Download or read book Encyclopedia of Wicca Witchcraft written by Raven Grimassi and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2000 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grimassi has written extensively about Wicca, and Llewellyn specializes in books sympathetic to occult ways, so the combination is pretty predictable. He describes not only the usual magic practices, but also the religious and spiritual aspects of what believers say is inherited ancient European wisdom and scoffers say is made-up, new-age nonsense. Download or read book How to Make a Bird written by Meg McKinlay and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To make a bird, you'll need hundreds of tiny, hollow bones, so light you can barely feel them on your palm, so light they can float on air. Next you'll need feathers, for warmth and lift. There will be more besides - perhaps shells and stones for last touches - but what will finally make your bird tremble with dreams of open sky and soaring flight? This picture book shows how even the smallest of things, combined with wonder and a steady heart, can transform into works of magic.
Download or read book Of a Feather written by Scott Weidensaul and published by HMH. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Audubon: A quirky, “lively and illuminating” account of bird-watching’s history, including “rivalries, controversies, [and] bad behavior” (The Washington Post Book World). From the moment Europeans arrived in North America, they were awestruck by a continent awash with birds—great flocks of wild pigeons, prairies teeming with grouse, woodlands alive with brilliantly colored songbirds. Of a Feather traces the colorful origins of American birding: the frontier ornithologists who collected eggs between border skirmishes; the society matrons who organized the first effective conservation movement; and the luminaries with checkered pasts, such as Alexander Wilson (a convicted blackmailer) and the endlessly self-mythologizing John James Audubon. Naturalist Scott Weidensaul also recounts the explosive growth of modern birding that began when an awkward schoolteacher named Roger Tory Peterson published A Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. Today, birding counts iPod-wearing teens and obsessive “listers” among its tens of millions of participants, making what was once an eccentric hobby into something so completely mainstream it’s now (almost) cool. This compulsively readable popular history will surely find a roost on every birder’s shelf. “Weidensaul is a charming guide. . . . You don’t have to be a birder to enjoy this look at one of today’s fastest-growing (and increasingly competitive) hobbies.” —The Arizona Republic

Book excerpt: This unusual and richly-illustrated book is the story of the relationship between the Nage people of eastern Indonesia and the birds alongside which they co-exist. Based on fieldwork carried out over a period of some fifteen years, it aims for a total view of how a human community interacts with another zoological class, giving birds a chosen place in human ideas and social practice. As well as a fascinating ornithological study of Indonesian bird life, Nage Birds offers a much-needed critique of current theoretical argument on how non-Western societies categorize and evaluate different species and modes of being.

Download or read book Shakespeare s Other Lives written by Maurice J. O’Sullivan, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations scholars have labored scrupulously to try to separate the facts of William Shakespeare's life from the myths that have entangled them. However, those who have written fictions about the bard have operated under no such constraints. They offer solutions to the identities of W.H. and the Dark Lady, suggest Shakespeare's role in the shaping of the King James Bible, and trace his relationships with Sir Thomas Lucy, Francis Bacon, Elizabeth I, Kit Marlowe and Ben Jonson. And they speculate endlessly about Shakespeare's pets and poaching, his sources and inspiration, his melancholy and death. From Alexandre Duval's Shakespeare (1804) to Anthony Burgess's "The Muse," this is an anthology of nineteen fictional depictions of Shakespeare. They include Edward H. Warren's account of Shakespeare playing the stock market on Wall Street (with the Three Weird Sisters making stock predictions near a blast furnace in New Jersey), Leon Rooke's vivid memoir of the Bard's dog, and the works of such notables as George Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling and Edward Bond are included.

Download or read book Perspectives on the Bird s Head of Irian Jaya Indonesia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya has long been an area neglected by New Guinea Studies. Only in the late seventies, interest began to focus more intensively on this scientifically important border area between Austronesian and Papuan languages and cultures. In the early nineties, this led to the creation in The Netherlands of the Irian Jaya Studies programme ISIR, which organizes and coordinates multi-disciplinary research on the Bird's Head Peninsula. Within this framework, study of the peninsula has reached a peak, with research being conducted in the area by scientists from different disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, (ethno)botany, demography, development administration, geology and linguistics. The diverse perspectives of these disciplines are subject to constant internal debate. Through ISIR and other research initiatives, there is a growing body of data on and insights into the various disciplines concerned with this fascinating area, with each discipline developing its own specific perspectives on the Bird's Head. These perspectives were presented during the First International Conference Perspectives on the Bird's Head of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, organized by ISIR in cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences LIPI (Jakarta) and the International Institute for Asian Studies ILAS (Leiden) and held at Leiden University, 13-17 October 1997. Researchers were informed on current perspectives in many disciplines to facilitate integration of findings into wider, interdisciplinary frameworks and to stimulate international debate within and between disciplines. As a result of the Conference, the forty-two contributions in these Proceedings present a wealth of recent developments from various disciplines in New Guinea Studies.
Download or read book Temperance Lloyd Hanged for Witchcraft 1682 written by B. Chris Nash and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles of Bideford were the last three women hanged in England as witches, in 1682. Why? Educated, thinking people sent them to the gallows. The man we know for the King James Bible legalized the hunting and killing of hundreds of his own subjects. Physicians, trained only in "Discourse," accused the natural healers of witchcraft. The women were declared guilty because, according to the Church, to deny witchcraft was to deny God; convicted on hearsay evidence; and executed to appease an angry mob. But who were they? This novel invites you between the lines of history to witness their lives and deaths. This historical novel questions accepted notions of Time. Perhaps Temperance is still with today's herbalists. What if those old men in the dark corner of every bar have been there forever? Are there still leaders living in the paranoid shadows of a personal trauma? Come, meet Temperance, Susannah and Mary. Then please remember them, "In the Hope of an End to Persecution and Intolerance," by signing a Petition to the U.K., Government to Pardon of Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles for the crimes they could not have committed.
