One such form of energy source is Biomass. Biomass is a renewable raw material generated by living organisms and found in agricultural waste in large quantities. The three main components of biomass are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The first two components are sugar polymers, being cellulosic ethanol a desirable goal for converting those. The truth is that the production of cellulosic ethanol has never passed the pilot unit phase, due to the lack of economic competitiveness. New ways must be found to make this viable. From the latest finding of the biomass structure, new biomass processing pathways are being advanced, constituting new biorefinery models, which will make it possible to obtain cellulosic ethanol concomitant with the production of different bioproducts such as xylitol, oligosaccharides, antioxidants and analogues to carbon fiber, etc. Lipid rich biomass is the source of foods oils. With population growth, the amounts of waste volume will increase. It is important to improve the processes of valorization of these residues, through their conversion into alcoholic esters of fatty acids, which can be used as fuel or in other domestic and industrial applications. This volume reviews advances and innovative applications in this field. It will encourage the use of new works and even unpublished works to use biomass or its components for the production of bioproducts and biofuels.

The production of alcoholic beverages using microbes was the first major industrialized process. The technology developed for large-scale brewing was adapted for other anaerobic processes such as acetone and butanol in the early 1900s. With the discovery of penicillins, rapid developments were made in the technology of submerged culture fermentation of aerobic microorganisms under controlled conditions. The advancements in microbiology and process biochemistry improved our ability to harness the potential of microorganisms through improved bioprocessing methods to manufacture new products with economic viability. Microbial derived bioproducts have been gaining importance in the food, pharmaceutical, textile, leather, cosmetic and chemical industries, and most important among them are therapeutic proteins and peptides, enzymes, antigens, vaccines, antibiotics, drugs, etc.Not all microbial production processes involve culture of the organism in liquid medium. Instead, the organism can be grown on the surface of a solid substrate. Solid substrate (or solid state) fermentation (SSF) is an established traditional technology in many countries, producing edible mushrooms, fungal- fermented foods and soy sauce. Before the development of processes in liquid culture, citric acid and some microbial enzymes were produced by SSF. Carbon composting is also a form of SSF.

This book is a compilation of the papers and posters presented at the Conference. The Conference was sponsored, in part, by the U.S. pharmaceutical companies including National Science Foundation and Ortho Pharmaceutical, Merck, Genentech, Smith Kline Beecham and ABEe. Its purpose was to promote information exchange between Japanese and U.S. researchers, primarily academics, in biotechnology and to seek ways to carry out collaborative research in biotechnology. The honorary chairmen of the Conference were Professor H. Okada and me. The formal program was organized by Professors 1. Bailey and T. Yoshida. Twelve invited formal presentations were given from each side. In addition, both sides were invited to bring along five observers to the Conference who were encouraged to prepare poster presentations on their research. Paper abstracts plus bibliographies were exchanged prior to the Conference in order to promote maximum technical interaction between the participants.
