Book Bringing Home the Birkin

Download or read book Bringing Home the Birkin written by Michael Tonello and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider's hilarious, whirlwind account of his years spent globe-trotting in search of the holy grail of handbags: the Birkin For more than twenty years, the Hermès Birkin bag has been the iconic symbol of fashion, luxury, and wealth. Though the bag is often seen dangling from the arms of celebrities, there is a fabled waiting list of more than two years to buy one from Hermès, and the average fashionista has a better chance of climbing Mount Everest in Prada pumps than of possessing one of these coveted carryalls. Unless, of course, she happens to know Michael Tonello . . . Michael's newfound career started with an impulsive move to Barcelona, a vanished job assignment, no work visa, and an Hermès scarf sold on eBay to generate some quick cash. But soon the resourceful Michael discovered the truth about the waiting list and figured out the secret to getting Hermès to part with one of these precious bags. Millions of dollars worth of Birkins later, Michael had become one of eBay's most successful entrepreneurs—and a Robin Hood to thousands of desperate rich women. With down-to-earth wit, Michael chronicles the unusual ventures that took him to nearly every continent, from eBay to Paris auction house and into the lives of celebrities and poseurs. Flirting with danger, Michael recounts the heady rush of hand delivering his first big score to famed songwriter Carole Bayer Sager in Paris; how he had to hire thugs to rescue a bag that one of his "shoppers" held for ransom; and the story of the Oscar-worthy performances that allowed him to snag "reserved" bags from other, less dogged Birkin seekers. Whether he's relating his wining and dining, buying and selling, dodging and weaving, laughing and crying, or schmoozing and stammering, Michael is a master raconteur who weaves together tales of hunting Birkins in the world's most posh locales, memories of meals that would make any gastronome salivate, anecdotes of obsessed collectors with insatiable desires, and sweetly intimate stories about his family, friends, and finding true love. The result is a memoir that is distinctive, fun, page-turning, and as addictive as its namesake.

Book Shakespeare s Hamlet and Lawrence Agonistes

Download or read book Shakespeare s Hamlet and Lawrence Agonistes written by Barry J. Scherr and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to examine the influence of Shakespeare—particularly Hamlet—on D. H. Lawrence. Using the Bloomian theory of the “anxiety of influence” to probe the startling depths of Lawrence’s agon with his towering precursor Shakespeare, it closely examines Lawrence’s crypto-Jewish identity, as well as that of many of his highly individual characters, who embody the characteristics of Old Testament figures, and in so doing infuse a patriarchal strength and divine “religious” sublimity into civilized life. Lawrence’s claims about the self-sacrificing influence of Christianity on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, on the other hand, demonstrate how this influence carries over into the submission of the subject and the decline of Western Civilization. The book extrapolates this decline into a critique of the modern-day left-wing ideology that appropriates the self-abnegating individual to its collectivist ends. In responding agonistically to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Lawrence claims a far more complete, vital, and salubrious “consciousness” and a Weltanschauung that makes for greater, more fulfilling “life” thanks to the inner strength, psychic and sexual power of the Lawrentian “Self Supreme.” The book will appeal to Lawrence and Shakespeare scholars and enthusiasts who wish to appreciate Lawrence and Shakespeare as supremely profound writers and thinkers. Its unique demonstration of Bloomian literary theory makes it come poignantly alive for both graduate students and college professors.

