Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by Marcia B. Siegel In 1930 , seventeen-year-old Dorothy Bird from Victoria, British Columbia, was sent to study dance at the Cornish School in Seattle. There she was totally captivated by Martha Graham, who, at the end of summer, invited Dorothy to study with her at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Dorothy debuted with the Graham Group in 1931 in Primitive Mysteries, and was a company member and Graham’s demonstrator until 1937. Bird’s Eye View is a warm and human story that chronicles the early development of modern dance from a dancer’s perspective. Dorothy Bird was the only dancer of her time to work with all the major choreographers in concert and on Broadway: George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Doris Humphrey, Helen Tamiris, Anna Sokolow, Herbert Ross, Jose Limon, and Jerome Robbins, among others. She recounts fascinating theater experiences with such luminaries as Orson Welles, Gertrude Lawrence, Carol Channing, Danny Kaye, and Elia Kazan. Dorothy shares her methods and experiences as a teacher for Balanchine and her twenty-five-year tenure at the Neighborhood Playhouse to highlight her philosophy of “giving back” to the next generation of performers. Of all the artists Dorothy Bird worked with, Martha Graham figures most strongly in the book and in her life. Her narrative about Graham’s early creative process is a valuable addition to the literature, as is the story of her personal involvement with Graham. The reader gains an intimate insight into the love and fear instilled by Graham in her followers.

Book The Human Web

  • Author : John Robert McNeill
  • Publisher : W. W. Norton & Company

Download or read book The Human Web written by John Robert McNeill and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the first civilizations emerge when and where they did? How did Islam become a unifying force in the world of its birth? What enabled the West to project its goods and power around the world from the fifteenth century on? Why was agriculture invented seven times and the steam engine just once?World-historical questions such as these, the subjects of major works by Jared Diamond, David Landes, and others, are now of great moment as global frictions increase. In a spirited and original contribution to this quickening discussion, two renowned historians, father and son, explore the webs that have drawn humans together in patterns of interaction and exchange, cooperation and competition, since earliest times. Whether small or large, loose or dense, these webs have provided the medium for the movement of ideas, goods, power, and money within and across cultures, societies, and nations. From the thin, localized webs that characterized agricultural communities twelve thousand years ago, through the denser, more interactive metropolitan webs that surrounded ancient Sumer, Athens, and Timbuktu, to the electrified global web that today envelops virtually the entire world in a maelstrom of cooperation and competition, J. R. McNeill and William H. McNeill show human webs to be a key component of world history and a revealing framework of analysis. Avoiding any determinism, environmental or cultural, the McNeills give us a synthesizing picture of the big patterns of world history in a rich, open-ended, concise account.

Book Social Memory and Heritage Tourism Methodologies

Download or read book Social Memory and Heritage Tourism Methodologies written by Stephen P. Hanna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The examination of social memory and heritage tourism has grown considerably over the past few decades as scholars have critically re-examined the relationships between past memories and present actions at international, national, and local scales. Methodological innovation and reflection have accompanied theoretical advances as researchers strive to understand representations, experiences, thoughts, emotions and identities of the various actors involved in the reproduction of social memory and heritage landscapes. Social Memory and Heritage Tourism Methodologies describes and demonstrates innovations – including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method approaches – for analysing the process and politics of remembering and touring the past through place. An introductory chapter looks at the history of social memory and heritage tourism research and the particular challenges posed by these fields of study. In subsequent chapters, the reader is lead through the varying methodologies employed by presenting them in the context of an in-depth case study from range of geographical locations. The resulting volume showcases innovative research in social memory and heritage tourism and provides the reader with insights into how they can successfully conduct their own research while avoiding common pitfalls. This title will be useful reading for scholars, professionals and students in tourism, geography, anthropology and museum studies who are preparing to conduct research on the reproduction of social memory in particular landscapes and places or are interested in investigating heritage tourism practices and representations.

Book A Bird s Eye View of the Practices of Humanism

Download or read book A Bird s Eye View of the Practices of Humanism written by Horace Smith and published by Chipmunkapublishing ltd. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description This e book is about my experiences and what I have seen through my extensive counselling and therapy as I translate in a language that many can understand my experiences as I come out of the shock from a great war of my conscience that was fought over a period of 32 years for the right just to live a normal life, free from the control of society, governments and satanic inspired people who wanted to create in me a new species, devoid of all the godly values that Christ bestow on mankind when he died on the cross and rose from the dead to eternal life. Both spiritual and natural. It is about my discoveries as being considered the vile, because of my mental illness, in a affluent society that only consider the poor as commerce to be sold and bought, to fight their wars and die without living. Mostly in America and how the normal community treated me as an individual. It shows how many people just wanted to experiment on me as their guinea pig so that in the world of commerce they would be able to use my spiritual knowledge to fool many into believing that they are wise. It shows what those who believe in the humanist theory that we evolved from apes and life just happened without a reason that has led to so many wars as mankind is no longer held accountable for their actions and so to bring peace we as the more advance nations send troops to foreign lands to kill in the image of making a better world. About the Author Horace Smith at the age of ten was sodomised by a paedophile ring that existed in the black Jamaican church, in a satanic ritual service to gain power over his soul, which is quite common in the Jamaican and African religious communities, here in London in the 70s. This tragic event led to severe mental health problems that has existed in Horace's life for 32 years to date. It was in 1991 that on his return back to London and after seeing a consultant at SLAM he was diagnosed wit paranoid schizophrenia and hearing voices and seeing delusions, but with the help of treatment and medication, Horace is able to live a near normal life.
