The objectives of the bird field surveys were to document the current composition, distribution and abundance of bird populations (primarily waterbirds), and the location of important habitat and staging areas (e.g., nesting colonies, major waterfowl moulting areas and migratory staging sites) in the production area. The Mackenzie Gas Project production area encompasses the three anchor fields (Taglu, Niglintgak and Parsons Lake) and the gathering pipeline system. ... The results of these surveys were used to assess potential project impacts and develop mitigation plans associated with the proposed pipeline project. ... Bird surveys in the production area were conducted during spring migration (late May to early June 2002), summer nesting (early June to mid-July 2002) and fall staging and migration (late July to mid-September in 2001). The survey effort, i.e., distance flown, focused primarily on aerial surveys for waterbirds (loons, grebes, geese, swans and ducks) and other large, conspicuous birds (hawks, eagles, falcons, jaegers, gulls, terns, owls, sandhill cranes and common ravens). Ground-based surveys were also used to ground-truth the results of aerial surveys and to provide data on nesting shorebirds and passerines. Ground-based surveys were limited in scope. Additional surveys are proposed as part of site-specific permit applications. Bird surveys were conducted on the outer Mackenzie Delta, in the Parsons Lake area, and along the proposed gathering pipeline corridor. Surveys of the outer Mackenzie Delta included coverage of the Taglu and Niglintgak leases and areas between and around those leases. Similarly, surveys of the Parsons Lake area included the lease and surrounding areas. Four types of surveys were used to document bird populations within the production area ...: spring aerial surveys, aerial transect surveys, ground-truthing surveys, breeding-bird plot surveys. The areas covered in the field sampling program were delineated, based on a project footprint that was under preliminary design at the time. Although some areas now deviate from the preferred route of the pipeline and the more recent placement of the facilities, the habitat types and areas inhabited by birds are still relevant for the impact assessment presented in the filed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)--Overview.

However, detailed descriptions of the techniques used and the rationale adopted are scattered in the literature, and the newcomer to bird census work or the experienced bird counter in search of a wider view, may well have difficulty in coming to grips with the subject as a whole. While not an end in itself, numerical and distributional census work is a fundamental part of many scientific and conservation studies, and one in which the application of given standards is vital if results are not to be distorted or applied in a misleading way. This book provides a concise guide to the various census techniques and to the opportunities and pitfalls which each entails. The common methods are described in detail, and illustrated through an abundance of diagrams showing examples of actual and theoretical census studies. Anyone with a bird census job to plan should be able to select the method best suited to the study at hand, and to apply it to best effect within the limits inherent in it and the constraints of the particular study. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology have for many years pioneered the collaboration of amateurs and professionals in various census studies.