Book Literary Modernism and Beyond

Download or read book Literary Modernism and Beyond written by Richard Lehan and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modernists turned to theories of consciousness and aestheticism to combat what they saw as the hostility of naturalism and to find new ways of thinking about reality. This consciousness took various forms, including a Jamesian sense of moral ambiguity, Proustian time spots, and B ergsonian intuition, but the Nietzschean theory that reality depends on perception connected them all. This modernist movement reached a distinguished level of achievement with novelists Thomas Mann, Marcel Proust, and James Joyce, but a succession of counterinfluences transformed it after World War II, when elitism and a desire for a homogeneous culture gave way to diversity and elements of mass culture. In Literary Modernism and Beyond, Richard Lehan tracks the evolution of the movement from its emergence in the late nineteenth century to its recent incarnations. In this wide-ranging study, Lehan demonstrates how and why the "originary vision" of modernism changed radically after it gained prominence. With critical discussions on a wide variety of major modernist writers, intellectuals, and artists and their works -- including Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Andre Gide, Franz Kafka, Zora Neale Hurston, Ian Fleming, and J. K. Rowling -- Lehan examines the large-scale changes that came as critical authority moved from one generation to another. Both popular culture and literary criticism -- especially "critical theory" -- acted as key agents of change, and structuralism, poststructuralism, and concerns with gender and race also greatly influenced the movement. Along with a process of decline and a nihilism that emerged from the modernist movement, these changes created a new literary reality and with it a new textuality. Literary Modernism and Beyond treats modernism's major innovations of myth, symbol, and structure not as individual pieces but as interrelated contributions to a historical process, the product of three generations of transformations. Lehan's analysis provides a more complete understanding than ever before of the movement itself.

Book Where D H Lawrence was Wrong about Woman

Download or read book Where D H Lawrence was Wrong about Woman written by David Holbrook and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She may be sodomized and taken in contemptuous anger, as in Lady Chatterly's Lover, and is depicted as enjoying this. The enthusiasm for the sodomizing of woman is quite clearly there in The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Mr. Noon. Some critics have spoken of this as a "holy communion," but Holbrook sees it as a denial of woman, an avoidance of the matrix where the ghost of the dead mother lurks. In the end, in The Plumed Serpent, an intelligent American woman submits herself to the fascistic domination of two murderers who are running a new religious-political campaign, while forfeiting even her capacity for orgasm. Everything in Lawrence's work leads to this false solution. Yet such critics as F.R. Leavis commend Lawrence for his concepts of "manhood"--And even endorse such stories as The Virgin and the Gypsy, in which a duplicitous traveler seduces a young girl in vengeance on the middle class.

Book Like a Black and White Kaleidoscope Tossed at Random

Download or read book Like a Black and White Kaleidoscope Tossed at Random written by Jean-Paul Pichardie and published by Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First privately published in the United States in 1920 and ruthlessly reviewed on both sides of Atlantic, “Women in Love” remains one of the most provoking novels of this century. Largely because it defies single-mindedness or dogmatic preconceptions, the text has consistently thwarted the critics in their attemps at “nailing it dow”. The present collection of essays sets out to explore how the novel keeps “walking away with the nail”, as Lawrence himself wrote in “Morality and the Novel”.

Book excerpt: Approaching the question of how male novelists perceive their female characters, this collection of creative yet analytic literary essays unwinds the complexities of male authorship versus narration. Mark Axelrod looks at a wide range of male authors including Fydor Dostoevsky, D.H. Lawrence, Carlos Fuentes, and the theories of Jacques Lacan.

Book D H Lawrence Transport and Cultural Transition

Download or read book D H Lawrence Transport and Cultural Transition written by Andrew F. Humphries and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses D. H. Lawrence’s interest in, and engagement with, transport as a literal and metaphorical focal point for his ontological concerns. Focusing on five key novels, this book explores issues of mobility, modernity and gender. First exploring how mechanized transportation reflects industry and patriarchy in Sons and Lovers, the book then considers issues of female mobility in The Rainbow, the signifying of war transport in Women in Love, revolution and the meeting of primitive and modern in The Plumed Serpent, and the reflection of dystopian post-war concerns in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Appealing to Lawrence, modernist, and mobilities researchers, this book is also of interest to readers interested in early twentieth century society, the First World War and transport history.

