Download or read book Compendium of Trace Metals and Marine Biota written by Ronald Eisler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each book has two main goals1. Determine baseline concentrations of metals and metalloids in tissues of representative field populations of estuarine coastal, and open ocean organisms (Book 1:algae and macrophytes, protists, sponges, coelenterates, molluscs, crustaceans, insects, chaetognaths, annelids, echinoderms, and tunicates) (Book 2: elasmobranchs, fishes, reptiles, birds, mammals) and their significance to organism health and to the health of their consumers.2. Synthesize existing information on biological, chemical, and physical factors known to modify uptake, retention, and translocation of each element under field and laboratory conditions. Recognition of the importance of these modifiers and their accompanying interactions is essential to the understanding of metals kinetics in marine systems and to the interpretation of baseline residue data. - Synthesizes existing information on biological, chemical, and physical factors known to modify uptake, retention, and translocation of each element - Aids understanding of metals kinetics in marine systems - Allows the interpretation of baseline residue data
Download or read book River Biota written by Peter P. Calow and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with all ecosystems, river systems involve a complex interaction of a rich diversity of micro-organisms, plants and animals with their physical and chemical environment. The river habitat presents unique problems for organisms exposed to unidirectional currents, seasonal variation in flow, and disturbance due to pollution and other human interference. The book starts with a description of the taxa, their adaptations and their ecologies, followed by chapters describing the ecosystem processes in terms of trophic interactions and the key production processes related to photosynthesis and decomposition. A major chapter then considers the principles, practices and problems associated with making reliable observations on river organisms, leading to final chapters investigating how river biota are impacted by human activity and how, in turn, they can be used as indicators of these effects in river-management programmes.

Download or read book Marine Macrophytes as Foundation Species written by Emil Olafsson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine macrophytes (macroalgae, seagrasses, and mangroves) comprise thousands of species distributed in shallow water areas along the world’s coastlines. They play a key role in marine ecosystems regarding biodiversity and energy flow. A large proportion of macrophyte species can be characterised as ecosystem engineers—organisms that directly or indirectly affect the availability of resources to other species by modifying, maintaining, and creating habitats. This book is divided into three main themes: • Marine macroalgae and seagrasses as sources of biodiversity gives an overview of the diversity of the main organisms associated with macrophytes, and their functional role and interactions within their hosts. • Primary and secondary production of Macrophytes synthesizes research on food web structures derived from/or associated with, macrophytes and the transfer of macrophytic primary and secondary production from one ecosystem to another. • Threats to macrophytic ecosystem engineers addresses human-induced effects including eutrophication, physical destruction, invasive species, and global warming. The book is among the first one to concentrate on the value of macrophytes for the well-being of marine habitats. The book is aimed at academics but may be useful for students, policy makers, and laymen alike.
Download or read book Physiological Responses of Marine Biota to Pollutants written by John F Vernberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Responses of Marine Biota to Pollutants contains the proceedings of a symposium entitled ""Pollution and Physiology of Marine Organisms"" held in Connecticut in November 1975. It explores the influence of pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), petroleum products, and heavy metals on the physiology of marine species, such as fish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, and mussels. More specifically, it looks at the functional mechanisms underlying the response of marine organisms to pollutants that act either alone or in combination with other pollutants and/or ""normal"" environmental factors. Comprised of five parts encompassing 27 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of pesticides and PCBs and their effects on marine organisms, including those of malathion on the development of crabs and of PCBs on feral fish. It proceeds with a discussion of heavy metals, such as methylmercury, selenium, cadmium and cadmium chloride, and chromium; and an explanation of how petroleum hydrocarbons affect estuarine fish embryos, pink salmon fry, marine fish, Mytilus californianus, Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, and plankton. The reader is also introduced to the synergistic effects of exposure to temperature and chlorine on young-of-the-year estuarine fishes, the effects of DDT and mirex singly and in concert on Adinia xenica, the role of temperature in the physiology of bivalves, physiological responses of crustacean larvae to temperature, use of the heterotrophic potential assay as an indicator of environmental quality, and how the mud crab (Rhithropanopeus harrisii) is affected by juvenile hormone mimics. Marine scientists, ecologists, and students will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 20 years after the ban of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides, pesticides continue to be detected in air, rain, soil, surface water, bed sediment, and aquatic and terrestrial biota throughout the world. Recent research suggests that low levels of some of these pesticides may have the potential to affect the development, reproduction,

Book excerpt: This landmark scientific reference for scientists, researchers, and students of marine biology tackles the monumental task of taking a complete biodiversity inventory of the Gulf of Mexico with full biotic and biogeographic information. Presenting a comprehensive summary of knowledge of Gulf biota through 2004, the book includes seventy-seven chapters, which list more than fifteen thousand species in thirty-eight phyla or divisions and were written by 138 authors from seventy-one institutions in fourteen countries. This first volume of Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota, a multivolumed set edited by John W. Tunnell Jr., Darryl L. Felder, and Sylvia A. Earle, provides information on each species' habitat, biology, and geographic range, along with full references and a narrative introduction to the group, which opens each chapter.
