Book Application of Analytical Techniques to Petroleum Systems

Download or read book Application of Analytical Techniques to Petroleum Systems written by P. Dowey and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutting-edge techniques have always been utilized in petroleum exploration and production to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. The demand for petroleum in the form of oil and gas is expected to increase for electricity production, transport and chemical production, largely driven by an increase in energy consumption in the developing world. Innovations in analytical methods will continue to play a key role in the industry moving forwards as society shifts towards lower carbon energy systems and more advantaged oil and gas resources are targeted. This volume brings together new analytical approaches and describes how they can be applied to the study of petroleum systems. The papers within this volume cover a wide range of topics and case studies, in the fields of fluid and isotope geochemistry, organic geochemistry, imaging and sediment provenance. The work illustrates how the current, state-of-the-art technology can be effectively utilised to address ongoing challenges in petroleum geoscience.

Book Chemostratigraphy of the Austin Chalk and Upper Eagle Ford Shale South Central TX

Download or read book Chemostratigraphy of the Austin Chalk and Upper Eagle Ford Shale South Central TX written by Zain Abdi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single drill core from La Salle, TX was analyzed for its chemical composition and percent concentration of both major and trace elements in order to understand depositional environments and local tectonic activity of the Balcones Fault Zone. The drill core contained the entirety of the Austin Chalk and the upper portion of the Upper Eagle Ford Shale. Samples were taken from 47 boxes at 3 inch intervals which accumulated in a total of 1,680 samples. Each sample was analyzed using a handheld x-ray fluorescence instrument which provided quantitative analysis of the following elements: Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, S, Si, Ti, and V. Furthermore, x-ray diffraction analysis was conducted at every 7 feet of the Austin Chalk and every 4 feet of the Upper Eagle Ford Shale. Calcium values ranged from 5% to 40% with the former values arising from the Upper Eagle Ford Shale and the latter values coming from the Austin Chalk. Sulfur percent composition ranged from 0%-20% and had similar trends as Magnesium which had values from 0.04% to 4.8%. The Austin Chalk contained great values of pyrite, illite, quartz, calcite, and dolomite. Trace element concentrations suggest that the depositional environment had periods of anoxic or euxinic events. Mineralogical and major elemental geochemistry suggests a carbonate rich Austin Chalk and calcareous Eagle Ford Shale.

Book Biostratigraphy of Jonah Quadrangle Williamson County Texas

Download or read book Biostratigraphy of Jonah Quadrangle Williamson County Texas written by Edward Marks and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a zonation of the Austin chalk and the Burditt marl, divisions of the Austin group in the Jonah quadrangle, Williamson County, Texas. The Austin chalk consists of the Inoceramus subquadratus Schlüter faunizone, Gryphaea wratheri Stephenson faunizone, Inoceramus undulatoplicatus Roemer faunizone, Hemiaster texanus Roemer faunizone, Exogyra laeviuscula Roemer faunizone, and the Exogyra tigrina Stephenson epibole. The Burditt marl contains the Ostrea centerensis Stephenson faunizone. The Austin-Taylor contact has been traced from the southeastern to the northeastern corner of the area. The relations of the Taylor marl and some of the Terrace gravels are discussed. The outcrop, lithology, and paleontology of the Eagle Ford shale, which underlies the Austin group, are also included.

Book U Pb Geochronology of the Late Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale Texas

Download or read book U Pb Geochronology of the Late Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale Texas written by John Donald Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eagle Ford Shale and equivalent Boquillas Formation (Late Cretaceous) contain abundant volcanic ash beds of varying thickness. These ash beds represent a unique facies that displays a range of sedimentary structures, bed continuity, and diagenetic alteration. They are prominent not only in West Texas outcrops, but also in the subsurface of South Texas where hydrocarbon production is actively occurring. The ash beds have the potential to be used for stratigraphic correlation for understanding early diagenesis and -- most importantly -- for obtaining high-resolution geochronology, which can then be used for defining depositional rates and chronostratigraphy. Study of the ash beds was conducted at outcrops along U.S. 90, west of Comstock, Texas, the subsurface in Atascosa and Karnes County, and at a construction site in South Austin. Bed thicknesses range from 0.1-33 cm and were collected throughout the entirety of the Eagle Ford succession. Mineral separation yielded abundant non-detrital zircons for U-Pb dating. Dating was conducted using LA-ICP-MS at The University of Texas at Austin, to attain a base level understanding of the age range for the Eagle Ford. High-resolution ages for the base and top of the Eagle Ford were obtained, in addition to radioisotopically defining the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary within the section. U-Pb ages for the Eagle Ford Shale range from Early Cenomanian to Late-Coniacian near Comstock, Mid-Cenomanian to the Turonian-Coniacian boundary in the subsurface, and Early Cenomanian to Late Turonian in Austin area. These findings contrast with many of the regional biostratigraphic studies across the Eagle Ford and indicate a more prolonged period of Eagle Ford deposition than previously observed.
