Book Birding Hotspots in the Alentejo

Download or read book Birding Hotspots in the Alentejo written by Gonçalo Elias and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region described in this book has long been known among birdwatchers as one of the best areas in Portugal for two groups of birds: on one hand, steppe birds, including bustards, sandgrouse, rollers and larks; on the other hand, large soaring birds, namely vultures, eagles, and other birds of prey. However, the region of Castro Verde and Mértola has much more to offer, including waterbirds, passerines and other land birds, many of which are not easy to find in the country. Some highlights of this region include Ferruginous Duck, Black Stork, Lesser Kestrel, Crane, Collared Pratincole, Whiskered Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Scops Owl, Red-necked Nightjar, White-rumped Swift, Tawny Pipit, Black-eared Wheatear, Golden Oriole, and Hawfinch, among others. In a well-planned day visit, it is not difficult to see 70 or even 80 species, with larger figures possible at certain times of the year.

Book excerpt: Bradt's Alentejo remains the only standalone guide to this emerging region, providing all the information needed to find that idyllic rural retreat, beachside boutique or romantic hotel set in a converted palace. Restaurants, wines, cafes and cultural sights have all been meticulously chosen and reviewed by the author and there is a wealth of background cultural and historical information to unlock the secrets of the Alentejo's colourful past and captivating present. This new second edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect all the most recent developments and includes a new section on castle towns, expanded information on Alandroal and Juromenha, new coverage of Alegrete and the Serra de Sao Mamede and new features on everything from The Siege of Badajoz to Alentejo wild flowers, Portuguese grape varieties and the Rebel Prince of Marvão amongst others. More hotels and tours have also been added, especially around Évora, Monsaraz and Marvão. The Alentejo is Portugal's Andalusia - without the crowds - a landscape littered with Moorish monuments, sleepy villages and Crusader castles. The beaches are glorious sweeps of white sand, broken by rocky coves nested by storks, or backed by caramel coloured sandstone cliffs. The towns and villages of the interior appear little-changed since medieval times - clusters of sugar-cube houses tumble down hills from heavy-set castles. There are palaces and there are myriad megalithic monuments - lost in the rolling countryside in the olive groves, or among orange trees and withered cork oaks. Wild boar and lynx roam the extensive forests and heathlands - which offer wonderful hiking and hill walking. And the food. fresh Atlantic bream, sizzling prawns, forest-reared pork and dozens of glorious wines with which to wash it down. Expert author and fluent Portuguese speaker Alex Robinson has been visiting, writing and photographing Portugal for more than 20 years and in this new edition has evolved his guide to the Alentejo even further to make an ideal companion for a successful trip whatever your interest, age or budget: hikers, wine and food lovers, weekend travellers, history enthusiasts and those looking for a second home are all catered for.

Book The 100 Best Birding Hotspots in the Algarve

Download or read book The 100 Best Birding Hotspots in the Algarve written by Gonçalo Elias and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Algarve is a fascinating region for birdwatching. It comprises a variety of habitats, from coastal wetlands and saltpans to rocky cliffs, oak and pine woodland and deep river valleys. As it lies on a migration route, it can provide great birding throughout the year. In this book, we describe 100 birding hotspots, located throughout the region. The contents have been organised according to the 16 concelhos, so there is a chapter for each concelho. This way, it is ensured that all hotspots that are located in the same area are grouped in the same chapter. Concelhos are presented in alphabetical order. Each chapter begins with a two-page introduction, which highlights some interesting birds that can be seen in the concelho and how the hotspots look like. After that, detailed information is provided for each hotspot: a brief description, a list of the most interesting birds that can be found there, and some suggestions on how it can be explored. All the places described in this book are accessible by car. In many cases, small pedestrian routes are also suggested, which will allow for a better exploration of each of the selected sites.

Book Birding Hotspots in the Algarve

Download or read book Birding Hotspots in the Algarve written by Gonçalo Elias and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume in the series 'Birding hotspots in the Algarve'. It covers the central part of the inner Algarve and deals only with inland sites (Serra do Caldeirão and Barrocal). Serra is the Portuguese word given to a chain of hills. Caldeirão means cauldron. Serra do Caldeirão is a hilly area lying in the northern half of central Algarve. It peaks at 589 m north of Loulé. The Barrocal is the name given to a strip of limestone hills that lie between the Serra do Caldeirão and the coastal lowlands. It is the first line of hills that can be seen from the coast when one looks north and it extends northwards until the limestone ends and is replaced by schist. For the visiting birdwatcher, the inland areas provide an opportunity to see a number of species that are very difficult to find at the coast. The serra has vast expanses of woodland, namely Cork and Holm Oak and Maritime Pine. These woods are home to a number of forest birds, including Tawny Owl, Woodlark, Redstart, Orphean Warbler, Crested Tit, Nuthatch, Short-toed Treecreeper, Golden Oriole, and Hawfinch. Some hillsides are covered mainly with scrub, where typical birds include Thekla Lark, Subalpine and Dartford Warblers, and Rock Bunting. A few deep valleys have riparian galleries, where one can find Melodious Warbler, Iberian Chiffchaff, and Long-tailed Tit.

