However, irrespective of more than 20 years research in this field, bioremediation of PAH-contaminated sites remains challenging because of the microbe-, contaminant- and soil-associated limitations existing at field-scale such as: (a) failure of the microbes to remove carcinogenic HMW PAHs compounds that are generally less bioavailable, (b) lack of nutrients in the contaminated soils that affect the survival of the inoculated microbes, (c) inability of the identified microbes to tolerate diverse physical settings (for instance, wide ranging pH), and (d) microbial inhibition due to the presence of co-contaminants like heavy metals.
