Book Bioresorbable Plates and Screws in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Download or read book Bioresorbable Plates and Screws in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery written by Jagveer Singh Saluja and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As lifestyles are changing and faster modes of transportation are available, these have lead to an increase in the number of maxillofacial injuries all over the world, thereby necessitating better methods and advancements in treatment modalities in maxillofacial region. Since face is the most prominent part of the body, fractures of the facio-maxillary skeleton is a common finding with most of the road traffic accidents, industrial accidents and altercations. Rigid internal fixation with various bioresorbable materials has recently been studied by pioneers in the field and reported very high success rates with bioresorbable plates and screws. Biocompatible and bioresorbable poly-alpha-hydroxyl acid derivatives namely poly-L-lactide (PLLA), poly glycolide (PGA) and polydioxanone have been proposed as potential orthopedic repair materials. A new technologic advancement in biomaterials research has provided a copolymer of poly-L-Lactic acid and glycolic acid (PLLA-PGA) in the field of craniofacial surgery. The strength, malleability and resorption profile can be further favourably tailored by incorporation of caprolactone (CL), dioxanone (DI) or trimethylene carbonate (TMC).

Book Pediatric Maxillofacial Trauma

Download or read book Pediatric Maxillofacial Trauma written by George M. Kushner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assist the reader in navigating the potentially complex decision-making process involved in selecting the most appropriate intervention for each particular scenario that may be encountered by the practitioner or surgeon in the growing patient with facial trauma. Among the topics covered are the initial management of both soft and bony trauma, including different types of fracture, as well as the management of complications and revision surgery. The discerning practitioner will learn how to provide the appropriate intervention at the appropriate time, by taking into account skeletal growth when matching techniques to the injuries more common in the skeletally immature patient. It is also emphasized that in some cases, no intervention is advisable owing to the possibility of damaging growth centers or introducing additional scar tissue that may impede future growth. Pediatric Maxillofacial Trauma will provide key knowledge for surgeons treating growing patients, ensuring that their decisions to operate or delay intervention are evidence based.

Book Applications of Biomedical Engineering in Dentistry

Download or read book Applications of Biomedical Engineering in Dentistry written by Lobat Tayebi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a valuable overview of recent advances in biomedical engineering, as applied to the modern dentistry. It begins by studying the biomaterials in dentistry, and materials used intraoperatively during oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. Next, it considers the subjects in which biomedical engineers can be influential, such as 3-dimensional (3D) imaging, laser and photobiomodulation, surface modification of dental implants, and bioreactors. Hard and soft tissue engineerings in dentistry are discussed, and some specific and essential methods such as 3D-printing are elaborated. Presenting particular clinical functions of regenerative dentistry and tissue engineering in treatment of oral and maxillofacial soft tissues is the subject of a separate chapter. Challenges in the rehabilitation handling of large and localized oral and maxillofacial defects is a severe issue in dentistry, which are considered to understand how bioengineers help with treatment methods in this regard. Recent advances in nanodentistry is discussed followed by a chapter on the applications of stem cell-encapsulated hydrogel in dentistry.Periodontal regeneration is a challenging issue in dentistry, and thus, is going to be considered separately to understand the efforts and achievements of tissue engineers in this matter. Oral mucosa grafting is a practical approach in engineering and treatment of tissues in ophthalmology, which is the subject of another chapter. Microfluidic approaches became more popular in biomedical engineering during the last decade; hence, one chapter focuses on the advanced topic of microfluidics technologies using oral factors as saliva-based studies. Injectable gels in endodontics is a new theme in dentistry that bioengineering skills can advance its development, specifically by producing clinically safe and effective gels with regeneration and antibacterial properties. Engineered products often need to be tested in vivo before being clinical in dentistry; thus, one chapter is dedicated to reviewing applicable animal models in dental research. The last chapter covers the progress on the whole tooth bioengineering as a valuable and ultimate goal of many dental researchers. Offers readers an interdisciplinary approach that relates biomedical engineering and restorative dentistry Discusses recent technological achievements in engineering with applications in dentistry Provides useful tool to dental companies for future product planning, specifically to biomedical engineers engaged in dental research

Book Development of Biodegradable Implants for Use in Maxillofacial Surgery

Download or read book Development of Biodegradable Implants for Use in Maxillofacial Surgery written by Benjamin S. Kelley and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxillofacial injury requiring open or closed reduction is a frequent result of modern military conflicts. Traditional reduction methodologies involve the use of metallic plates, screws, and wires, along with their associated problems. Therefore, biodegradable fixation appliances, which should provide initial rigidity but then gradually weaken so that newly-forming bone is exercised, have been investigated. COmposite plates made from poly (DL-lactide) and reinforced with calcium metaphosphate (CMP) fibers are very strong, but they weaken rapidly when exposed to an aqueous environment because of a disruption of the interface between the reinforcing fibers and polymer matrix. Coating the plates with a hydrophobic, biodegradable film slows this weakening, but more protection is required. Smaller-diameter fibers and better fiber wetting by the matrix also result in more stable composites, but even nonbiodegradable polymers reinforced with CMP fibers rapidly lose strength in saline. Methods to protect the fiber/polymer interface from fluid attack, such as fiber coatings, alternative bioresorbable glasses, and improved composite fabrication techniques have been investigated. Keywords: Resorbable implants; Boneplate; Fracture fixation; Calcium metaphosphate. (AW).
