Download or read book Arctic Shorebirds in North America written by Jonathan Robert Bart and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year shorebirds from North and South America migrate thousands of miles to spend the summer in the Arctic. There they feed in shoreline marshes and estuaries along some of the most productive and pristine coasts anywhere. With so much available food they are able to reproduce almost explosively; and as winter approaches, they retreat south along with their offspring, to return to the Arctic the following spring. This remarkable pattern of movement and activity has been the object of intensive study by an international team of ornithologists who have spent a decade counting, surveying, and observing these shorebirds. In this important synthetic work, they address multiple questions about these migratory bird populations. How many birds occupy Arctic ecosystems each summer? How long do visiting shorebirds linger before heading south? How fecund are these birds? Where exactly do they migrate and where exactly do they return? Are their populations growing or shrinking? The results of this study are crucial for better understanding how environmental policies will influence Arctic habitats as well as the far-ranging winter habitats used by migratory shorebirds.

Book excerpt: In 1998, Sandy Komito engaged in what serious birders call a Big Year run. This is a year-long marathon contest where a birder tries to see as many different birds as possible in a single year. This book, written in his own inimitable style, is a fast-paced, exciting story of his experiences on the road detailing the joys of success, the disappointments with failure, all a part of the drama experienced during his year-long adventure where he set the new North America record of 745 different birds seen in a single year. Based on his extensive travel experience, he includes suggestions & insights as to how one can save money in dealing with airlines, rental car agencies & motels. A rather interesting feature is a section called, "My Little Black Book" providing names & numbers of people & places to call for those wanting to duplicate some of the travel he has experienced. Packed into this "Little Black Book" are suggestions as to where to find low-priced airlines as well as travel to Alaska's lesser-known places. It's an authoritative wealth of information for those interested in birds, nature, travel & adventure. 355 pages including 16 in full color. $34.95. Download or read book The North American Sea Ducks written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21 species of sea ducks are one of the larger subgroups (Tribe Mergini) of the waterfowl family Anatidae, and the 16 species (one historically extinct) that are native to North America represent the largest number to be found on any continent, and also the largest number of endemic sea duck species native to any continent. Although generally not important as game birds, the sea ducks include some economically important birds such as the eiders, the basis for the Arctic eiderdown industry and a historically important food source for some Native American cultures. They also include what is probably the most northerly breeding species of all waterfowl and an icon of Arctic bird life, the long-tailed duck. The sea ducks also include species having some of the most complex and diverse pair-forming postural and acoustic displays of all waterfowl (goldeneyes and bufflehead), and some of the deepest diving species of all waterfowl (scoters and long-tailed duck). Sea ducks are highly prone to population disasters caused by oil spills and other water contaminants and, like other seabirds, are among the first bird groups that are being affected by current global warming trends in polar regions. This book is an effort to summarize succinctly our current knowledge of sea duck biology and to provide a convenient survey of the vast technical literature on the group, with over 900 literature references. It also includes 90,000 words of text (more than 40 percent of which is new), 15 updated range maps, 11 black & white and 20 color photographs, over 30 ink drawings, and nearly 150 sketches. Lastly, the North American sea ducks include the now extinct Labrador duck, the only northern hemisphere waterfowl species to have gone extinct in modern times. I have gratefully reprinted a Labrador duck watercolor by Sir Peter Scott. Considering recent population crashes in other sea ducks, such as the Steller's eider and spectacled eider, it should also offer a sobering reminder of the fragility of our natural world and its inhabitants, including us.
