Book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology written by Tracey Rouault and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on iron-sulfur proteins includes chapters that describe the initial discovery of iron-sulfur proteins in the 1960s to elucidation of the roles of iron sulfur clusters as prosthetic groups of enzymes, such as the citric acid cycle enzyme, aconitase, and numerous other proteins, ranging from nitrogenase to DNA repair proteins. The capacity of iron sulfur clusters to accept and delocalize single electrons is explained by basic chemical principles, which illustrate why iron sulfur proteins are uniquely suitable for electron transport and other activities. Techniques used for detection and stabilization of iron-sulfur clusters, including EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, are discussed because they are important for characterizing unrecognized and elusive iron sulfur proteins. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures. Numerous chapters discuss how microbes, plants, and animals synthesize these complex prosthetic groups, and why it is important to understand the chemistry and biogenesis of iron sulfur proteins. In addition to their vital importance in mitochondrial respiration, numerous iron sulfur proteins are important in maintenance of DNA integrity. Multiple rare human diseases with different clinical presentations are caused by mutations of genes in the iron sulfur cluster biogenesis pathway. Understanding iron sulfur proteins is important for understanding a rapidly expanding group of metabolic pathways important in all kingdoms of life, and for understanding processes ranging from nitrogen fixation to human disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Fe- and Cu-Protein Symposium was held on December 15-18, 1975 at the East West Center-University of Hawaii and was sponsored by the United States-Japan Cooperative Science Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It was recognized by the organizers of the symposium that metalloproteins are very important in the field of health science and a subject worthy of discussion by experts from the United States, Japan and Europe. The meeting was restricted to Fe- and Cu-proteins but this is still a very broad subject matter and therefore, selected topics of current interest in this field were chosen. This book contains the collected papers from most of the symposium participants. The subject matter covered in this book is divided into four parts. These are: 1) the iron-sulfur proteins (which are not a part of the mitochondrial electron transport system); 2) the iron-sulfur proteins and heme proteins of the mitochondrial electron transport system; 3) other heme and nonheme iron proteins; and 5) selected copper proteins. The organizers of the symposium wish to express their gratitude to the participants, the session chairmen, and Drs. I.C. Gunsalus and E. Frieden who assisted in the organization of the symposium.

Download or read book Sulfur in Proteins written by Reinhold Benesch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur in Proteins is a collection of papers presented at the 1958 Symposium on Sulfur in Proteins, held in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The symposium primary aims to explore the varied and unusual roles of –S–S– and –SH groups in proteins. This book is organized into eight chapters that cover a wide variety of proteins, including serum, iron, copper, and muscle proteins, as well as enzymes and viruses. The opening chapter describes the various protein reactions involving sulfur, emphasizing the chemical modification of thiol and disulfide groups. Considerable chapters are devoted to the chemical properties, biogenesis, reactivity, and oxygenation of specific proteins. A chapter highlights some aspects of protein structure in relation to the role of –S–S– and –SH groups in enzymic catalysis. This chapter also describes the properties of sulfhydryl groups in yeast alcohol dehydrogenase. The final chapters examine the role of sulfur groups in several virus proteins and in cell division. This work will be of great value to protein scientists and researchers.

Book Biological Properties

  • Author : Walter Lovenberg
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 032315204X
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Biological Properties written by Walter Lovenberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Properties is a collection of papers that deals with the biological properties of iron-sulfur proteins. One paper reviews the role of electron paramagnetic resonance in forwarding knowledge about iron-sulfur proteins. Iron-sulfur proteins are iron proteins where sulfur is a ligand of the iron, of which the iron is not simultaneously held by a stronger ligand such as porphyrin. Another paper discusses the role of bacterial ferredoxins in coupled oxidation-reduction reactions, the role of hydrogenase in oxidation-reduction, as well as the bacterial iron-sulfur proteins, such as azoferredoxin and molybdoferredoxin. Abiological models of nitrogenase involve molybdenum and iron with sulfur ligands; these abiological systems can be the first models that show the biological activity of iron-sulfur enzymes which these systems try to copy. One paper investigates the role of iron-sulfur proteins in photosynthesis, particularly the photoreduction of ferrodoxin, the mechanism of NADPH formation, and the possible role of ferrodoxin in cyclic photophosphorylation. This collection is suitable for bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, and scientists involved in research in the biological disciplines.