Book Beyond the Heroic I

Download or read book Beyond the Heroic I written by Stephen P. Clifford and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through narrative and gender theories, this study deconstructs the gender-based assumptions we make in reading narratives, and Clifford focuses by way of example on the critical responses that have narrowly defined the fiction of D.H. Lawrence and Ernest Hemingway during the past 60 years. Hemingway and Lawrence have been rigidly defined by formalists and feminists alike as overbearingly "masculine," and as a result, many critical readers dismiss their fiction as rather finite in its interpretive possibilities. In addressing the gender-based assumptions made by readers of these modernist writers, this study re-evaluates the narrative desire of characters like Brett Ashley and Frederic Henry, Ursula Brangwen and Connie Chatterley, as they respond to the heroic centers of their narratives - whether those centers are characters who inhabit the novel or critical readers who enforce limited reading strategies. By responding to the critical legacy surrounding these modernist texts, he reveals ways in which these novels and stories actually deny the limitations of a codified, heroic narrative.

Book Literature along the Lines of Flight

Download or read book Literature along the Lines of Flight written by Hidenaga Arai and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new readings of D.H. Lawrence’s later novels from the perspective of established critical theory and contemporary thought: a specific critical theory or critical perspective is selected and applied to each novel in order to present particular interpretations of each. Although remaining faithful to one’s personal desires without being unduly concerned with the outside world is considered a Lawrentian virtue, I would like to show another Lawrence who was sensitive enough to the outside world and to the social discourses of his time to employ elements of them in his novels, although subtly, and with critical shifts and displacements. Lawrence is a writer who continually draws lines of flight to escape from capitalist societies that ascribe essential value and power to money.

Book Modernism Metaphysics and Sexuality

Download or read book Modernism Metaphysics and Sexuality written by Debrah Raschke and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without question, modernist texts have been haunted by what can be known, or more aptly, what cannot be known. This position is foundational to one of the pivotal readings of modernism. Simultaneously, economic, legal, and political shifts that occurred during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries produced real material changes pertaining to the status of women. Thus, as many others have adeptly argued, modernism is also a crisis in gender. Modernism, Metaphysics, and Sexuality keenly suggests that these narratives - the thinking of what constitutes truth and the rethinking of gender - are intertwined. Interpreting Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Victory, Forster's A Passage to India and Maurice, Lawrence's Women in Love, and Woolf's A Room of One's Own and To the Lighthouse through Luce Irigaray's rereading of western metaphysics, Raschke suggests that where there is a crisis in knowing, there is also a crisis in gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serge Gainsbourg is arguably the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era. Sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey, and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, his music has crossed borders in a way no other modern French-language singer-songwriter's has. The interdisciplinary approach of Serge Gainsbourg: An International Perspective engages in a dialogue between musicology, film and media studies, literature, cultural studies, gender studies, and more, revealing the broad scope of Gainsbourg's impact in and outside of France, from the late 1950s through today. Bringing together a large selection of scholars from across the world, this collection of 26 chapters emphasizes his unique position in French culture, covering issues such as his musical influences and collaborations, esthetics and form, his experimentations with disciplines other than music (mainly film and literature), not to mention the conversation at play between high art and mass culture in this artist's multifaceted body of work.

Book D H Lawrence The Thinker as Poet

Download or read book D H Lawrence The Thinker as Poet written by F. Becket and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-06-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.H. Lawrence: The Thinker as Poet addresses a particular body of language and thought within Lawrence's oeuvre where the metaphorical, the poetic and the philosophical are intricately enmeshed. Lawrence emerges as a writer who pulls metaphor away from its merely rhetorical moorings: his distinctive style is the hallmark of one who thinks not analytically but poetically, about the birth of the self, the body unconscious, complex kinds of otherness and about metaphor itself as a mode of understanding.

Book Beyond Postmodernism

Download or read book Beyond Postmodernism written by Klaus Stierstorfer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the veritable hype concerning postmodernism in the 1980s and early 1990s, when questions about when it began, what it means and which texts it comprises were apt to trigger heated discussions, the excitement has notably cooled down at the turn of the century. Voices are now beginning to be heard which seem to suggest a new episteme in the making which points beyond postmodernism, while it remains at the same time very uncertain whether what appears as newness is not rather a return to traditional concepts, theoretical premises, and authorial practices. Contributors to this volume propose to explore new openings and recent developments in anglophone literatures and cultural theories which engage with issues seen to be central in the construction of a postmodern paradigm, but deal with them in ways that promise new openings or a new Zeitgeist.
