Book Birds of the Hawaiian Islands

Download or read book Birds of the Hawaiian Islands written by Henry W. Henshaw and published by . This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted ornithologist and anthropologist Henry Henshaw wrote this highly useful reference during a ten year sabbatical in the Hawaiian Islands. Out of print for decades, the few remaining copies of this scarce work are seldom found outside of academic libraries and private collections. This book is a facsimile reprint of the complete original as published in Honolulu in 1902. "In this admirable paper Mr. Henshaw has brought together in a thoroughly satisfactory manner, the result of his studies on Hawaiian birds, As a sympathetic and keen observer of Nature, the author is well known, and the present treatise is easily the best work we have on the natural history of the island avifauna. Part I consists of introductory matter, describing Hawaii as an Ornithological Field, Obstacles to Ornithological Studies in Hawaiian Islands, Destruction of Hawaiian Forests, Environmental Changes Disastrous to Hawaiian Birds, Faunal Zones, Diseases of Hawaiian Birds, Origin of Hawaiian Birds, Ornithological Knowledge of Hawaiian Natives, and History of Ornithological Investigations in the Islands, all of which is remarkably interesting reading. Part II is the Descriptive portion. Under each species is given a biographical sketch and a short description... It is probable that few persons in this country have any conception of the difficulties attending the observation of native land birds in the islands. Mr. Henshaw's contribution is therefore so much the more valuable" - Walter K. Fisher. - The Condor, 1903

Book Americans in Sumatra

Download or read book Americans in Sumatra written by James W. Gould and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common belief that until recently Americans have preferred isolation to interest in remote areas such as Southeast Asia. This thesis can be tested by examining the history of American relations with a place on the opposite side of the globe from the United States. Such a land is Sumatra. It is one of the largest islands in the world. Its I66,789 square mile area exceeds that of the third largest American state, California, and is larger than Italy. Lying halfway around the world from the United States, its I050 mile length is almost divided by the equator, which runs across it for 285 miles. Sumatra's strategic importance is two-fold. Firstly, it is the first island stepping stone from the Asiatic mainland into the Australasian archipelago. This was demonstrated in I942 when the United States stationed planes on Sumatra in an attempt to stem the Japanese advance southward. Secondly, it lies athwart the shortest sea routes from Eastern Asia to Europe and the Eastern United States. Sumatra's southern tip forms one side of the Straits of Sunda which guards the access to the Java, China and Philippine Seas. At the island's northern tip is the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, the shortest sea lane be tween the Near and Far East. The opening of the Suez Canal in I869 shifted the shortest route between the Far East and the Western World from the Sunda to the Malacca Straits.
