Download or read book Birds and Flowers About Concord New Hampshire Classic Reprint written by Frances M. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds and Flowers About Concord, New Hampshire Many years ago a little girl lived in Concord, who loved everything out of doors - the air, the clouds, the hills, the running water, the birds and the owers. She especially loved the birds, because they were alive. She wanted to know their names, but nobody could tell her. Her people did not know; her teachers did not know; she never found anybody who did know. Nothing of that sort was ever taught in the schools, and yet they were always telling how good the schools were in those days. She used sometimes to wonder if it were wicked to want to know about things that she saw out-doors, because everything of that sort was religiously kept out of the schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friendship of Nature: A New England Chronicle of Birds and Flowers Here in New England, we have no calendar of Nature, no rigid law of season, or of growth. The climate, a caprice, a wholly eerie thing, sets tra dition at defiance and forces our poets to contradict each other. The flower which one declares the harbinger of spring may be a lazy vanguard in another year 5 the fringed gentian, set by Bryant in frayed and barren fields, frosty and solitary, usually follows the cardinal flower, in late September. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds and Seasons: New England Mr. Burroughs is confessedly the most graphic and entertaining of our authors on Ornithology. I regret that I had not seen his book, "Wake Robin," before this volume was in type, as the perusal of it would have improved my own pages. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: THE EARLY FLOWERS. Among the vernal flowers are usually classed all those which in propitious seasons are open during the mouth of April, like the ground-laurel, the draba verna, and the hepatica, also during the month of May, like the anemones, violets, bellworts, and Solomon's seals, which are among the true Mayflowers. Within the space of these two months the most delicate and interesting flowers of the whole year come to perfection, beginning with the epigaea and hepatica, and bringing along in their rear myriads of bellworts, ginsengs, anemones, saxifrages, and columbines, until the procession is closed by the cranes- bill, that leads forth the brilliant host of summer. The vernal flowers are mostly herbaceous and minute. They grow in sheltered situations on the southern slopes of declivities and the sunny borders of a wood, and require but a short period of heat and sunshine to perfect their blossoms. They are generally pale in their tints, many of them white, and often tinged with delicate shades of blue or lilac. The anemones of our woods are our true Mayflowers. They seldom appear before the first of May, and there is hardly a solitary one to be seen after the first week in June. The ground-laurel, vulgarly called Mayflower, is usually in perfection in the middle of April, and, except very far north, is out of bloom by the middle of May. There are some of our early flowers that remain in perfection during a part of the summer, until they lose their charms by constantly intruding themselves upon our notice. Such are the common buttercups, -which are favorites of children when they first appear, but shine like gilded toys, and symbolize no charming sentiment to endear' them to our sight. One of the earliest flowers of April, appearing about two weeks later than the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of New Hampshire In the following pages an attempt has been made to bring to gether a list of the species of birds known to have occurred with in the State of New Hampshire during historic times, together with a general account of their distribution, faunal position, times of migration, and, in case of the rarer species, a detailed list of the known instance of occurrence. The present list can be at best only preliminary, and there remains much yet to be done in 'the way of obtaining more complete information as to the de tails of distribution and migration, and particularly so in the case of the water birds. In addition to much that has been already recorded in many books and periodicals, a considerable body of unpublished facts relative to the birds of the State is here included, based not only on the writer's personal observations, but also on those of a num ber of ornithologists who have contributed most generously of their notes, and to whom due acknowledgment is made. Book The Friendship of Nature a New England Chronicle of Birds and Flowers

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ...rushing over the milldam, and the hylodes are peeping faintly. Daylight did not show even an early bee, though for a week wood has been sawed in a sunny spot and the sweet dust lies scattered on the ground; but through the night, from the warm southeast, where the sun first touches the fields that run to the marshes, where there are old matted reeds, comes the welcome "peep! peep! peep!" As the days lengthen, from afternoon till dawn you hear the marsh frogs' chorus; it is not musical and would be little prized at any other season. Surely the hylodes, more than the larger frogs, inspired Aristophanes by their ceaselessness: --"In their yearly revelry, Brekeke--kesh, ko-ash, ko-ash!" But this croaking makes the blood flow quicker; it is the vocal spring sign of animal nature, even though the fox and owl may breed in February, and it is the prophet of the coming bird music even as the skunk-cabbage is the forerunner of the violet. The late March moon has a more human face, though it still casts bare shadows, and as it pales at morning the song-sparrows huddled in the bushes sing half to the night and half to the day. The typical spring night is only quiet in comparison to dawn and twilight. Even-song lasts an hour after sundown and matins begin as long before sunrise. Even in the midnight hours, the forces of Nature are too potent to rest wholly; in this lies the principal difference between the nights of spring and those of early autumn. The temperature of the two seasons is much alike, and the shadows also, but the spring nights overflow with little murmurings. Birds stir and change their perching, and with drowsy bustle flutter from branch to branch; the whip-poor-will awakes the wood echoes, and his cry never grows...

Book The Birds of Springfield and Vicinity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Springfield and Vicinity Classic Reprint written by Robert O. Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Springfield and Vicinity The Hydrographic valley of the Connecticut at Springfield is about sixty miles wide, and the river here is somewhat east of the center of the basin. The State of Connecticut lies three and a half miles south of Springfield, the town of Longmeadow intervening. Thirteen miles to the west, a mountain range rises abruptly from the level land at Westfield, continuing beyond to the Housatonic Valley, forming a portion of the so-called Berkshire hills, and running north until it joins the Green mountains in Vermont. The highest point of this range in Hampden Count is "Round Top" in Chester, which reaches an altitude of 1800 feet. About ten miles to the east of Springfield lies a range of considerably less height, which is locally called the "Wilbraham Hills," and extends north to New Hampshire, where it merges into the White mountain range. Five miles to the west of Springfield is a series of Hills, 400 to 900 feet in height, of trap rock formation, which continues up the valley and crosses the river, south of the greater part of Northampton. Here the hills are higher, Mount Tom and Nonotuck on the west side, and Holyoke on the east, reaching an altitude of about 1200 feet. The Connecticut River at Springfield is but forty feet above tide water, and except in time of freshet, is a sluggish stream, averaging about 1200 feet in width. The important branches in this vicinity are the Chicopee, Mill and Scantic Rivers, that enter from the east, and Westfield and Farmington Rivers, that come from the west, and the largest natural landlocked body of water is Lake Congamond in Southwick, which covers about 410 acres. In nearly all the towns there are small ponds, both natural and artificial. The land of the river towns is sparsely timbered, being mostly under cultivation.
