Book Bird Strike in Aviation

Download or read book Bird Strike in Aviation written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking Handbook Offers Detailed Research and Valuable Methodology to Address Dangerous and Costly Aviation Hazard Though annual damages from bird and bat collisions with aircraft have been estimated at $400 million in the United States and up to $1.2 billion in commercial aviation worldwide and despite numerous conferences and councils dedicated to the issue, very little has been published on this expensive and sometimes-lethal flying risk. Bird Strike in Aviation seeks to fill this gap, providing a comprehensive guide to preventing and minimizing damage caused by bird strike on aircraft. Based on a thorough and comprehensive examination of the subject, Dr. El-Sayed offers different approaches to reducing bird strikes, including detailed coverage of the three categories necessary for such reduction, namely, awareness/education, bird management (active and passive control), and aircraft design. In addition, the text discusses the importance of cooperation between airplanes, airports and air traffic authorities as well as testing methods necessary for certification of both aircraft frame and engine. Other notable features include: Statistics and analyses for bird strikes with both civil and military helicopters as well as military fixed wing aircrafts, including annual costs, critical flight altitudes, critical parts of aircraft, distance from air base and specifics of date and timing Thorough review and analysis all fatal bird strike accidents and most non-fatal accidents since 1905, the first book to provide such a reference The use of numerical methods in analyzing historic data (ex. probability functions, finite element methods for analyzing impact on aircraft structure, experimental measurement technique for displacement, vibration, component distortion, etc.) Instruction on identification of bird species (using visual, microscopic, and DNA evidence) and details of bird migration to aid air traffic control in avoiding scenarios likely to result in collision With its wealth of statistical data, innovative research, and practical suggestions, Bird Strike in Aviation will prove a vital resource for researchers, engineers and graduate students in aerospace engineering/manufacturing or ornithology, as well as for military and civilian pilots and flight crew or professionals in aviation authorities and air traffic control.

Book A Heuristic Risk Assessment Technique for Birdstrike Management at Airports

Download or read book A Heuristic Risk Assessment Technique for Birdstrike Management at Airports written by John Allan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collisions between birds and aircraft (birdstrikes) have caused the loss of at least 88 aircraft and 243 lives in world civil aviation. Conservative estimates suggest that more routine damage and delays following birdstrikes cost the industry and its insurers US$1.21.5 billion per year. The majority of strikes happen close to airports and most countries have regulations that require airport managers to control the birdstrike risk on their property. Birdstrike prevention has, however, lagged behind other aspects of flight safety in the development and implementation of risk assessment protocols, possibly because of the inherent difficulty in quantifying the variability in the populations and behavior of the various bird species involved. This article presents a technique that uses both national and airport-specific data to evaluate risk by creating a simple probability-timesseverity matrix. It uses the frequency of strikes reported for different bird species at a given airport over the preceding five years as a measure of strike probability, and the proportion of strikes with each species that result in damage to aircraft, in the national birdstrike database, as a measure of likely severity. Action thresholds for risk levels for particular bird species are then defined, above which the airport should take action to reduce the risk further. The assessment is designed for airports where the reporting and collation of birdstrike events is reasonably consistent over time and where a bird hazard management program of some sort is already in place. This risk assessment is designed to measure risk to the airport as a business rather than risk to the traveling passenger individually. It therefore takes no account of aircraft movement rate in the calculations and is aimed at minimizing the number of damaging incidents rather than concentrating on catastrophic events. Once set up at an airport, the technique is simple to implement for nonexperts, and it allows managers to focus bird control resources on the species causing the greatest risk, hence maximizing the return on investment. This protocol is now being successfully used at major airports in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world.

