Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birth, Death & InBetween came to Ms Corwin as a title when friends began to die. Her generation was ‘starting to go’. “A collection comes about at a turning point; one is grieved, one wonders at the disappearance, the invisibility, the untimeliness, what was before, what may come after. No longer a matter of death and dying, but of birth, death and the in between. The speechlessness turns into a need to speak. You don’t put together a collection of poetry overnight. There is no arbitrary subject. There are threads. A collection is a matter of emphasis, accentuation and priority. One’s generation begins to go; the whole of the sidewalk full of people coming at you will be gone in a hundred years, not a person coming at you left. If that is not a source of wonderment, what is?” Birth, Death & InBetween is a collection of 300 some odd poems written over a period of 40 years observing, examining, questioning, accepting the plain facts and the elusive nuances.

Download or read book The Point Is written by Lee Eisenberg and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging and provocative book, Lee Eisenberg, bestselling author of The Number, dares to tackle nothing less than what it takes to find enduring meaning and purpose in life. He explains how from a young age, each of us is compelled to take memories of events and relationships and shape them into a one-of-a-kind personal narrative. In addition to sharing his own pivotal memories (some of them moving, some just a shade embarrassing), Eisenberg presents striking research culled from psychology and neuroscience, and draws on insights from a pantheon of thinkers and great writers-Tolstoy, Freud, Joseph Campbell, Virginia Woolf, among others. We also hear from men and women of all ages who are wrestling with the demands of work and family, ever in search of fulfillment and satisfaction. It all adds up to a fascinating story, delightfully told, one that goes straight to the heart of how we explain ourselves to ourselves-in other words, who we are and why.

Book A Bit Different

  • Author : Pauline Conroy
  • Publisher : Orpen Press
  • Release : 2018-11-22

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book A Bit Different written by Pauline Conroy and published by Orpen Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bit Different: Disability in Ireland brings the reader on a journey exploring the ideas that influence our thinking about people with disabilities. In the year when Ireland ratified the UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities, A Bit Different answers the question as to why the road to equal rights for people with disabilities is strewn with so many potholes. Its chapters analyse the impact of the Nazi programme to annihilate people with disabilities and create an ‘Aryan race,’ as well as the Irish habit of placing people with perceived differences into closed institutions. Drawing on examples from Germany, Romania, Italy and the US, the book casts a different or alternative light on the Army Deafness cases of the 1970s and the more recent Tuam discovery of unburied babies. Among its ten chapters, the author provides a new look at the rise of the independent living movement in Ireland among people with disabilities themselves and provides a critical appraisal of the increasing State regulation and enforcement of standards of living in residential centres for people with disabilities. Students of Disability Studies will find the first historical timeline of disability policy events over two centuries, especially useful in understanding the history of disability rights in Ireland. The intended readership for this book is among the 600,000 Irish people who describe themselves as having a disability or long-standing health condition, their friends, families, advocates, carers, social care supporters, work colleagues and employers.

Book Birth Death and Religious Faith in an English Dissenting Community

Download or read book Birth Death and Religious Faith in an English Dissenting Community written by Albion M. Urdank and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study lies at the intersection of three principal areas of social history: demography, religion, and quantitative methods. It is a microanalysis of an English population at the level of the Anglican parish, during the era of the evangelical revival, which includes, unusually, Protestant dissenters from the Established church, in this case Particular Baptists, who were moderate Calvinists. It goes a step beyond previous studies by giving Anglicans and Dissenters co-equal status in a comparative demographic analysis and by demonstrating how religious values informed procreative activity. It does so through a combination of advanced statistical methodologies and an innovative treatment of data collection forms as readable texts. The study concludes that the likelihood of another birth increased following a religious conversion experience, especially among both Anglican and Baptist wives following marriage. Mortality too had a less constraining effect on procreative activity which, in conformity with the English experience, was driven largely by fertility.

