Book Birational Geometry of Hypersurfaces

Download or read book Birational Geometry of Hypersurfaces written by Andreas Hochenegger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating from the School on Birational Geometry of Hypersurfaces, this volume focuses on the notion of (stable) rationality of projective varieties and, more specifically, hypersurfaces in projective spaces, and provides a large number of open questions, techniques and spectacular results. The aim of the school was to shed light on this vast area of research by concentrating on two main aspects: (1) Approaches focusing on (stable) rationality using deformation theory and Chow-theoretic tools like decomposition of the diagonal; (2) The connection between K3 surfaces, hyperkähler geometry and cubic fourfolds, which has both a Hodge-theoretic and a homological side. Featuring the beautiful lectures given at the school by Jean-Louis Colliot-Thélène, Daniel Huybrechts, Emanuele Macrì, and Claire Voisin, the volume also includes additional notes by János Kollár and an appendix by Andreas Hochenegger.

Book The Geometry of Cubic Hypersurfaces

Download or read book The Geometry of Cubic Hypersurfaces written by Daniel Huybrechts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cubic hypersurfaces are described by almost the simplest possible polynomial equations, yet their behaviour is rich enough to demonstrate many of the central challenges in algebraic geometry. With exercises and detailed references to the wider literature, this thorough text introduces cubic hypersurfaces and all the techniques needed to study them. The book starts by laying the foundations for the study of cubic hypersurfaces and of many other algebraic varieties, covering cohomology and Hodge theory of hypersurfaces, moduli spaces of those and Fano varieties of linear subspaces contained in hypersurfaces. The next three chapters examine the general machinery applied to cubic hypersurfaces of dimension two, three, and four. Finally, the author looks at cubic hypersurfaces from a categorical point of view and describes motivic features. Based on the author's lecture courses, this is an ideal text for graduate students as well as an invaluable reference for researchers in algebraic geometry.

Book Automorphisms in Birational and Affine Geometry

Download or read book Automorphisms in Birational and Affine Geometry written by Ivan Cheltsov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this volume is on the problem of describing the automorphism groups of affine and projective varieties, a classical subject in algebraic geometry where, in both cases, the automorphism group is often infinite dimensional. The collection covers a wide range of topics and is intended for researchers in the fields of classical algebraic geometry and birational geometry (Cremona groups) as well as affine geometry with an emphasis on algebraic group actions and automorphism groups. It presents original research and surveys and provides a valuable overview of the current state of the art in these topics. Bringing together specialists from projective, birational algebraic geometry and affine and complex algebraic geometry, including Mori theory and algebraic group actions, this book is the result of ensuing talks and discussions from the conference “Groups of Automorphisms in Birational and Affine Geometry” held in October 2012, at the CIRM, Levico Terme, Italy. The talks at the conference highlighted the close connections between the above-mentioned areas and promoted the exchange of knowledge and methods from adjacent fields.

Book Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties

Download or read book Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties written by Janos Kollár and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major discoveries of the past two decades in algebraic geometry is the realization that the theory of minimal models of surfaces can be generalized to higher dimensional varieties. This generalization, called the minimal model program, or Mori's program, has developed into a powerful tool with applications to diverse questions in algebraic geometry and beyond. This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the circle of ideas developed around the program, the prerequisites being only a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry. It will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in algebraic geometry and related fields.

Book Rationality of Varieties

Download or read book Rationality of Varieties written by Gavril Farkas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the latest progress on rationality questions in algebraic geometry. It discusses new developments such as universal triviality of the Chow group of zero cycles, various aspects of stable birationality, cubic and Fano fourfolds, rationality of moduli spaces and birational invariants of group actions on varieties, contributed by the foremost experts in their fields. The question of whether an algebraic variety can be parametrized by rational functions of as many variables as its dimension has a long history and played an important role in the history of algebraic geometry. Recent developments in algebraic geometry have made this question again a focal point of research and formed the impetus to organize a conference in the series of conferences on the island of Schiermonnikoog. The book follows in the tradition of earlier volumes, which originated from conferences on the islands Texel and Schiermonnikoog.

Book excerpt: We use methods from birational geometry to study M. Saito's Hodge filtration on the localization along a hypersurface. This filtration leads to a sequence of ideal sheaves, called Hodge ideals, the first of which is a multiplier ideal. We analyze their local and global properties, and use them for applications related to the singularities and Hodge theory of hypersurfaces and their complements.

  • ISBN : 0387226397
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Geometry of Schemes written by David Eisenbud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Book Weighted Projective Hypersurfaces with Extreme Invariants

Download or read book Weighted Projective Hypersurfaces with Extreme Invariants written by Louis Esser and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this dissertation is to study weighted projective hypersurfaces and their application to optimization problems in algebraic geometry. First, we generalize and strengthen several well-known results on the automorphisms of hypersurfaces due to Grothendieck-Lefschetz and Matsumura-Monsky to the weighted setting. Then, we construct special examples of weighted projective hypersurfaces with extreme properties. These are used to prove strong asymptotics on certain invariants from birational geometry as dimension increases. In particular, we show that the minimum volume of smooth varieties of general type approaches zero doubly exponentially with dimension; we also show that the index of mildly singular Calabi-Yau varieties can grow doubly exponentially with dimension. For several classes of varieties, we conjecture the optimal bounds on volume or index in every dimension; these conjectures are supported by low-dimensional evidence.

Book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties

Download or read book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties written by Mauro Beltrametti and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2009 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wide-ranging introduction to algebraic geometry along classical lines. It consists of lectures on topics in classical algebraic geometry, including the basic properties of projective algebraic varieties, linear systems of hypersurfaces, algebraic curves (with special emphasis on rational curves), linear series on algebraic curves, Cremona transformations, rational surfaces, and notable examples of special varieties like the Segre, Grassmann, and Veronese varieties. An integral part and special feature of the presentation is the inclusion of many exercises, not easy to find in the literature and almost all with complete solutions. The text is aimed at students in the last two years of an undergraduate program in mathematics. It contains some rather advanced topics suitable for specialized courses at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, as well as interesting topics for a senior thesis. The prerequisites have been deliberately limited to basic elements of projective geometry and abstract algebra. Thus, for example, some knowledge of the geometry of subspaces and properties of fields is assumed. The book will be welcomed by teachers and students of algebraic geometry who are seeking a clear and panoramic path leading from the basic facts about linear subspaces, conics and quadrics to a systematic discussion of classical algebraic varieties and the tools needed to study them. The text provides a solid foundation for approaching more advanced and abstract literature.

Book On the Geometry of Some Special Projective Varieties

Download or read book On the Geometry of Some Special Projective Varieties written by Francesco Russo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an introduction to both classical and modern techniques in projective algebraic geometry, this monograph treats the geometrical properties of varieties embedded in projective spaces, their secant and tangent lines, the behavior of tangent linear spaces, the algebro-geometric and topological obstructions to their embedding into smaller projective spaces, and the classification of extremal cases. It also provides a solution of Hartshorne’s Conjecture on Complete Intersections for the class of quadratic manifolds and new short proofs of previously known results, using the modern tools of Mori Theory and of rationally connected manifolds. The new approach to some of the problems considered can be resumed in the principle that, instead of studying a special embedded manifold uniruled by lines, one passes to analyze the original geometrical property on the manifold of lines passing through a general point and contained in the manifold. Once this embedded manifold, usually of lower codimension, is classified, one tries to reconstruct the original manifold, following a principle appearing also in other areas of geometry such as projective differential geometry or complex geometry.
