Download or read book Biological Control of the Ambermarked Birch Leafminer Profenusa Thomsoni Hymenoptera Tenthredinidae in Alberta written by Scott Cameron Digweed and published by Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holarctic ichneumonid parasitoid Lathrolestes luteolator (Gravenhorst) was found attacking Profenusa thomsoni (Konow), an introduced birch-leafmining sawfly, in Edmonton, Alberta. This appears to be a recently evolved host-parasitoid association in Alberta. Populations of L. luteolator increased dramatically relative to those of P. thomsoni as the sawfly declined from epidemic to low levels between 1992 and 1995, after a sustained outbreak beginning with its earliest local detection in the early 1970s. The only previously recorded host of L. luteolator that occurs in Alberta is the tenthredinid Caliroa cerasi L.; however, L. luteolator was not associated with a population of C. cerasi sampled during 1995. Sampling at several locations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario showed that L. luteolator is currently associated with populations of P. thomsoni throughout Canada. Further study is required to determine whether L. luteolator is involved in regulating populations of P. thomsoni at the present low levels observed in central Alberta.
Download or read book Biological Control Programmes in Canada 2001 2012 written by Peter G Mason and published by CABI. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is a world leader in biological control research. Reporting the status of biocontrol agents released in Canada over the last decade, this book presents case studies by target pest that evaluate the impact of biocontrol and recommend future priorities. In addition to a new chapter on future targets and an appendix listing established agents, this edition contains information of interest to a global audience, and chapters that address effects of invasive species and climate change.

Download or read book Tree and Shrub Insects of the Prairie Provinces written by W. G. H. Ives and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 600 species of insects and mites that feed on trees and shrubs in the prairie provinces are discussed in terms of their distribution, hosts, importance, life cycle and appearance and damage. There are approximately 1100 colour photographs; the life cycle and damage of major pest species are illustrated, and for less important species, primarily the larval stage is shown. Pests attacking coniferous hosts are separated from those attacking hardwoods, and each group is subdivided according to the kind of feeding damage and type of insect involved. An extensive bibliography is provided. In addition to a taxonomic index listing the order and family of each insect or mite, there is a diagnostic index listing the host species, feeding site of the pest, and species of insect or mite involved and an insect index.
Download or read book Costs and Threats of Invasive Species to Alberta s Natural Resources written by A. S. McClay and published by Alberta Public Affairs Bureau. This book was released on 2004 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review focusses on invasive species affecting forestry, provincial grazing land, aquatic & wetland environments, and natural ecosystems in Alberta. Based largely on examination of the literature, major invasive species are listed under the following categories: terrestrial plants; terrestrial vertebrates; terrestrial invertebrates; aquatic organisms, including fish, plants, insects, mollusks, & protozoan parasites of fish; and plant & wildlife diseases. For each species, information is included on its status, geographic distribution, habitat, and economic & ecological impact. The review also discusses pathways & sources of new introductions and potential threats of new introductions in each species category. The final chapter presents an overall evaluation of invasive species & their impacts, pathways, and future risks. It also notes knowledge gaps.