Book Local Area Network Interconnection

Download or read book Local Area Network Interconnection written by Raif O. Onvural and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many exciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in fast packet switching, multi media services, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and high-speed protocols. It seems fair to say that the face of networking has been rapidly changing and the distinction between LANs, MANs, and WANs is becoming more and more blurred. It is commonly believed in the industry that ATM represents the next generation in networking. The adoption of ATM standards by the research and development community as a unifying technology for communications that scales from local to wide area has been met with great enthusiasm from the business community and end users. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the First International Conference on LAN Interconnection consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and state of the art reviews. We are fortunate to have assembled a strong program committee, expert speakers, and panelists. We would like to thank Professor Schwartz for his keynote speech. We would like to thank Professor Yannis Viniotis and his students for the preparation of the index. We gratefully acknowledge the generous financial support of Dr. Jon Fjeld, Mr. Rick McGee, and Mr. David Witt, all of IBM-Research Triangle Park. We also would like to thank Ms. Mary Safford, our editor, and Mr. John Matzka, both at Plenum Press, for the publication of the proceedings.

Download or read book Journey with Me written by Marlene Libby and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey with Me: Getting to Know God is an invitation to do just that. These writings are a compilation of articles and portions of a blog written by the author's late husband, William H. Libby, PhD, organic chemistry, fondly referred to as "Bill." With the author's encouragement, he had contacted this publisher about possibly publishing some articles. Unfortunately, a month later he entered a hospice program and was unable to pursue it further. Upon Bill's death, the author decided to display samples of his work at his memorial service. Receiving so much interest from family, friends, and clergy, the author decided to put together a manuscript of some of his works as a legacy to Bill. I believe you will find Journey with Me: Getting to Know God entertaining and educational. Bill had a way of relating to all ages and diverse backgrounds as you will experience in reading his book. Part 2 of the book is devoted to a comparison of science and religion. In going through this process, his faith in his Christian God is even more strengthened.

Book A Generation of Change

Download or read book A Generation of Change written by Jacob S. Siegel and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1993-02-18 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Generation of Change is an exceptional study of the nation's elderly, a population that has undergone profound changes in the years since World War II. As modern medicine extends the average life span and the baby boom generation begins to approach middle age, the number of older Americans is expected to more than double in the next century. Currently, 75 percent of U.S. health care expenditures go toward the elderly. But as national trends toward early retirement and low birthrate continue, an aging American population could face crises in meeting their financial and physical needs. According to Jacob S. Siegel in A Generation of Change, astute public planning must be informed by an understanding of the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the older population, as it is today and as it will be in the coming years. Siegel employs census and survey data from 1950 through the mid-1980s to describe a population constantly shifting in its ethnic and gender composition, geographic distribution, marital and living arrangements, health, employment, and economic status. Surprisingly, there is tremendous disparity in the quality of life among the elderly. Although their average poverty rate is below that of the general population, there are dramatic levels of poverty among older women, who are far more likely than men to live alone or in institutions. As the elderly progress from the "young old" to the "aged old"—those over 85—sharp differences emerge as income and employment decrease and degrees of chronic illness increase. In addition, residential location influences the quality of health care and public assistance available to the elderly, an effect that may account for the marked migration of older people to Florida and Arizona. Siegel analyzes the full range of characteristics for this heterogenous population and, through comparisons with other age groups as well as with the elderly of the previous decades, portrays the crucial influence of social and economic conditions over the life course on the quality of later life. With our elderly population growing more numerous and long lived, accurate information about them is increasingly essential. A Generation of Change will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers seeking more effective solutions in critical areas such as housing, long-term health care, and the funding of Social Security and retirement programs. Book Evo SETI

    Book Details:
  • Author : Claudio Maccone
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-02-26
  • ISBN : 3030519317
  • Pages : 878 pages

Download or read book Evo SETI written by Claudio Maccone and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a vision of how evolutionary life processes can be modelled. It presents a mathematical description that can be used not only for the full evolution of life on Earth from RNA to modern human societies, but also the possible evolution of life on exoplanets, thus leading to SETI, the current Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. The main premise underlying this mathematical theory is that the Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) can be applied as a key stochastic process to model the evolution of life. In the resulting Evo-SETI Theory, the life of any living thing (a cell, an animal, a human, a civilization of humans, or even an ET civilization) is represented by a b-lognormal, i.e., a lognormal probability density function starting at a precise instant (b, birth) then increasing up to a peak time, then decreasing to senility time and then continuing as a straight line down to the time of death. Using this theory, Claudio Maccone arrives at remarkable hypotheses on the development of life and civilizations, the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and when computers will take over the reins from us humans (Singularity). The book develops the mathematical Evo-SETI Theory by integrating a set of articles that the author has published in various journals on Astrobiology and Astronautical Research.
