Amongst these men was John MacGavock Grider and Elliott White Springs who both joined 85 Squadron to fly SE.5 fighters.During his service with the RFC and the RAF, Grider kept a record of his experiences from when he joined up until his untimely death in 1918, when he was shot down over the Western Front. Before his death, Grider had made a pact with Elliott White Springs that in the event of one of them dying, the other would complete their writings. Springs went on to write this book, an amalgamation of his own recollections and Griders diary and correspondence.War Birds records in detail the stresses of training and the terror and elation of failure and success during combats with the enemy the First World War. This unique edition of War Birds has been produced from a copy owned by another officer from 85 Squadron, Lieutenant Horace Fulford. Download or read book War Birds written by John MacGavock Grider and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "WAR BIRDS: DIARY OF AN UNKNOWN AVIATOR is the product of First Lieutenant John MacGavock Grider and Captain Elliott White Springs, two of the 210 cadets who joined the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army Signal Corps shortly after the United States entered World War I. The young men of that group, many of them university students or graduates, volunteered for immediate service abroad and were sent to England to be trained to fly with our allies and to fight with them until the United States could organize squadrons of our own. Grider and Springs, after completing their training, were assigned to Number 85 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, then commanded by William ("Billy") Bishop, in May 1918. Grider was killed in air combat some twenty miles behind enemy lines on 18 June 1918, but before he was shot down he gave his diary to Springs, his closest friend. Springs apparently added two months to the diary, then published it with Goerge H. Doran in 1926. It was also published serially in LIBERTY MAGAZINE and in a paperback edition in 1951. The text and illustrations reprinted here are from the original 1926 edition..."--Page 5, Foreword to the 1988 edition.

Book Soldiers Pay and War Birds Diary of an Unknown Aviator

Download or read book Soldiers Pay and War Birds Diary of an Unknown Aviator written by William Faulkner and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the reality of First World War aviators, this volume features William Faulkner’s astonishing first novel, Soldiers’ Pay, alongside the diary of an unknown veteran who died in action. William Faulkner’s Soldiers’ Pay was first published in 1926 and explores the life of a severely wounded aviator when he returns from war to his small hometown. The seminal novel presents the struggles of many soldiers following the First World War and gives insight into the men’s physical and psychological trauma. Accompanying Faulkner’s masterpiece is the diary of an American WWI aviator. The diary’s author served alongside the aviator in battle and published the text in honour of his comrade. John MacGavock Grider is commonly thought to be the diarist, with his memoirs being edited and published in 1926 by his friend and fellow aviator, Elliot White Springs. Detailing his life in battle from 20th September 1917 to late August 1918, Grider describes his flying experience and provides glimpses into a soldier’s off-duty life. This new edition of Soldiers' Pay and War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator is complete with two introductory poems by Thomas Hardy and Wilfred Owen. A remarkable volume, not to be missed by those interested in the First World War and American history.
