Download or read book Church Reckoning with Communism in Post 1989 Romania written by Lucian Turcescu and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume focuses on the relationship with Communism of Romania's most important religious denominations and their attempt to cope with that difficult past which continues to cast an important shadow over their present. For the first time ever, this volume considers both the majority Romanian Orthodox Church and significant minority denominations such as the Roman and Greek Catholic Churches, the Reformed Church, the Hungarian Unitarian Church, and the Pentecostal Christian Denomination. It argues that no religious group escaped collaboration with the Communists. After 1989, however, most denominations had little desire to tackle their tainted past and make a clean start. In part, this situation was facilitated by the country's deficient legislation that did not encourage the pursuit of lustration, which in turn did not lead to a serious movement of elite renewal in the religious realm. Instead, a strong process of reproduction of the old elites and their adaptation to democracy has been the dominant characteristic of the post-Communist period.

Book Bucharest Tourist Guide Ghid turistic Bucure ti

Download or read book Bucharest Tourist Guide Ghid turistic Bucure ti written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2015-11-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual English/Romanian Guide (Ghid bilingv engleză/română) Bucharest offers some excellent attractions, and during the recent years has cultivated a sophisticated, trendy, and modern sensibility that many have come to expect from a European capital. Perhaps the most prominent landmark is the Palace of the Parliament, built in the 1980s during the reign of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. The largest Parliament building in the world, the Palace houses the Romanian Parliament (the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate), as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art. The building boasts one of the largest convention centres in the world. Culture in Bucharest, included within the whole Romanian culture, is a unique culture, which is the product of its geography and its distinct historical evolution. Romanians, (Proto-Romanians, including Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, and Istro-Romanians) are the descendants of the ancient people indigenous to the Balkans, but have been Romanized. Bucharest has a growing cultural scene, in fields including the visual arts, performing arts and nightlife. Unlike other parts of Romania, such as the Black Sea coast or Transylvania, Bucharest's cultural scene has no defined style, and instead incorporates elements of Romanian and international culture.

Book Religion and Politics in Post Communist Romania

Download or read book Religion and Politics in Post Communist Romania written by Lavinia Stan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-communist era it has become evident that the emerging democracies in Eastern Europe will be determined by many factors, only some of them political. Throughout the region, the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Greek Catholic churches have tried to impose their views on democracy through direct political engagement. Moreover, surveys show that the churches (and the army) enjoy more popular confidence than elected political bodies such as parliaments. These results reflect widespread disenchantment with a democratization process that has allowed politicians to advance their own agendas rather than work to solve the urgent socio-economic problems these countries face. In this penetrating study, Lavinia Stan and Lucian Turcescu investigate the interaction of religion and politics in one such country, Romania. Facing internal challenges and external competitions from other religions old and new, the Orthodox Church in Romania has sought to consolidate its position and ensure Romania's version of democracy recognizes its privileged position of "national Church", enforcing the Church's stances on issues such as homosexuality and abortion. The post-communist state and political elite in turn rely on the Church for compliance with educational and cultural policies and to quell the insistent demands of the Hungarian minority for autonomy. Stan and Turcescu examine the complex relationship between church and state in this new Romania, providing analysis in key areas: church collaboration with communist authorities, post-communist electoral politics, nationalism and ethno-politics, restitution of Greek Catholic property, religious education, and sexual behavior and reproduction. As the first scholars to be given access to confidential materials from the archives of the communist political police, the notorious Securitate, Stan and Turcescu also examine church archives, legislation, news reports, and interviews with politicians and church leaders. This study will move the debate from common analyses of nationalism in isolation to more comprehensive investigations which consider the impact of religious actors on a multitude of other issues relevant to the political and social life of the country.

Book Christianity and Modernity in Eastern Europe

Download or read book Christianity and Modernity in Eastern Europe written by Bruce R. Berglund and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disgraceful collusion. Heroic resistance. Suppression of faith. Perseverance of convictions. The story of Christianity in twentieth-century Eastern Europe is often told in stark scenes of tragedy and triumph. Overlooked in the retelling of these dramas is how the region's clergy and lay believers lived their faith, acted within religious and political institutions, and adapted their traditions---while struggling to make sense of a changing world. The contributors to this volume, coming from the U.S. and Western and Eastern Europe, look beyond the narratives of resistance and collaboration. They offer surprising new evidence from archives and oral history interviews, and they provide fresh interpretations of Christianity as it was lived and expressed in modern Europe: from religiosity in the industrial cities of the late nineteenth century to current debates over immigration and European identity; from theological debates in East Germany to folk healing in post-socialist Bulgaria; and, counter-intuitively, from religious fervor among the Czechs to indifference among the Poles. Addressing Christianity in diverse forms---Orthodox, Protestant, Roman and Greek Catholic---as an integral part of the region's politics, society, and culture, this collection is a major addition to studies of both Eastern Europe and religion in the twentieth century. "A volume that specialists in the history of Christianity in other regions of the world will read with great interest, and a degree of envy. As an historian of religion in Western Europe, I can say that although there is a vast literature on the religious history of the nineteenth century and a growing literature on the twentieth century, there is nothing quite like this." From the Foreword by Hugh McLeod, author of The Religious Crisis of the 1960s. "This is a path-breaking book in two different ways. It contributes to the re-evaluation of the nature of modern European religion generally, and to the nature of religion in the modern world." Jeffrey Cox, University of Iowa, author of Imperial Fault Lines: Christianity and Colonial Power in India.

  • Pages : 491 pages

Download or read book Dracula written by Matei Cazacu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in French in 2004, Matei Cazacu’s Dracula remains the most authoritative scholarly biography of the Wallachian prince Vlad III the Impaler (1448, 1456-1462, 1476). Its core is an exhaustively researched reconstruction of Dracula’s life and political career, using original sources in more than nine languages. In addition Cazacu traces Dracula’s metamorphosis, at the hands of contemporary propagandists, into variously a bloodthirsty tyrant, and an early modern “great sovereign.” Beyond this Cazacu explores Dracula’s transformation into “the vampire prince” in literature, film and folklore, with surprising new discoveries on Bram Stoker’s sources for his novel. In this first English translation, the text and bibliography are updated, and readers are provided with an appendix of the key sources for Dracula’s life, in fresh and accurate English translations.

Book Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity in a Global Context

Download or read book Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity in a Global Context written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity constitutes an exceptional religious tradition flourishing in sub-Saharan Africa already since late antiquity. The volume places Ethiopian Orthodoxy into a global context and explores the various ways in which it has been interconnected with the wider Christian world from the Aksumite period until today. By highlighting the formative role of both wide-ranging translocal religious interactions as well as disruptions thereof, the contributors challenge the perception of this African Christian tradition as being largely isolated in the course of its history. Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity in a Global Context: Entanglements and Disconnections offers a new perspective on the Horn of Africa’s Christian past and reclaims its place on the map of global Christianity.
