Book Birds of North Carolina Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of North Carolina Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by T. Gilbert Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of North Carolina, Vol. 4 The present volume, Birds of North Carolina, is a joint publication of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey, the State Audubon Society of North Carolina, and the State Museum. Mr. T. Gilbert Pearson, former Secretary of the North Carolina Audubon Society, was asked to take the supervision of the work, and, after consultation with Messrs. H. H. And C. S. Brimley, they decided on a joint authorship. The State Audubon Society of North Carolina for the study and protection Of wild birds and animals authorized the preparation of the material, and appropriated the necessary funds to have prepared the original draw ings and paintings with which it is illustrated. The Object Of this publication is to place in the hands of interested persons a book of ready reference which will be of assistance to them in acquiring further information regarding the birds of North Carolina; and also to preserve in per manent form the hitherto widely scattered data relative to the distribution and occurrence of the many rare Species that have been found to occur within the bor ders Of the State. To assist the student in identifying birds, an artificial key to the various orders, families, genera, and species of birds has been given, as well as a detailed description of each one treated. As a still further aid, the book has been somewhat more fully illustrated than is usual in works of this character. A record of the presence of a rare bird is of little scientific value unless the date and place of its appearance are noted; hence there is frequent mention in the text of the year, month, and day when birds of infrequent occurrence have been noted, together with a citation of the authorities for the statement. With few exceptions, the nests and eggs of birds which breed in the coast region are described, all measurements being in English inches and hundredths. Book Bird Notes Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bird Notes Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by W. Geo Creswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes, Vol. 4 I was staying in the West of Ireland when these birds first won my heart. The two I refer to were taken from the nest very young, and so petted and companionable had they become, that, stranger to them though I was, they used to swoop into my bedroom window and alight on my pillow with much cawing, and scolding, too, if I dared ever so gently to remove them. I am rather afraid to let the two I am happy enough to possess fly loose, like my friends in Mayo; and the charm of their perfect tameness and their love for human companionship cannot be seen to full advantage; but there are so many young puppies, dogs and cats about that my heart fails me to open the aviary doors, and let them range at their own sweet will. Book Birds of North Carolina

Download or read book Birds of North Carolina written by Thomas Gilbert Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The undersigned have undertaken the necessary revisions to bring the 1942 edition of "Birds of North Carolina" up to date for 1959. With the admiration and respect that came from continued association with the original authors, we sought advice from many others interested in the birds of this area. This brought the conclusion that the scholarly and popular presentation made by Pearson and the Brimleys, in the 1942 edition, should not be discarded at this time. They had, with their individual literary styles, put a lifetime of field work and research into the volume. Bird students, and their activities, have increased since 1942, and thus there has been an accumulation of new facts about birds as found in our State. This new data had to be evaluated and incorporated in the revised book. This required a diligent search through published literature, both old and recent. Twelve new kinds of birds were added to the 396 of 1942 to make a total of 408. The decision was made to incorporate a summary of the new facts about each bird as a sort of footnote. All the new material is set in a distinctive type, and starred, so that it will be readily recognized. For the birds listed in 1942 the footnotes deal principally with distribution by seasons and geographically. Some birds have other pertinent data, and many have no material change and thus there is no footnote. The twelve new birds are likewise shown in the distinctive type. The ideal is to illustrate every different bird, their sex differences and the seasonal changes of plumage. This is not achieved in this book, but there are plates and figures, along with the text descriptions, which facilitate identification. Those birds without illustrations are those quite distinctive, in color or form, and those sub-species that must be determined by collecting a series for laboratory study."--

Book The Frank C Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore Vol 4 of 7

This book was released on 2016-10-23 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, Vol. 4 of 7: The Music of the Ballads William A. Neilson, writing in the first edition of Encyclopedia Americana (1918) says: Thus, the life of a modern poem begins when it is committed to paper; a ballad then begins to die. Having this in mind, it was reluctantly and with serious concern that this editor, after two weeks of consideration, finally accepted the invitation extended to him by the late Dr. Newman I. White, the general editor of this Collee tion, to join his editorial staff. This meant to take over the transcription of the recordings of more than one thousand ballads and songs, and the editing of volumes IV and V which contain the music of the ballads and songs. It was only the hope that these transcriptions of the tunes recorded by Dr. Brown might serve someone Who loved this precious heritage to refresh his mind, recall impressions of earlier days and thus relive them in happy reminiscence, which assuaged the troubled mind of this editor. Perchance, they might also serve to introduce some persons to tunes they never heard before, or at least not in the versions given here. They might thus add to the store of treasures which have come down to us from the early settlers on this continent. And so, it was the hope such persons might Sing the airs for themselves and others, and, in the course of time, the old process of 'collective composition' would take up where it left off, and our ballad tradition, oral as usual, would again come to life. When Dr. White approached this editor some years ago, he said there were more than a thousand songs recorded by Dr. Brown, but that all of them, not counting the ones destroyed in transit to the Library of Con gress, had been transferred by technicians of the Library using the best of recording discs and the most modern means available today. On the strength of this and this writer's familiarity with the excellence of work done by the Music Division of the Library of Congress, he accepted the task. Only later did Dr. White inform him that Dr. Brown, in his enthusiasm over his recordings, had played these records (wax cylinders) numerous times for his students, without so much as changing needles. The result was that the 'dubbing' reproduced the resultant scratch of the needle with a disconcerting degree of fidelity. Add to this the fact that too many of the cylinders, while not totally destroyed in transit, were cracked enough so that the needle used in playing them produced, in passing over the cracks, a sound pattern Similar to that of a railroad car passing over the joints of the tracks. This is mentioned only to explain to some degree Why it has taken so very long before even the part con taining the ballads could appear.
