Then there’s twelve-year-old goblin-witch Beetle, who’s caught in between. She’d rather skip being homeschooled completely and spend time with her best friend, Blob Glost. But the mall is getting boring, and B.G. is cursed to haunt it, tethered there by some unseen force. And now Beetle’s old best friend, Kat, is back in town for a sorcery apprenticeship with her Aunt Hollowbone. Kat is everything Beetle wants to be: beautiful, cool, great at magic, and kind of famous online. Beetle’s quickly being left in the dust. But Kat’s mentor has set her own vile scheme in motion. If Blob Ghost doesn’t escape the mall soon, their afterlife might be coming to a very sticky end. Now, Beetle has less than a week to rescue her best ghost, encourage Kat to stand up for herself, and confront the magic she’s been avoiding for far too long. Download or read book Dance of the Dung Beetles written by Helen Lunn and published by Wits University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sweeping scientific and social history of the humble dung beetle The humble and industrious dung beetle is a marvelous beast: the 6,000 species identified so far are intricately entwined with human history and scientific endeavor. These night-soil collectors of the planet have been worshipped as gods, worn as jewelry, and painted by artists. More practically, they saved Hawaii from ecological blight, and rescued Australia from plagues of flies. They fertilize soil, cleanse pastures, steer by the stars, and have a unique relationship with the African elephant (along with many other ungulates). Above all, they are the ideal subject for biological study in an evolving world. In this sweeping history of more than 3,000 years, beginning with Ancient Egypt, scientist Marcus Byrne and writer Helen Lunn capture the diversity of dung beetles and their unique behavior patterns. Dung beetles’ fortunes have followed the shifts from a world dominated by a religion that symbolically incorporated them into some of its key concepts of rebirth, to a world in which science has largely separated itself from religion and alchemy. With over 6,000 species found throughout the world, these unassuming but remarkable creatures are fundamental to some of humanity’s most cherished beliefs and have been ever present in religion, art, literature, science and the environment. They are at the center of current gene research, play an important role in keeping our planet healthy, and some nocturnal dung beetles have been found to navigate by the starry skies. Outlining the development of science from the point of view of the humble dung beetle is what makes this charming story of immense interest to general readers and entomologists alike.

Book Forest Insects

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Forest Insects written by Alan A. Berryman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a general text for undergraduates studying the manage ment of forest insect pests. It is divided into four parts: insects, ecology, manage ment, and practice. Part I, Insects, contains two chapters. The first is intended to provide an overview of the general attributes of insects. Recognizing that it is impossible to adequately treat such a diverse and complex group of organisms in such a short space, I have attempted to highlight those insectan characteristics that make them difficult animals to combat. I have also tried to expose the insects' weak points, those attributes that make them vulnerable to manipulation by human actions. Even so, this first chapter will seem inadequate and sketchy to many of my colleagues. Ideally, this book should be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual covering insect anatomy, physiology, biology, behavior, and classifica tion in much greater depth-in fact, this is how I organize my forest entomology course. It is hoped that this first chapter will provide nonentomologists with a general feel for the insects and with a broad understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, while Chapter 2 will provide a brief overview of the diverse insect fauna that attacks the various parts of forest trees and their products.

Book Dami n Ortega Supervivencia de la Idea Fracaso Del Objeto

Download or read book Dami n Ortega Supervivencia de la Idea Fracaso Del Objeto written by Damián Ortega and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican artist Damián Ortega loves to dissemble iconic consumer goods--Coke bottles, Volkswagen Beetles, even tortilla chips--and recombine their parts to produce refreshing sculptural perspectives on their cultural meaning and function. For this book he has put together a selection of drawings, made between 1991 and 2007, that were created to plot these sculptures and their installations. Ortega, who was once a political cartoonist, retains in his drawings an open-endedness that invites the viewer to imagine the work's possible applications. The book's title, Supervivencia de la Idea (Survival of the Idea), refers to its partial status as an archive of ideas--some of which have already been executed, others of which await realization, as with Ortega's recent mobile obelisk for New York's Central Park. Damián Ortega was born in 1967 in Mexico City and currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He has had solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2005), Tate Modern, London (2005) and Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2002), among others.
