Book Bioterrorism Reader

Download or read book Bioterrorism Reader written by Arthur P. Rogers and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthrax murders in the US and discoveries of biological weapon plans in Africa served as a wake-up call (too late as usual) that biological weapons might actually be a weapon of mass destruction. Their small size but highly deadly nature adds to the fear factor. The reality of this potential danger to the US population found both the federal government as well as state government clueless. This new book presents analyses of the actions planned or already carried out in the battle against the threat of bioterrorism, and offers frank analyses of our current state of preparedness or lack thereof.

Book Bracing for Armageddon

Download or read book Bracing for Armageddon written by William R. Clark and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Clark offers a vividly written primer for the general reader, shedding light on the science behind potential bioterrorist attacks and revealing what could happen, what is likely to happen, and what almost certainly will not happen. Clark reviews a host of bioterrorist threats (from agroterrorism to a poisoning of the water supply) and examines not only the worst-case menace of genetically engineered pathogens, but also the lethal agents on the CDC's official bioterrorism list. He shows that a successful bioterrorism attack is exceedingly unlikely and asks if the $40 billion the United States has dedicated to the defense against bioterrorism has really been well spent?

Book Law and Bioterrorism

Download or read book Law and Bioterrorism written by Victoria Sutton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and Bioterrorism includes cases, statutes, and materials which address the legal issues that arise in the context of bioterrorism, national security, and public safety. Sutton begins with an examination of the history of bioterrorism as a domestic crime and includes cases which have been decided under new federal criminal statutes specifically constructed to address the threat of bioterrorism. Next, there is an examination of the issues of federalism in a public health context and the problems with the current federal government intragovernmental organization. Sutton then looks at the role of the state in public health law as well as at civil rights interests in a biological attack context. Quarantine laws are examined, and a proposed model for a public health emergency powers act is considered. Finally, the conclusion considers the future and the possibility of a new legal framework for addressing bioterrorism threats and national security.

Book excerpt: ?Bioterrorism should appeal to a wide range of academics and practitioners around the world?and it should be required reading in the Executive and Legislative branches of the US government.??Dean A. Wilkening, Stanford UniversityEspecially since the anthrax attacks of 2001, the issue of bioterrorism has been controversial: Are governments underestimating the potential hazard of biological toxins, as some claim, or is the danger in fact exaggerated? What are the policy options for dealing with such a complex threat? The authors of this book offer a reasoned assessment of the issues at the core of the debates.Identifying a high level of uncertainty as a key characteristic of the bioterrorism threat, the authors examine the legacies of the secret state biowarfare programs of the previous century, analyze academic and political controversies about current dangers, and consider the impact of rapid scientific and technological change on the development of future threats. In the process, they provide new insight into the broader question of risk management and the role of public and private actors in international security relations.Andreas Wenger is professor of international security policy and director of the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). Book Countering Bioterrorism

Download or read book Countering Bioterrorism written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-01-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attacks of September 11 and the release of anthrax spores revealed enormous vulnerabilities in the U.S. public-health infrastructure and suggested similar vulnerabilities in the agricultural infrastructure as well. The traditional public health response-surveillance (intelligence), prevention, detection, response, recovery, and attribution-is the paradigm for the national response not only to all forms of terrorism but also to emerging infectious diseases. Thus, investments in research on bioterrorism will have enormous potential for application in the detection, prevention, and treatment of emerging infectious diseases that also are unpredictable and against which we must be prepared. The deciphering of the human genome sequence and the complete elucidation of numerous pathogen genomes, our rapidly increasing understanding of the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and of immune responses, and new strategies for designing drugs and vaccines all offer unprecedented opportunities to use science to counter bioterrorist threats. But these same developments also allow science to be misused to create new agents of mass destruction. Hence the effort to confront bioterrorism must be a global one. Countering Bioterrorism makes the following recommendations: Recommendation 1: All agencies with responsibility for homeland security should work together to establish stronger and more meaningful working ties between the intelligence, S&T, and public health communities. Recommendation 2: Federal agencies should work cooperatively and in collaboration with industry to develop and evaluate rapid, sensitive, and specific early-detection technologies. Recommendation 3: Create a global network for detection and surveillance, making use of computerized methods for real-time reporting and analysis to rapidly detect new patterns of disease locally, nationally, and ultimately- internationally. The use of high-throughput methodologies that are being increasingly utilized in modern biological research should be an important component of this expanded and highly automated surveillance strategy. Recommendation 4: Use knowledge of complex biological patterns and high-throughput laboratory automation to classify and diagnose infections in patients in primary care settings. Recommendation 5: USDA should create an agency for control and prevention of plant disease. This agency should have the capabilities necessary to deal effectively with biothreats.

Book Portable Chemical Sensors

  • Author : Dimitrios P. Nikolelis
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-02-02
  • ISBN : 9400728727
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Portable Chemical Sensors written by Dimitrios P. Nikolelis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biosensors are making a large impact in environmental, food, biomedical, and other applications. In comparison to standard analytical detection methods, such as minimal sample preparation and handling, they offer advantages including real time detection, rapid detection of the analytes of concern, use of non-skilled personnel, and portability. The aim of this book is to focus on research related to the rapid detection of agents and weapons of bioterrorism and provide a comprehensive review of the research topics most pertinent to advancing devices applicable to the rapid real-time detection of toxicants such as microbes, pathogens, toxins, or nerve gases. The ongoing war on terrorism and the rising security concerns are driving the need for newer faster biosensors against bio-warfare agents for both military and civil defence applications. The volume brings together contributions from the most eminent international researchers in the field, covering various aspects of work not so far published in any scientific journal and often going beyond the “state of art “ . Readers of these review articles will learn new technological schemes that can lead to the construction of devices that will minimize the risk of bio-terrorism.
