Download or read book Birds of America Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Gilbert Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of America, Vol. 2 To learn the proper use Of the opera-glass, select some bird, if possible, that is sitting still. Have your back to the sun. Focus the glass on the tree, and then the bird by noting the position Of the branch and Sighting the glass as you would a gun. Note the size of the bird. It will be difficult at first to judge the size in inches, but you may compare it with certain common and well-known birds. You may have a scale Of sizes, beginning with the Yellow Warbler or Chipping Sparrow, and reading like this: Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Bluebird, Catbird, Robin, Dove, Crow. Observe these birds well; note the size of each. Turn to your book, and get it in inches. Write it down; commit it to memory; have it always in mind. By making good use of such a scale, you may become expert in judging size by comparison. Next, the shape of the bird is important. Note whether the bird as a whole is Slim or stout. Some allowance may be made as to how the feathers are carried at the time. All birds can raise or lower the feathers Of the body at will. If you can see the shape of the beak, you may be able to refer the bird at once to the family in which it belongs. If it is not much larger or smaller than a Song Sparrow, and has a short, conical bill, probably it is a Sparrow. If it is a little smaller than a Song Sparrow or about the size of a Chippy, and has a short but slender bill, a tri e curved, probably it is a Warbler, or belongs to some other insect-eating family. The length and Shape of the tail are important. Try to see whether the tail is long or Short, rounded, square, or forked. If the bird is large, with a hooked beak and long tail, probably it is a Hawk. If the beak is long and straight, or nearly so, the tail short and the legs long, it must be a Heron, or some other wader. The color of the bird is very important; indeed, it is about the only feature ordinarily Observed. First, note the color of the upper part, i. E., the top and Sides of head, back and sides of neck, back, wings, and tail; next, that of the under parts throat, front of neck, breast, and belly. Remember that the breast and belly Often will seem darker than they really are, on account of being in shade; thus a pure white will seem gray. Be careful to note just where each color actually is; then note any conspicuous mark, for such a mark alone, taken with the size Of the bird, Often is enough to establish its identity. Book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint written by Chester A. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Eastern North America This volume is in reality but an extension of, an enlargement upon and a combining of the "show me" properties of "Bird Guide - Land Birds" and "Bird Guide - Water Birds." The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of America, Vol. 1 To the technical descriptive matter of especial interest to the systematic ornithologist, and the popular characterizations intended particularly for the non-scientific student Of birds, has been added wherever it is called for much very important and interesting matter concerning the actual usefulness of birds. This subject of economic ornithology has been carefully investigated by the United States Bureau Of Biological Survey, whose experts have gathered and compiled a great mass of statistics and other data concerning the food habits of birds, the object being to convey precise information as to which are the useful and which are the harmful species. It would be difficult to overstate the value of this work if its results were generally understood, for these researches demonstrate beyond peradventure the enormous usefulness of the birds in destroying insect pests which, but for this check of their natural rate of increase, would ruin every year many millions of dollars worth of crops, and threaten with defoliation and death many kinds of trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of Eastern North America Which occur in New England, Illinois, and Florida. Taking these States to form the points of an imaginary triangle, a somewhat crude idea of the range of species which occur within this area may be obtained, as it is evident that birds which occur in Illinois, New England, and Florida must, in all probability, also occur in most of the intermediate States; whereas those which are recorded from only one of these localities would probably be species which only touched within the limits of this area during their migrations, or birds of comparatively local distribution. Of course, a number of the species do not occur in either New England, Illinois, or Florida, as the list includes all birds which are known. Another Committee was at the same time appointed to make a critical examina tion of the A. O. U. Download or read book A History of North American Birds Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by S. F. Baird and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of North American Birds, Vol. 3 The group of birds usually known as the Raptores, or Rapacious Birds, embraces three well-marked divisions, namely, the Owls, the Hawks, and the Vultures. In former classifications they headed the Class of Birds, being honored with this position in consequence of their powerful organization, large size, and predatory habits. But it being now known that in structure they are less perfectly organized than the Passcres and Strisorcs, birds generally far more delicate in organization, as well as smaller in size, they occupy a place in the more recent arrangements nearly at the end of the Terrestrial forms. The complete definition of the order Raptorcs, and of its subdivisions, requires the enumeration of a great many characters; and that their distinguishing features may be more easily recognized by the student, I give first a brief diagnosis, including their simplest characters, to be followed by a more detailed account hereafter. Common Characters. Bill hooked, the tipper mandible furnished at the base with a soft skin, or "cere," in which the nostrils are situated. Toes, three before and one behind. Raptores. Strigidae. Eyes directed forwards, and surrounded by radiating feathers, which are bounded, except anteriorly, by a circle or rim of differently formed, stiffer feathers. Outer toe reversible. Claws much hooked and very sharp. Legs and toes usually feathered, or, at least, coated with bristles. The Owls. Falconidae. Eyes lateral, and not surrounded by radiating feathers. Outer toe not reversible (except in Pandion). Claws usually booked and sharp, but variable. Head more or less completely feathered. The Hawks. Cathartidae. Eyes lateral; whole head naked. Outer toe not reversible; claws slightly curved, blunt. The Vultures. The preceding characters, though purely artificial, may nevertheless serve to distinguish the three families of Raptores belonging to the North American Ornis; a more scientific diagnosis, embracing a sufficient number of osteological, and accompanying anatomical characters, will be found further on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Birds: Studied and Photographed From Life AN important and sometimes difficult phase in the study of bird life is to observe accurately and report without false interpretation the habits and actions of birds. The naturalist who uses the camera in the field often has the advantage of backing his observations with proof (not an unimportant thing in nature writing of to-day), and if he produces good authentic photographs, one may be quite sure they were not secured without patient waiting and a careful study of his subjects. Download or read book Eggs of North American Birds Classic Reprint written by Chas; J. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eggs of North American Birds The present work on the Eggs of North American Birds embodies the results of my studies on this subject during the past thirty years. During this time, many thousand specimens have been examined and notes made on them. Besides this, I have, when necessary, supplemented my own observations with those of others, and have consulted all available works upon the subject for this purpose. But, unless so stated, I am responsible for the descriptions. I have deemed it quite unnecessary to repeat descriptions of the eggs of allied species where the differences in the average specimens are indistinguishable, but have simply stated this fact. All of the names of the species and sub-species of birds which occur within the prescribed limits are included in the work; and, CA-en if their eggs are unknown, the breeding ran re, when known, is given. No eggs are described unless the identification of the specimen is absolutely correct. In the matter of nomenclature, I have followed that of the American Ornithologists' Union, hoping thereby to secure unchanging uniformity of names, while the boundary lines established by that body are also used as defining the limits of the North American avifauna. I have, however, made a few minor changes, where I have personally differed in opinion as to the specific or sub-specific rank of certain birds.
