Book The Unity of the Proposition

Download or read book The Unity of the Proposition written by Richard Gaskin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Gaskin presents a work in the philosophy of language. He analyses what is distinctive about sentences and the propositions they express—what marks them off from mere lists of words and mere aggregates of word-meanings respectively. Since he identifies the world with all the true and false propositions, his account of the unity of the proposition has significant implications for our understanding of the nature of reality. He argues that the unity of the proposition is constituted by a certain infinitistic structure known in the tradition as 'Bradley's regress'. Usually, Bradley's regress has been regarded as vicious, but Gaskin argues that it is the metaphysical ground of the propositional unity, and gives us an important insight into the fundamental make-up of the world.

Book Thought and Reality

  • Author : Michael Dummett
  • Publisher : Clarendon Press

Download or read book Thought and Reality written by Michael Dummett and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2006-10-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short, lucid, rich book Michael Dummett sets out his views about some of the deepest questions in philosophy. The fundamental question of metaphysics is: what does reality consist of? To answer this, Dummett holds, it is necessary to say what kinds of fact obtain, and what constitutes their holding good. Facts correspond with true propositions, or true thoughts: when we know which propositions, or thoughts, in general, are true, we shall know what facts there are in general. Dummett considers the relation between metaphysics, our conception of the constitution of reality, and semantics, the theory that explains how statements are determined as true or as false in terms of their composition out of their constituent expressions. He investigates the two concepts on which the bridge that connects semantics to metaphysics rests, meaning and truth, and the role of justification in a theory of meaning. He then examines the special semantic and metaphysical issues that arise with relation to time and tense. On this basis Dummett puts forward his controversial view of reality as indeterminate: there may be no fact of the matter about whether an object does or does not have a given property. We have to relinquish our deep-held realist understanding of language, the illusion that we know what it is for any proposition that we can frame to be true independently of our having any means of recognizing its truth, and accept that truth depends on our capacity to apprehend it. Dummett concludes with a chapter about God.

Book Bird and Bough Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bird and Bough Classic Reprint written by John Burroughs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird and Bough Two or_-three years ago, a writer in one of the leading New York papers, commenting unfavorably upon some recent utterances of mine in one of the magazines, said that my readers could forgive me everything but my poetry. Now I am going to presume that some of them, at least, can forgive me even that. Have I not had letters from a few of them I do not say how many expressing a desire to see my verses collected in a volume? Could any poet withstand the appeal of even a few disinterested persons who expressed so reasonable and so modest a wish? At any rate, I shall let their suggestion overweigh the adverse Opinion of the hard-hearted critic just referred to. The one thing that I claim for my verses is that they keep a little closer to our wild nature to the birds, the owers, the seasons than most of our minor poetry has done. I do not believe the reader will find a hint of any Flora or Fauna but our own in my pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