Book Bird Hazard in Aviation

Download or read book Bird Hazard in Aviation written by Rashid Ahmed and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now honestly think about it my reading friends, who out there really doesn't love reading great rhyming poems about diverse subjects such as faith, fantasy and not to mention even fiction. I know that I do and that is why I have written this here book, Intricate emotion! This is my first of several books that I will write for Authorhouse, and yes I anxiously await and look forward to each book that I write! I want to thank you so very much for purchasing this book and may it pleasure you according to the intensity of the merits of euphoria! Much of Intricate Emotion is based on the key word, as I would call it....fidelity. to some of you, this may be a new word or a word that you are unclear of what the exact meaning actually is. I will give you a hand with the meaning. Fidelity is the quality or state of being faithful. Now the secondary definition is as follows.....The attention to accuracy in details. There you go. That explains it! But this book also covers the huge exciting subject matter of fantasy. Sounds cools, huh? But, what exactly does it mean. I suppose If I were to ask that question to 20 people, I might just get 20 different answers. According to my reputable source being this here old dictionary, it says accordingly that fantasy is the free play of creative imagination. So, let your spirits run wild! Never....I repeat....NEVER SHOULD YOU STOP DREAMING! I hope that you enjoy the fantasy based poems in this book and I hope that they may help to positively inspire EVEN you! the last item in Intricate Emotion would have to be the section non chronologically ordered about fiction. Now, I would estimate that most of you know what fiction is. Right? If not here goes with an explanation. Fiction is, well, nothing more than something created and or made up. There you have it. I hope these poems in this here book cause you to truly think, hit an emotional tie, or maybe even possibly cause or make you think about past events or to have nostalgia. I hope to enter into your world just so you may be able to enter into mine! I hope that Intricate Emotion is breathtaking, page turning with anticipation, and even joyful as well as creates a mental journey into intricacy. Enjoy the faith, and the fantasy and not to mention the fiction . Enjoy, and may God continue to guide and bless you. Sincerely – Brian Moilanen

Book Annotated Bibliography of Bird Hazards to Aircraft

Download or read book Annotated Bibliography of Bird Hazards to Aircraft written by Jeffrey Short and published by . This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, much progress has been made to address the hazards proposed by birds to aircraft by the military, the aerospace industry, and international working groups. In an effort to "jump start" those researchers with bird hazard problems, the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory has consolidated into a single document a significant portion of the literature on bird/aircraft interactions. This annotated bibliography of bird hazards to aircraft, termed ABBHA, is a compilation of citations with abstracts on a wide range of related topics such as bird strike tolerance engineering, bird hazard management and control, bird strike avoidance, and bird remains identification. ABBHA is available electronically and can be used with various word processing or bibliography management software. Computerization of the ABBHA reduces distribution costs, allows for frequent updates, and helps users to locate similar references on topics of interest through keyword "searches." The ABBHA citations included in this report include working papers published in the proceedings of the Bird Strike Committees of Europe, Canada, and the United States.

Download or read book Analysis of Bird Strikes Reported by European Airlines 1976 1980 written by Jonathan Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birdstrikes reported world-wide between 1976 and 1980 by European Airlines from 14 countries have been analysed. The analysis of over 7500 strikes includes the annual strike rate for each country, for aircraft types and airports, all based on aircraft movements. It also covers bird species and weights, part of aircraft struck, effect of strike, and cost. The paper shows that gulls were involved in over 40% of the incidents where the type of bird was known, and that only 1% of bird strikes involves birds of over 4 lbs. The major effects have been damage to over 330 engines and the loss of a Boeing 737 aircraft (value $4.5 million). Engineering costs are estimated to be about 16 million US dollars excluding the Boeing 737. (Author).

Book Development of Bird Hazard Reduction for Airport Operational Safety

Download or read book Development of Bird Hazard Reduction for Airport Operational Safety written by K. Reznick and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portland International Airport established its bird hazard reduction program in November 1978. At that time, bird control was a fairly new area to public airports in the U.S. Many concepts were available for hazard reduction, but there were not many tried-and-true programs in existence. PIA was recognized by the FAA as having one of the worst brid strike hazard problems in the country by strike reports that they received and by aircraft damage reported. The hazard reduction program produced dramatic results. A year's average total for strikes after the programs inception has been consistently less than an average 2-3 months total prior to its implementation. Aircraft damage has been almost nil for five years. Dealing with a bird strike hazard means dealing with a problem that will probably never be eradicated, but can definitely be controlled with proper identification of causes and solutions.
