Book excerpt: In this book, the authors first introduce two fish-like underwater robots, including a multiple fins-actuated robotic fish and a caudal fin-actuated robotic fish with a barycenter regulating mechanism. They study how a robotic fish uses its onboard pressure sensor arrays based-ALLS to estimate its trajectory in multiple locomotions, including rectilinear motion, turning motion, ascending motion, and spiral motion. In addition, they also explore the ALLS-based relative position and attitude perception between two robotic fish in a leader-follower formation. Four regression methods—multiple linear regression methods, support vector regressions, back propagation neural networks, and random forest methods—are used to evaluate the relative positions or attitudes using the ALLS data. The research on ALLS-based local sensing between two adjacent fish robots extends current research from one individual underwater robot to two robots in formation, and will attract increasing attention from scholars of robotics, underwater technology, biomechanics and systems, and control engineering.

Book excerpt: In order to perform underwater surveillance, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) require flexible, light-weight, reliable and robust sensing systems that are capable of flow sensing and detecting underwater objects. Underwater animals like fish perform a similar task using an efficient and ubiquitous sensory system called a lateral-line constituting of an array of pressure-gradient sensors. We demonstrate here the development of arrays of polymer microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) pressure sensors which are flexible and can be readily mounted on curved surfaces of AUV bodies. An array of ten sensors with a footprint of 60 (L) mm x 25 (W) mm x 0.4 (H) mm is fabricated using liquid crystal polymer (LCP) as the sensing membrane material. The flow sensing and object detection capabilities of the array are illustrated with proof-of-concept experiments conducted in a water tunneL The sensors demonstrate a pressure sensitivity of 14.3 1-L V Pa-1. A high resolution of 25 mm s-1 is achieved in water flow sensing. The sensors can passively sense underwater objects by transducing the pressure variations generated underwater by the movement of objects. The experimental results demonstrate the array's ability to detect the velocity of underwater objects towed past by with high accuracy, and an average error of only 2.5%.

This style of swimming depends on the pectoral fins only as a main locomotor for movement. A unique model with fins having a concave shape allows the highest thrust force to be achieved during the power period and the lowest drag force during the recovery period, especially if the velocity values between the powering and recovery periods are manipulated.Besides the ability to swim quickly, the proposed model was also inspired by a method of maneuvering based on the principle of differential drive for two-wheel mobile robot, achieving the minimum turning radius by controlling the speed of the rowing fins.Also, by applying the technique of the diving model used by gliders, the robot achieves underwater gliding by changing the center of the body's mass. Thus, the robot obtains the ability to dive and float in a manner similar to the Sawtooth wave.All the mentioned tasks were conducted via laboratory experiments and proven to be both effective and efficient.

Book excerpt: While the vast majority of underwater vehicles rely exclusively on sonar and vision to detect obstacles and maneuver, live fish also use their lateral line organ. The role played by the canal lateral line system is particularly important for hypogean fish, such as blind Mexican cave fish, who use it to avoid obstacles and navigate dexterously in complex environments. Similarly, pressure sensors could be used on underwater vehicles to expand their range of operability by filling the gap left by sonar and vision systems in turbid cluttered environments. To understand how much information can be extracted from the artificial lateral line of an underwater vehicle exploring an unknown environment, the case of a foil passing a static object in still water is analyzed. A two-dimensional potential flow approach based on a source panels method is used to characterize the spatio-temporal pressure signature of the object as sensed by the vehicle. Simulations are used to estimate the sensing range of an artificial lateral line and the appropriate density of pressure sensors. To emulate the object-detection and shape-recognition capabilities of the lateral line, an adapted unscented Kalman filter is combined with the hydrodynamic model. The method developed is experimentally tested in a water tank, using a hydrofoil instrumented with pressure sensors passing a static cylinder. The results show that location and shape informations of an elliptical cylinder can be successfully inferred from experimental pressure measurements. Performance of the proposed method for object identification using pressure sensors are discussed and ways to improve it are suggested.

The goal of this confer ence was to bring together researchers from all over the world to share informa tion about a major aquatic sensory system, the evolution and function of which have largely remained an enigma since the 18th century. The "lateral line" or "lateralis" system has been used as an umbrella term to describe what originally (without the aid of modern anatomical techniques) looked like a series of pits, grooves, and lines on the head and trunk of fishes and some amphibians. For at least the past 30 years, however, it has been recognized that the lateralis system comprises not one, but at least two functional classes of receptors: mechanoreceptors and electroreceptors. The relative ease with which the appropriate stimulus could be defined and measured for the electroreceptive class has resulted in an explosion of information on this submodality during the past 20 years. As a result, there is little ambiguity about the overall function of the electrosensory system, now generally regarded as an independent system in its own right. A similarly clear definition for the function of the mechanosensory lateralis system has not been as forthcoming.
