Book excerpt: Nuclear Birds in the Everglades provides a concise narrative and photographic history of the 2nd/52nd from 1959 through 1983. A brief history is detailed of the beginnings of the Cold War followed by the events that dovetailed into the Cuban Missile Crisis including the attack on the Moncado Barracks in 1953, the revolution and overthrow of the Cuban Government in 1959, America's sanctions against Castro's Cuba in 1960, the failed CIA-sponsored Bay of Pigs Invasion, and Russia's installation of ICBMs in Cuba in 1962. America's response brings Army units that have trained and prepared for rapid-response to anywhere in the world within 72 hours. These units included the Army's 82nd and 101st Airborne units, the 1st Armored Division and a Marine division to south Florida for an invasion of Cuba. Additionally, the 2nd Nike Hercules Missile Battalion and two HAWK missile battalions create an air defense network to defend against nuclear-capable Russian IL28 Beagle bombers from Cuba. President Kennedy isolates Cuba from the rest of the world as he tightens the noose with a naval blockade. As Russia stands down and removes its ICBMs, the decision is made to keep Army air defense missiles in south Florida for an undetermined period. Now, temporary becomes permanent but with many obstacles including heat, humidity, non-stop mosquitoes, lack of electricity and running water. In a battery-by-battery chapter, it chronicles the obstacles overcome by the men and their missiles and the many positive memories for over 3000 soldiers who were stationed there between 1962 and 1979. It includes the relocation back to Ft. Bliss before being deactivated in 1983. The unit history is a means of recalling long forgotten events and rekindling ties of comradeship. The final chapter provides a detailed description of of a Florida Nike site including the configuration, the equipment and it's function. Finally, the actual firing sequence of a Nike Hercules missile.

Book excerpt: The 31 chapters provide a wealth of previously unpublished information, plus topic syntheses, for a wide range of ecological parameters. These include the physical driving forces that created and continue to shape the Everglades and patterns and processes of its flora and fauna. The book summarizes recent studies of the region's vegetation, alligators, wading birds, and endangered species such as the snail kite and Florida panther. This referee-reviewed volume is the product of collaboration among 58 international authors from 27 institutional affiliations over nearly five years. The book concludes with a synthesis of system-wide restoration hypotheses, as they apply to the Everglades, that represent the integration and a collective viewpoint from the preceding 30 chapters. Techniques and systems learned here can be applied to ecosystems around the world.

Then let us turn the slide and look upon a picture in the heart of Amer ica's Least Known Wilderness - the great Everglades of Florida. We turn the clock of time back twenty - five years, only a span in the history of a community or a Nation. We see upon this flame lit screen, massive live oaks, festooned with the swinging, wind-tossed moss, which, with the tall cabbage palms, cocoanuts, magnolias and India rubber and mangrove trees, make a framework or back ground; swaying, dangling, green and yellow and red trimmed vines, rare and brilliant orchids. Wild coffee plants, the myrtle and the bay, with the wild lemon and the custard apple, make the scene a veritable fairyland of jungle beauty, a land of mystery that will ever lend a thrill to the name of Florida. Butterfly colonies float here and there with feather-like lightness, as they rise from their island homes, making the scene a maze of yellow and green a mosaic of wondrous beauty like a picture under glass. Book Marjory Saves the Everglades

Download or read book Marjory Saves the Everglades written by Sandra Neil Wallace and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Vibrant…an ideal starting point for further learning.” —School Library Journal “A lively portrayal of Douglas as a remarkable individual and a significant environmental activist.” —Booklist From acclaimed children’s book biographer Sandra Neil Wallace comes the inspiring and little-known story of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the remarkable journalist who saved the Florida Everglades from development and ruin. Marjory Stoneman Douglas didn’t intend to write about the Everglades but when she returned to Florida from World War I, she hardly recognized the place that was her home. The Florida that Marjory knew was rapidly disappearing—the rare orchids, magnificent birds, and massive trees disappearing with it. Marjory couldn’t sit back and watch her home be destroyed—she had to do something. Thanks to Marjory, a part of the Everglades became a national park and the first park not created for sightseeing, but for the benefit of animals and plants. Without Marjory, the part of her home that she loved so much would have been destroyed instead of the protected wildlife reserve it has become today.
