Through her story we discover a society that blended native Alutiiq culture with the Russian Orthodox teachings handed down from late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century colonists; the mixed modern education and employment with a subsistence lifestyle; that sanctioned arranged marriages but upheld civil divorce laws; and, above all, that recovered its confidence in traditional healing - both of the body and of the community.".

Book The Nine Steps

Download or read book The Nine Steps written by Anne Givaudan and published by Editions SOIS. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After looking into the world of the afterlife for a long time, Anne Givaudan and Daniel Meurois were able to focus their attention on what might be called the world of "pre-birth". Using their familiar method of projecting consciousness, for the nine months which make up a pregnancy, they followed the path of Rebecca, a soul preparing to take on a body of flesh. Day after day, week after week, they faithfully recorded how the being to be incarnated went through many metamorphoses. Like a documentary article, their testimony retraces the various psychic and physical changes which everyone undergoes in the womb and the worlds which lead to it. This is a new way of looking at foetal life and the process of reincarnation. Written in a simple, direct style, the originality and amount of information the book offers make it a work that does not just speak to those who are to give birth to a child, or have already done so, but also all those for whom life is an everlasting source of wonder.

Does our life, the things that happen to us, and our death, have any meaning? What do Hinduism, Buddhism, and samsara tell us about suffering, life and death? Could spiritual dimensions exist or do we live in a purely material universe? What is consciousness and does it die when our bodies die? Are rebirth or reincarnation even possible? Can we have spirituality without religion? What, if anything, might spirituality or religion mean in a turbulent and unpredictable twenty-first century? Do mysticism, psychedelics, science and quantum physics offer clues to any of these questions? Take a journey with the author through the fascinating cultures of Nepal, India, Bali and Cambodia and explore their rich traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism and samsara. Part exploration of spirituality and religion, part travel adventure to places of astonishing diversity, this book will get you thinking about your own beliefs, life and death, and where those might fit in to a bigger picture.

From the moment Martha and her husband, John, accidentally conceived their second child, all hell broke loose. They were a couple obsessed with success. After years of matching IQs and test scores with less driven peers, they had two Harvard degrees apiece and were gunning for more. They’d plotted out a future in the most vaunted ivory tower of academe. But when their unborn son, Adam, was diagnosed with Down syndrome, doctors, advisers, and friends in the Harvard community warned them that if they decided to keep the baby, they would lose all hope of achieving their carefully crafted goals. Fortunately, that’s exactly what happened. By the time Adam was born, Martha and John were propelled into a world in which they were forced to redefine everything of value to them, put all their faith in miracles, and trust that they could fly without a net. And it worked. Expecting Adam captures the abject terror and exhilarating freedom of facing impending parenthood, being forced to question one’s deepest beliefs, and rewriting life’s rules.

Book Afrofuturism in Black Panther

Download or read book Afrofuturism in Black Panther written by Karen A. Ritzenhoff and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Afrofuturism in Black Panther: Gender, Identity, and the Re-making of Blackness, through an interdisciplinary and intersectional analysis of Black Panther, discusses the importance of superheroes and the ways in which they are especially important to Black fans. Aside from its global box office success, Black Panther paves the way for future superhero narratives due to its underlying philosophy to base the story on a narrative that is reliant on Afro-futurism. The film’s storyline, the book posits, leads viewers to think about relevant real-world social questions as it taps into the cultural zeitgeist in an indelible way. Contributors to this collection approach Black Panther not only as a film, but also as Afrofuturist imaginings of an African nation untouched by colonialism and antiblack racism: the film is a map to alternate states of being, an introduction to the African Diaspora, a treatise on liberation and racial justice, and an examination of identity. As they analyze each of these components, contributors pose the question: how can a film invite a reimagining of Blackness?

Book Nietzsche A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Nietzsche A Very Short Introduction written by Michael Tanner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-10-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was almost wholly neglected during his sane life, which came to an abrupt end in 1889. Since then he has been appropriated as an icon by an astonishingly diverse spectrum of people, whose interpretations of his thought range from the highly irrational to the firmly analytical. Thus Spoke Zarathustra introduced the 'superman' and The Twilight of the Idols developed the 'Will to Power' concept; these term, together with 'Sklavenmoral' and 'Herrenmoral', became confused with the rise of nationalism in Germany. Idiosyncratic and aphoristic, Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner's readable introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings. It also explodes the many misconceptions fostered in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote, prophetically: 'Do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!' ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Download or read book Oakhurst written by Paula DiPerna and published by Walker. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Golf formally came to America in 1884. Russell Montague—a thirty-two-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer—had moved to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, to improve his health. His Scottish neighbors, George Grant and Alexander and Roderick MacLeod, were also men of leisure. When Grant’s golf-obsessed nephew Lionel Torin arrived from Ceylon, these five built, purely for their own pleasure, a nine-hole course on Montague’s land—unaware that it was the first course in the United States, and tenuously launching what has arguably become America’s most popular sport. Oakhurst tells the memorable story of this historic course, from its birth and brief first life of fifteen years to its miraculous restoration 110 years later. Weaving the lives of the founders through a fascinating history of golf, the evolution of its equipment, and the genesis of course design, Paula DiPerna and Vikki Keller recount colorful stories of early matches that astonished local residents, who thought the founders mad: “It may be a fine game for a canny Scotchman, but no American will ever play it except Montague,” one opined. Some sixty years after Oakhurst had fallen into neglect, legendary local golfer Sam Snead gave it new life, convincing his friend Lewis Keller to buy the land. Their dream of restoring the course was realized in 1994, when Keller and noted golf architect Bob Cupp—relying on scant clues, and intuition—unearthed the dormant holes one by one. As Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, and many others who have played the course discovered, only period equipment (hickory-shafted clubs, gutta-percha balls) is allowed, and nineteenth-century rules prevail—making Oakhurst the only place in America where anyone can experience the game as it was first played. It is an important chapter in sports history, a nostalgic piece of Americana, and Oakhurst brings its magic alive.

Book Reincarnation The cycle of birth death and rebirth in Hinduism

Download or read book Reincarnation The cycle of birth death and rebirth in Hinduism written by Yevgeniya Marmer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Theology - Hinduism, grade: 2,1, University of Hildesheim, language: English, abstract: The following paper will deal with the concept of the cycle of birth, death and rebirth in the Hindu religion, as Hindus, in contrary to the Western cultures and monotheistic religions, believe that there is life after death, and before the present life, there was a beforelife because they believe that it does not make sense that people suddenly appear from nowhere, meaning not the biological body, but the “soul” or the “spirit”. First, a definition of the different concepts of afterlife in different metaphysical models and of the term reincarnation from its semantic point of view and, how it is defined in other religions, will be given. Furthermore, Hinduism, itself, will be introduced, as it is important to understand the essence of this religion to be able to understand the concept of reincarnation. Additionally, the concept of reincarnation will be described. That includes the processes of birth, death and rebirth. Finally, the arguments in favor and against the theory of reincarnation will be discussed. The question, about what happens after death, is a philosophical one, which has been worrying humanity for centuries. By trying to categorize the different concepts, regarding what happens after death, three concepts, varying among cultures and religions, can be differentiated. First, there is the concept of denial which states that the existence of the individual ends with their death, as it is widely believed in the Western world. The second one is the concept of completion - in many religions, as, for example, in Christianity, the human life is seen as a preparation for a life after, somewhere else, in a different state of existence, like Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, Limbus, etc. And the third concept is the concept of rebirth, meaning that the mental part of the person, may it be called the “soul” or the “spirit”, is reborn many times in new bodies on earth.