Book Birding Hotspots in the Algarve

Download or read book Birding Hotspots in the Algarve written by Gonçalo Elias and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ria Formosa is the largest wetland in the Algarve and it is very important for waterbirds throughout the year. From the birdwatcher's perspective, the area is very interesting because it offers the opportunity to see large numbers of waterbirds: ducks, herons, flamingos, waders, gulls and terns can all be plentiful here.In terms of habitat and birding hotspots, a distinction should be made between the barrier islands and the rest of the Ria.The barrier islands have little vegetation yet support their own typical birdlife. Breeding species include Kestrel, Stone Curlew, Kentish Plover, Crested, Short-toed and Lesser Short-toed Larks, Spectacled Warbler and Linnet, whereas winter visitors include Golden Plover, Short-eared Owl, Skylark and Meadow Pipit. However, it is during migration periods that barrier islands can be especially interesting, as they are the last stop before the North African coast is reached and are used as a stop-over by many small land birds. All barrier islands are bordered by beaches on their southern side and by tidal flats on the northern side, so they also attract many waterbirds.Behind the barrier islands lies the lagoon system, or Ria, which comprises mudflats, sandbanks and saltpans, as well as some smaller coastal lagoons. Breeding birds include Spoonbill, Purple Swamphen, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet, Kentish Plover, Little Tern and the Iberian race of Yellow Wagtail. As to passage and wintering waterbirds, the area is of outstanding importance for its populations of ducks, herons, waders and gulls. The surrounding areas also hold many land birds.

Book The Birds of the Iberian Peninsula

Download or read book The Birds of the Iberian Peninsula written by Eduardo de Juana and published by Helm. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iberian Peninsula is one of Europe's most ornithologically varied regions offering a host of regional specialties. It includes famous birding hotspots such as the Coto Donaña wetlands, mountainous areas such as the Picos de Europa and the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean cork and holm oak forests of the southwest, the migration crossroads of the Strait of Gibraltar and the steppe-like plains of Extremadura and Alentejo. Large numbers of birders from around Europe visit the region to see this wealth of winged wildlife, but to date there has been no comprehensive regional avifauna in English. Birds of the Iberian Peninsula is a national avifauna that fills this gap in the ornithological literature. Full-colour throughout, the book begins with authoritative introductory chapters covering subjects such as geography, climate, habitats, the history of Iberian ornithology and the composition of the avifauna. The species accounts then cover every species recorded in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra, including the many vagrants. For each species there is detailed treatment of distribution--with maps of breeding and wintering ranges--habitat selection, population trends, historical and current status, migration and conservation.

Book Where to Watch Birds in Sardinia

Download or read book Where to Watch Birds in Sardinia written by Ilaria Fozzi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sardinia is in the middle of the western Mediterranean between Europe and Africa. Its location on the Mediterranean flyway makes it an important refuelling stop for migrating birds - especially on its extensive wetlands. A popular destination for birders and naturalists, Sardinia has a great diversity of fauna and flora, along with rich cultural and historical attractions. Where to Watch Birds in Sardinia, written by two ornithologists with extensive experience of Sardinian birding, provides detailed information on the 43 key birding sites in Sardinia. For each site the target species are highlighted, along with information on habitat, when to visit, other wildlife, facilities, access, how long you'll need, the photographic opportunities and recommendations for your visit. A map of each site helps with planning and navigation to the site. Often described as a micro-continent for the variety of its ecosystems, Sardinia has mountains, forests, lowlands, gorges, wetlands, long sandy beaches and rocky shores. It is home to around 300 bird species, 41 mammals, 18 reptiles and 8 amphibians as well as a hugely diverse invertebrate fauna. Owing to its geographical isolation, altitudinal variation and limited human presence, Sardinia has retained many habitats that are favourable for the development and preservation of a large number of endemic plants, accounting for 10 per cent of the island's flora and including several orchid species. Sardinia's 'must-see' birds include Greater Flamingo, Eleonora's Falcon, Purple Swamphen, Little Bustard, Audouin's Gull, Marmora's Warbler, Corsican Finch, Griffon Vulture and Barbary Partridge. In spring, April and May are the best months for migration, while for the autumn migration the best period stretches from the end of August to the end of October. Wetlands are the most important sites in springtime, with many species stopping for some days before going north. During the breeding season these areas are very important for Greater Flamingo, Audouin's Gull, Little Tern and several other species of waders, gulls and terns. The breeding season is also a good time to see 'special' resident species like the Little Bustard in display or to hear the flight call of the Corsican Finch. In winter, large concentrations of ducks and gulls are found on the island, with the occasional vagrant from Siberia or North America.
