Download or read book Birds and Nature in Natural Colors Vol 4 of 5 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds and Nature in Natural Colors, Vol. 4 of 5: A Guide in the Study of Birds and Their Habits; Complete in Five Volumes With 240 Page Plates in Colors, Being a Scientific and Popular Treatise on Four Hundred Birds of the United States and Canada Length: 7 inches. Range: Colorado to the: Pacific coast and north to the Hudson Bay country. This handsome bird of the thrush family is more delicately colored than our eastern bluebird. In some localities it is known as the Rocky Mountain, or Arctic, Bluebird. The habits are similar to those of the bluebird. The birds feed upon insects, worms, wild fruit, and seeds. They are able to adapt themselves to climatic conditions and weather some of the severest storms. In certain portions of our western states the birds show a preference for the habitation of man and build their nests in nooks and crevices about barns and sheds. Frequently the deserted excavations constructed by various woodpeckers are used as nesting sites. Dry grass is the chief and often only article used in constructing the nest. Four or five pale blue eggs are laid. Like our eastern bluebird, the young when able to fly are escorted by. The male, while the female prepares the nest for another setting. The exquisite coloring of the Arctic Bluebird makes it seem the gentlest, most beautiful of all the lovely bluebirds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gorgeous expanded edition of Werner's Nomenclature of Colours, a landmark reference book on color and its origins in nature First published in 1814, Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomically organized guide to color in the natural world. Compiled by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner, the book was expanded and enhanced in 1821 by Patrick Syme, who added color swatches and further color descriptions, bringing the total number of classified hues to 110. The resulting resource has been invaluable not only to artists and designers but also to zoologists, botanists, mineralogists, anatomists, and explorers, including Charles Darwin on the famous voyage of the Beagle. Nature's Palette makes this remarkable volume available to today's readers, and is now fully enhanced with new illustrations of all the animals, plants, and minerals Werner referenced alongside each color swatch. Readers can see "tile red" in a piece of porcelain jasper, the breast of a cock bullfinch, or a Shrubby Pimpernel. They can admire "Berlin blue" on a piece of sapphire, the Hepatica flower, or the wing feathers of a jay. Interspersed throughout the book are lavish feature pages displaying cases of taxidermy, eggs, shells, feathers, minerals, and butterflies, with individual specimens cross-referenced to the core catalog. Featuring contributions by leading natural history experts along with more than 1,000 color illustrations and eight gatefolds, Nature's Palette is the ideal illustrated reference volume for visual artists, naturalists, and anyone who is captivated by color.

Book Natural Photonics and Bioinspiration

Download or read book Natural Photonics and Bioinspiration written by Olivier Deparis and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photonic structures occurring in biological tissues such as butterfly wings, beetle elytra or fish scales are responsible for a broad range of optical effects including iridescence, narrow-band reflection, large solid-angle scattering, polarization effects, additive color mixing, fluid-induced color changes, controlled fluorescence. Studies have provided understanding of the underlying optical mechanisms and the biological functions as well as inspiration for the design and development of novel photonic devices, also called bioinspiration. In this forward-thinking book, the research related to photonic structures in natural organisms is reviewed with a main foPhotonic structures occurring in biological tissues such as butterfly wings, beetle elytra, or fish scales are responsible for a broad range of optical effects including iridescence, narrow band reflection, large solid-angle scattering, polarization, additive color mixing, fluid induced color changes, and controlled fluorescence. This book reviews research of biological photonic devices in accordance with the fundamental aspects of physical optics and environmental biology. It provides readers with an understanding of numerical modelling based on morphological and optical characterizations as well as the quantitative treatment of color vision. This forward-thinking book ties these concepts to the design and synthesis of bioinspired photonic devices and opens the door to the applications of nature’s lessons in the technical world. This resource introduces a methodology for working with and utilizing bioinspiration. It includes the experimental and numerical tools necessary for the characterization and simulation of photonic structures and uses original concepts as examples, with a focus on bioinspired hygrochromatic materials. Professionals are brought up to speed on a variety of fabrication techniques and methods of synthesis all following a straightforward bottom-up or top-down approach. The reader will gain an understanding of the capability of bioinspiration to meet human needs. This book’s explanation of how natural photonics structures behave as efficient solar absorbers or thermal management devices makes it a useful resource for technical professionals in the field of energy and environment, and the concepts presented in this book also have applications in the designs of optical coatings, sensors, and light sources.
